Social Networking Sites

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

This is the group for people who want to discuss Drupal's social networking tools. These tools include modules like Buddylist, Organic Groups, Invite, FOAF, Private message, and so forth. Sites that currently do successful social networking are:

The goal of this group is to foster communication between the developers of Drupal's social networking modules, discuss roadmaps, and collect community input.

Groups vs. Multiple Drupal installations

Hello there!
If you want to give a user total control over a site (his/her site, area, or whatever you want to call it), what should be better? Creating a group for each user, as in drupal Groups, or creating a multisite installation?

When I say "total control" I mean everything: Blogs, polls, newsletters, have a fan´s group (not buudies, I mean actual users that are created just to enter his/her personal site).

Would multiple sites installations become a huge monster, that no server could manage?

What are your thoughts?

New Module idea -- Twitter style follow/following

Purpose of module:

This module will implement Twitter-style following functionality for Drupal community websites. On Twitter you follow people you find interesting and people who find interesting follow you. People you are following show up on your home page in a river-of-news format. My proposed module would do the same thing for a Drupal community site. You follow people who's post you find interesting and are followed by people who find you interesting.

I wrote a bit here about how the twitter model is useful.

Advice needed for Finance/Stock related Drupal Social networking website

Hello Friends,

I am working on a new Finance/Stock related social networking website based on Drupal where I will be showing Company details of all companies being traded on NASDAQ and other exchanges.

I need to have a functionality for users to ask questions/offer advice on a particular stock and show all messages related to one stock in a list (kind of forum)

As their are lots of companies on each exchange and the number is not fixed and there will be new companies everymonth, I need advice on how to achieve this functionality.

Very restricted "social networking" site, need some advice

Hi all, my first instinct was to put this in an Organic Group group, but there isnt one! So this is my second best place to ask for some advice. I will just explain what the site should be able to do, then i hope someone could give me some pointers whether it can be done with existing modules, or if i should start building my own. These are the features i am looking for:

  1. A member of my site should be able to keep his own agenda.
  2. A member should be able to give another user permission to add events to his agenda, ideally on a 'per-day-basis'

Niche/Themed Site

My daughter has asked me to create a niche social site themed around her favorite anime character...

I am planning on building the site on Drupal and I already know most of the modules I want to use.

However, I am not sure if there is a module available for allowing the end-user to create customized graphics, backgrounds, or colors on their start page (short of allowing them to change their personal theme for the entire site).

Any help would be appreciated.

Building a New Social Network - Any advice for first-time configuration?

I am looking into using Drupal for a new social network aimed at professional and collegiate athletes (NBA, NFL, NCAA, etc.) which will allow them to connect with their fanbase which will also have access to the site membership. The requirements (whick my first platform choice, Elgg, did not adequately meet -- which, in turn, led me to Drupal by recommendation) are to have several different user types related to the industry including fans, teams, universities and career managers (or athlete agents, if you will).

Omni-lingual social networking site

Hi all,

I'm totally new to Drupal so I'm still exploring the various modules to see what's available that'll suit my needs.

I need to quickly set up a social network to connect a bunch of people all around the globe. Basically, I need a mix of Ning and Facebook, with the ability to sort people by the info they've entered (location, industry, etc). The reason those two systems won't work is that I don't want there to be a default language...so I have another idea.

Cultural and leisure events in Seville - www.youthing.org

Hi.

I'd like to present a local events guide done with Drupal.

At this moment it has 4 main pages , in order to make it VERY simple for the visitors: 1.- (what's on) today, 2.- tomorrow and 3.- after tomorrow and 4.- a 4th page for exhibitions (because they usually last a longer period). Home page is a selection of the events for today and the following 2 days.

Each event is a node, and so is each venue . That's the deepest you can browse in the site. Events to happen over a 3 days time don't show as a link and are locked by a simple PHP query within the node template. You can check 'this feature' by clicking here if browsing before June'2008.

Drupal loves OpenSocial?

Hello there,

I'm a student Communication Multimedia Design - currently doing a graduation investigation and project about the "Integration of social networking sites in Drupal".

Investigation

My investigation brings me first to a technical question: which current (Drupal 5) modules give an answer to this question?

I did an investigation and found 19 contributed modules that make integration possible for content coming from a typical social networking site into Drupal.

  • Activity Stream
  • Advogato
  • Delicious
  • Digg this
  • Embedded Media Field

Modules for Social Networks

Hi!
I'm going to create a Social Network based on Drupal. It's my first time that I use Drupal and I'm impressed with the high quantity of modules. There are a lot of modules for each subject (i.e. image gallery, blog, etc). Now I've got a problem because I don't know which are the most useful modules to build a Social Network.

Could you tell me which are the indispensable modules to create a Social Network with Drupal? or which is the best module in a concrete subject?

Thanks in advance.

Buddies vs. Contacts

I've activated the buddylist module on my site, and have been racking my brain since whether or not to go with an invite/accept scheme or to allow anyone to add members to their buddy lists as they see fit. My feeling is that, by reaching that decision, I am deciding between two different features which shouldn't be mutally exclusive:

Distributed social networking with wordpress

http://gigaom.com/2007/12/11/the-next-social-network-wordpress/

I really like the idea of a person owning their own content and then remotely integrating into a social network. Let's keep an eye on what Chris, Will, and Steve are up to.

What would you put in a distributed social network distribution with Drupal?

Alternative Currency Support

Moved to official ideas list

The 'mint of the realm' is not the only store of wealth or medium of exchange. Community currencies facilitate trading all over the world.
Such currencies

  • are resilient against recesssion and collapse
  • do not favour the rich by charging interest
  • belong to communities, not to banks
  • prefer local goods and services over the globalised economy
  • are used for economic regeneration and international development

Memetracker module proposal

Summary:
I want to write two modules for Drupal as part of Google Summer of Code. One called meme_tracker and the other called machine_learning_api. The meme_tracker module will use the machine_learning_api to intelligently filter and group content from both internal and external content sources. The module's purpose is to find and display to a community in real time the most interesting conversations and memes within the community as they emerge.

Hello Drupliers. My name is Kyle Mathews. I'm a grad student in Information Systems at Brigham Young University working as a research assistant to several faculty members here. We are studying how and where social software can be used in education.

In the past eight months, I've built a number of classroom websites using Drupal. I've learned a considerable bit about Drupal in the process, became very involved in the community, and am writing a module (writing_assignment -- still a work in progress btw). I've loved most everything about Drupal but have found Drupal is missing an important component for building the perfect social learning website. This itches. So, in the best open-source fashion, I'm applying to Google Summer of Code to scratch my itch.
