File attachments and my files question

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Users can attach files to pages and the like and there is the IMCE/personal files in the my account area. However, the placing of this seems off or limited as my account means much less then my work or even my files. At least for the needs of my users it would be much more useful if there was a central file repository in the my work area. My users are more interested in file sharing and collaboration along these lines. They understand concrete tasks like uploading a powerpoint presentation or a pdf but to ask them to post this to a page within a blog post or the like will throw them off. They are not that computer savvy so choices like My Posts, My Comments etc will not be immediately clear to them. I am afraid that without one truly familiar concept right off the bat they will stop using the system. I see that there are various File Management module but so far none seem to work so well. Are there any suggestions anyone has out there?

Depends on how robust a DMS you want

If you are looking for full-on Document Management, then you would probable be better off looking into OWL, Fedora, or DSpace.

If, however, you wanted a centrally accessible place where people could share and access files, you could create a content type called "Shared Resource" -- Then, you could present these posts to your users via a new view.

Often, the semantics of the name of the content type determines how people use the content type.

Cheers,

Bill
