Event summary and feedback: Drupal Johannesburg Meetup, February 2008
Thanks to everyone who attended the Drupal Johannesburg meetup (18 strong!). In particular, thanks to Anton for hosting us at Obsidian, Willem and Laurence from e-Consultant for providing the cooler box full of drinks, and to everyone for being passionate enough about drupal to make the event the success that it was. Special thanks to the canadian high commission who made it possible for Adrian Rossouw to attend.

I'm looking at having the a Drupal Cape Town meetup sometime in March.
The first question is of course if there are Drupal enthusiasts in Cape Town who would like to meetup once in a while. I assume there is a need for it, so I would propose to meet on a Saturday, both 2nd and 9th of March is possible for me.
Please post preferred days, dates and possible venue's. It would be great if you can offer your own office or meeting space:-)
A few ideas for this meetup that I got from the Jo'burg meetup agenda:

Drupal Johannesburg Feb 08 Meetup
UPDATE: I'm not sure what's going on with the attending/not attending functionality for this event, but for those on facebook, check out the event there to see who's going to be attending.
Join fellow Drupalers at the first Drupal Johannesburg meetup, an opportunity for anyone with an interest in Drupal to find out more about Drupal (locally and globally), make connections, ask questions, share Drupal experiences and work, and help promote Drupal in Johannesburg.

We're looking at having the first Drupal Johannesburg meetup sometime in February.
We need to decide on a date for the February meetup. As it stands, the meetup will be held at the Obsidian training centre (or bar area) in Randpark Ridge (courtesy of Anton de Wet), but we need everyone's input as to the date and time. I personally feel that a Saturday would be good, so that we can all avoid traffic and have a more relaxed meetup.

Hello All,
PLEASE TAKE A MINUTE OR TWO TO READ THIS
I am a high school student in America participating in the Google Highly Open Participation Contest 2007 (http://code.google.com/opensource/ghop/2007-8/) and am working on a task for Drupal. The task is to research how Drupal is used in Africa to demonstrate that Drupal is used worldwide.
I am posting this to you either because you are an Africa group, have an African Drupal site, or have been using Drupal for a while and are knowledgeable (or all three)

Hello there Everyone!
I've been at Drupal for about a month now and have experience in PHP, but getting pretty stuck now and then and looking for someone that I can pay by hour just to get me over the big hurdles.
I'm transferring my site http://www.filmmaker.co.za (9000+ subscribers) to a Drupal site at http://www.filmmaker.co.za/planet and would really like someone that has a understanding of Drupal core and good at css (nothing major).

Hi All,
I am rather new to Drupal and have managed to build 2 websites using it. I achieved this by playing around with Drupal itself.
However I do admit that my knowledge is rather basic and in my quest to build more powerful and functional websites I would like to know if there is some sort of training or a Drupal 'Mentor' out there where one could ask questions, get guidance and training.
Thanks
Rob
DrupalCamp Johannesburg announcement and some Drupal meetups.
Hello guys.
I am going to be spending more time actively promoting Drupal in South Africa again, and to that end I am going to be organizing a DrupalCamp in johannesburg , mid july 2007.
This course is going to be significantly different from the previous course, due to the wealth of training materials having been produced since the previous course took place.
I would also like to organize 2 drupal meet ups. One in cape town, say around the 7th of June. And one in johannesburg on around the 7th of july.

Hi all.
I've gone bossies: I'm relatively new to Linux - (K)ubuntu; almost new to XAMPP and all the PHP, MySQL etc. that goes with it; completely new to Drupal and brand-spanking new to this site. I've been having a blast :-)
So, of the 45 subscribers here, 80% are Gauteng - cool. But of the 45 subscribers, how many are "active" or "regulars" ???

Where in SA are you from?
Course outline, preparations and times.
Hello DrupalCampers.
Some things you need to know for the Drupal training next week.
Firstly, there are still a number of seats available for the course, if anyone is interested in joining us , please
contact me at adrian at bryght dot com.
What do I need to bring :
hardware
Your laptop, if you own one. If you do not own a laptop, a computer
will be made available to you, but we only have machines running linux
available.
software
Your favourite web browser. Preferably firefox. Internet Explorer is also suitable, but will likely get you ridiculed. (it's just the truth =) )
Still 3 places open for DrupalCamp Johannesburg
Just a reminder that we still have some spaces open for the DrupalCamp being run from 24 July to 28 July (during the evenings).
There is a cost of R2500 for the 5 evening course, which includes meals and training materials.
Shall we do a meetup ?
Sorry. I've had a bit of an extended offline 'vacation' due to our favourite pet hate (telkom).
I know some of you have been trying to contact me, and I am slowly getting back on the ball.
Would anyone be keen to do a meetup sometime this week, or weekend? Unfortunately I am off to johannesburg (and then germany, and then johannesburg again) as of the 2nd of july, so I will only be back in town again august at the earliest.
Regardless, all of you (in cape town) should be coming to the barcamp wrap up on thursday night =)
Read moreDrupal Developers' availability in SA
Hey guys,
This is for myself, or at least the company that employs me, but I thought it would be good information for anyone that does pop past the Drupal group here:
Do we have some freelance and permanent Drupal experiences (at any level) developers in South Africa? How's the availability of them in terms of time and employment ratio? What salary or hourly rates apply.
Gotta tell you, I have done some freelance work, but I have no idea what the market looks like or what one should offer as a salary for such a developer. We'll need to employ someone like this in the near future (likely end August) and I need to put it in the budget now.

Some may have noticed that drupal.co.za was offline for a while. This was due to a LARGE bunch of factors which I described in more detail on the site.
After a lot of help from Chris and Gordon, who finally isolated the problem, we are back online now, and everything seems fine, although I would appreciate it if you provide any feedback if you encounter more problems.
The upgrade to 4.7.1 will take place shortly, though, and minor downtime may be experienced again.
Read morePricing information set for DrupalCamp Johannesburg
The price for DrupalCamp has been set at R2500 for the 5 evening course. That includes training materials and supper.
This is equal to about $420, which is not a lot considering that some of the other DrupalCamps are charging $900 per person for a single day. There are only 10 positions available per course, so please sign up if you intend on joining us.
Read moreThe new DarkLight Nocturnal Entertainment on Drupal
Hello everyone,
DarkLight is roughly a decade old, and mostly a Dark-Alternative online community site in South Africa. For a very long time it was phpBB (forums) based and later added the excellent CH mod by Ptirhiik for Modified Preordered Tree Traversed hierarchical forums so that we could diversify the forums a little. Some additional mods by me included the country flags mod that I later tied in to a more locationally aware system for events listings in members' areas of residence, the gallery system that was very specific in it's requirements to DarkLight and the MusicBase feeding of Audioscrobbler, MusicBrainz and Amazon and integrated with the forums system right through to profiles and posts with various music charts.
