The Risks of the Current Strategy

Exactly 2 weeks ago, the Drupal Association canceled DrupalCon Sao Paulo. I believe that this provides us with a unique opportunity to reflect about how DrupalCons are organized and how we can make them better in the future.

A Brief History

As you may or may not be aware, the DA recently approved the charter to create a Branding and Marketing Committee for Drupal. They are now looking for a permanent chair to lead the effort.

Ok, so I just discovered that becoming a Drupal Association Member is only $30 per year! I personally feel that this is more than worth it for the slick little badge you get and what better way to support the community we all love. I guess I'm posting this for anyone that didn't know how in-expensive it is and also to bring up another topic...

Are there people out there that will sponsor developers we all know and love to get their memberships? If not, I think this would be a great way to show some of our devs how much we appreciate them AND give back to drupal at the same time!

Next week the Drupal Association will have two new board members voted in by the community - that's YOU.

Voting eligibility

Question: Who gets to vote [DA Members? Drupal.org users? Some other parameters?]

Answer: Basically, narrowed it down to two choices for this year's election, and these are generally for practical reasons:

In a former life I was a board member of the Erasmus Student Network, this network like several other student networks (AIESEC, ELSA, etc.) had a hub and spokes model: 1 international association and a long list of local groups.

After going to DC Chicago I was inspired to join the Drupal Association, but could not be moved to include its ugly seal on my site.

Come on designers. You know what I mean. We can do better than this.

Just before the final decisive meeting about the formation of a Belgian Drupal Association we received the news that the other Drupal Association (DA, also a Belgian entity) offers its financial infrastructure to us for organizing events. This means a bank account, credit card and on line payment processing. In exchange the local community pays the accounting costs it causes.

Jacob Redding of the DA, who participated in the meeting via Skype, gave a detailed explanation about the functioning of this construction and its many advantages.
