I'm sure it's some newbie mistake, but students in groups who write blog entries are also creating groups with that blog entry. So their post is listed in the groups directory.
What am I doing wrong?

It's a problem, I'm betting, with your Organic groups Configuration.
Go to Admin>Organic Groups>Organic Groups Configuration.
There are two different admin areas that are easy to confuse. Node Authoring Form and Group Home Page.
Node Authoring Form -- this is where you indicate which content types can be (or should be) associated with a given group. So, if you're making a group for a class, this is where you would select the content types that belong INSIDE the class -- assignments, announcements, whatever.
Group Home Page -- this is where you indicate what content types are groups in themselves. So, if you're making a class, this is where you would indicate the Class content type itself.
My guess, then, is that you have "blog" selected in your "group home page" section.

Thanks, jp.
So I eliminated blog in the group home page section and left only "group" selected. Is that correct?
That should do it, so long
That should do it, so long as "group" is the only content type that you're building groups out of. (In many of my school sites I create a handful of different content types for groups -- classes, sports, activities, committees, etc. )

It worked!
It takes some time to get my head around some of these drupal concepts. I don't yet "think drupal"!
Thanks.
