a wmass drupalcamp sounds

a wmass drupalcamp sounds pretty cool. I'd be up for presenting on somethin... and i'm pretty sure i'll figure out somethin to blab about at the meetup too

Yeah, count me in (at least

Yeah, count me in (at least for now).

Is anyone into mixing up the format a bit? Here's a few ideas to keep energy up and have time for informal discussion (esp for us dads in the group).

Intros and then:

A). One long (well put together) presentation, some Q+A and be at the bar by 7:30
B). 7-8 lightning talks (7 minutes people, with a timer that makes a buzz!). Then be at the bar by 7:30
C). Breakout trainings, 3-4 people getting taught something by someone. Hands on with your own IDEs, etc. Then be at the bar by 7:30.

Thoughts?

This sounds excellent!

def think lightning talks are the way to go with meetups. in boston they say 5-7 mins, some end up going maybe 10, with exceptions for stuff that is really engaging to everyone. moshe is really good at politely telling you youre time is up ;)

I also vote for lightning

I also vote for lightning talks.

And I can volunteer to do one on how we used Ubercart, Panels and no node access modules as the basis for a paywalled premium content site.

Yes to Drupal Camp

I'm all for it and will help get it organized. One topic at the next meet up should be getting a group together to move forward.

Cool, so we've got rough consensus for lightning talks

JacobSingh's picture

I think I created confusion. I was actually suggesting one of those three approaches. :) Basically, I want to find something which gives an interactive fast pace and allows us to get out earlier than last time. I really would like to have more casual bar time to be honest, I learn best under the influence of alcohol. :) Plus, I've got a little one, so need to be home fairly early. I'd like to do all three at some point, but it sounds like we've got a few yays and no nays so I'll venture we go with lightning talks.

For those who haven't done this, a Lightning talk is just a really short presentation. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning_Talk).

The format I've used is 7min each, a warning at 5 min. Try to avoid Q+A until after all the talks are done (otherwise a conversation will push other speakers off the end of the schedule).

Generally, I find that switching computers doesn't work well for lightning talks, so if people want to share slides, it's probably best to send them in to someone ahead of time who can compile them together. I'm happy to do this if people want to.

Does this format sounds good:
Introductions: 15m
Lightning talks: 7m per person + 3min buffer * 6 = 1hr.
Q+A on talks (for people not going out): 20m

So given that schedule + a little whatever time, we'd finish up around 8:00. Does that work for others? Kelly?

Oh, and Acquia just agreed to sponsor this one; I've got some money for pizzas and drinks, so please RSVP.

Best,
Jacob

Sounds great. We need a couple more lightning talkers!

Anything anyone would like to hear a talk on?

Yin/Yang Staging

limako's picture

I'd be willing to give a brief overview of the yin/yang staging system we've created for supporting a complex multi-site drupal install. This allows us to (1) have a sandbox for testing and (2) to perform major updates while the production site is live and then switch to the updated site, while preserving the old production site until everyone is sure that the updated site is working correctly.

synchlayer's picture

This all looks dandy, and doing more in less time to allow libations is always a winner.

If it's not what @limako covers then I'd be interested in hearing the backup options that @dhakimzadeh & @jacobsingh mentioned last time at the Nov meetup as this one looks full already.

Facebook features in Drupal sites

Rick Hood's picture

I would like to learn about how best to do Facebook-type features on a Drupal site, such as a "wall" and friending people. I can give a lighting talk on a site I am working on now that needs those features - - how I am doing those things so far and get feedback from you all.

Cool, I'll do one on

JacobSingh's picture

Cool, I'll do one on drupalgardens.

I was going to suggest

I was going to suggest drupalgardens.

Anyone want to do one on

Last Call Media's picture

Anyone want to do one on using the GA API, not the basic GA module, as in getting statistics back from google and displaying them in Drupal?

yurtboy's picture

interface I really like. Being a phpmyadmin user it was tough to think this mac application would be worth it. But it really is a great free program. Sequal Pro http://www.sequelpro.com/ so I would like to just show some of its features and compare it to phpmyadmin etc.
This is for those of us not doing command link mysql. ( -:

Looks like I'll be missing this, everyone at work is either ill or on holiday. But heck If you're still at the ABC at 930 I may see you there.

Okay, so no one got back to

JacobSingh's picture

Okay, so no one got back to me on slides for lightning talks, so I'm assuming no one has any.

If you do, please send 'em ASAP.

My slides are on google docs

krlucas's picture

I am throwing together some slides on Google Docs just for people to look at while I blab:
https://docs.google.com/present/view?id=0AQgWh8yDq4YaZGd6ejd2NzNfMzdjcjR...

I'm assuming we will have internet because the other part I will be demoing on a demo site.

I just want to thank Al for

Rick Hood's picture

I just want to thank Al for suggesting using Panels for that Facebook-type site I was working on. I had never used Panels before, as I always thought it was overkill for what I needed to do and was scared off by past no-upgrade-path stories. But it was a dream to create the user's home page putting whatever I wanted (like the comment form) in panels panes. I may show it when its done at the next meetup. Only downside is I do get memory exhausted message whenever I save the modules page:

"Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 659553 bytes) in /home/environm/public_html/includes/database.mysqli.inc on line 303"

So I assume Panels uses a lot of memory?

Just noticed the comment

yurtboy's picture

did you figure it out? Not sure why it would exhaust it. Did you happen to have a large query that was set to "Default to all values if nothing found" in Views?
Glad you like it though. Maybe you can push you php memory limit in the .htaccass file with a line like
php_value memory_limit 256M
Right under the area where it mentions
