Fellow Drupalistas,
Over the last few months, over 40 people have approached me asking for assistance in installing Drupal.
I felt that an installfest would be a great way to help them get started, as well as introduce them to the local Drupal community.
Lauren Roth suggested that we actually hold several install fests -- one a month or so until the majority of the people interested can get up and running.
We have spoken with Joey and Dustin about using the ACTLAB on Wednesday July 8th, but we don't have a confirmation yet.
Since I agree with Lauren that having multiple install fests is a good idea, I'm looking for additional locations that would have both work tables and a decent internet connection. If any of you have recommendations, please let me know.
I'm also looking for people who would be interested in assisting at the installfest as mentors. I pretty much always install Drupal on a local host, and have a favorite virtual host configuration for Debian. So I can help people with that. However, quite a few of the folks will be installing on macbooks, or over the network using cpanel and other utilities. I'm afraid I have little to no experience with those environments. I'd love to hear from anyone in the local Drupal community who help welcome these new folks by assisting them with an install.

CPanel / Plesk
I'd be more than happy to assist those doing a server-type install.
Please define a bit further what you mean by install though - are you refering to just getting Drupal installed beyond the database definition step to the point that you can begin installing modules and themes - or are you meaning to take them a bit deeper into the process of building a drupal site?
Thanks,
Terry
Terry, are you refering to
Terry,
Yes would be simply an install fest. I think that many folks, once they get to the drupal admin window, will be able to make their way. It's all the steps that lead up to that (getting MySQL, PHP, Apache all talking to each other, setting up file system permissions, etc) that get them hung up.
Your assistance would be greatly appreciated!
We don't yet have the ACTLAB confirmed for Wednesday. So this week might not work. I am currently looking for a more permanent solution. Thanks to some recent sponsorship offers for GeekAustin, I have ordered a projector and screen for Union Park. However, it will be a few more weeks until that is set up. However, I'll have that space guaranteed for every Wednesday night.
I'm still looking for folks who can help with mac laptop installs.

Installation profiles
Might be a nice idea to go over installation profiles - especially for those doing a lot of installs (Green Spider).

Install profiles
Quite a few good points I agree with in terms of how install profiles should operate.
