Legal

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
This group should probably have more organizers. See documentation on this recommendation.

This is a working group for legal issues relating to Drupal. That includes licensing questions and planning. It should not be used as a legal advice forum; for that, consult a lawyer. If you actually have information from a lawyer about an issue that would be relevant to Drupal, however, that would be welcome.

Please be sure to read the FAQ before posting!

Affiliate link in a module / Benefit from integration with a commercial web service

Hello,

I have developed a module that interfaces with the API of a commercial web service.

Am I allowed to put an affiliate link in my module, that people could follow and hopefully subscribe to the paid service, if they are not clients yet ?

Is there any other way to benefit from a Drupal integration with a commercial web service ?

Thank you,
Guillaume

Drupal Software

Hello!

I'm sorry for my english, it's not my native language :).

I have a couple of questions regarding the Drupal's license:
- I'm building a website where users pay for it's usage. Do I have to share the code with them?
- In certain circumstances, when there is no internet connection for example, there will be a server installed on a machine in the internal network of a certain office that needs to use the site. Will I need to share the code with them?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards

Including MIT Licensed SASS/Compass Gems in Drupal GPL Licensed Themes/Modules

As more and more themes(and to a lesser extent modules) begin to incorporate MIT licensed CSS resets and Mixins libraries. Although the majority of the libraries (Gems) vest on the dev-box, there is a need to include large portions of them in themes in many cases.

Can we use drupal logo on my company website banner

Hi Drupal Family,

I want to know about using the drupal logo on my website front page banner to represent my company as a drupal development company.

I have written "We are drupalian and develop in drupal". Also added some other opensource CMS. Is there any trouble to use this kind of banner.

If it's not allowed, then let me know how to do so. I need to show drupal as my favorite tool in web development.

Many thanks!

Will Drupal 8 allow non-GPL licensed code?

Hi.
Since Drupal 8 was completely rewritten into OOP and therefore is quite "pluggable", will it be possible to have an installation profile/module that could be commercially licensed? I'm not talking about having a Drupal + the commercially licensed code sold together as one package of course.

Premium Drupal theme licensing

Hello all,

I'd like to ask about licensing for our premium themes.

Our premium themes are not commit on Drupal.org Git Repositories. So are we allowed to restrict users to purchase single theme license for one domain (sub-domains included), if they want to use the same theme for another domain, they have to purchase another same license?
And also, can we provide multi-domain license add-on that can save users money if they need to use one of our themes on different domains (In case we are allowed to restrict them from purchasing one theme license but use it on different domains)?

SaaS Drupal on Amazon, is this considered a 'distribtion'?

I am building a Drupal application to be sold 'as a Service' to customers. From what I read on the web in general, and more specifically on this site, is that I can sell the software as a service and I don't have to give them the code as long as I don't distribute the code to anyone. So it is my understanding that I could maintain a single (or multiple) instance(s) of my application, which is hosted at Amazon, sell the application 'as a service' to my customers, and never have to give them any code as long as I am the owner of the amazon account(s)?

Distribute Drupal module with MIT+GPL license?

Please forgive me my ignorance, but this licensing stuff is quite difficult :). I have two simple questions:

  1. Is it allowed to distribute a Drupal module having a dual MIT+GPL license?
  2. Is this module allowed to be put on Drupal.org as an official Drupal module?

So basically my problem is understanding the relationship between MIT and GPL. They are compatible, but what does that exactly mean? (p.s. I read sites like http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3336161/mit-gpl-dual-license-in-comme...)

Use of visuals for Drupal events (Branding)

Hi guys,

We've been working on the organization of Drupal Global Training Days in our local community and I was wondering if we could potentially use the official logo for the event's promotion, post on groups and communication around the event.

How work's Drupal developments using SQLSrv driver?

I have some questions about this scenario:

1 - If I distribute a development in drupal using MSSQL as Database Server (http://drupal.org/projects/sqlsrv) that is not under GPL licence, the functions and/or procedures stored in that database can be encrypted? Notice that in this case I didn't encrypt the drupal code.
2 - If I use Drupal to interact with data generated and managed from a propietary software (which can't be redistributed), can I via contract or other negate the possibility of a redistribution.

Someone post my code as if was theirs what could I do?

I understand that we create modules to share, I love the idea. So since I'm a college student that lacks experience for most of the jobs posted now, I did some volunteer work in a non-profit organization.

I suggested a certain improvement and explained to my manager that I would be more than happy to create the module but that would love to post it on drupal.org in my name so I could have a proof of my skills. She did agree with me, all the content we develop since is a non-profit organization was intended to be share.

Will Drupal's open source license protect against patent lawsuits?

Reading the news lately, there is a lot of legal battle over tech patents. For example, Apple and Samsung are fighting over patents to the point of stifling further innovation. In addition, so called "patent trolls" -firms who buy patents in order to make a profit from legal settlements in court- make matters worse.

How does Drupal's open source license protect against such lawsuits?

Any concerns about jQuery switching to only the MIT license?

We're looking to simplify the licensing of all jQuery projects and want to remove the dual licensing of MIT/GPLv2 and switch to just the MIT license (specifically the Expat license). Since MIT is compatible with GPL, it should not affect the inclusion in Drupal. However, it is my understanding that the main reason jQuery is dual licensed today is because of a request from Drupal. Ben Alman has had a similar experience, which is documented on his blog: http://benalman.com/news/2010/02/on-licensing-my-code/

Commercial Drupal Themes

Hi, I want to use Drupal as a core cms for creating websites for my clients. So I make unique design soliutions, because everybody wants to be different. I know I can sell websites with unique design on top of the drupal cms. But the question is, if I don't want or my client don't want to share code of that unique website, can we don't share it with no one else? Another question is, if themeforest.net is selling drupal themes just for one person only and that person can't distribute that theme with no one else, what kind of license do they use? Because I don't get.. Thanks for answers :)
