I am the web developer for a graduate program at St. Mary's University of MN. We are currenly using Drupal for our program. It replaced two sites, one was written in perl and the other used moodle. Our new Drupal site was developed to be hub for collaborative learning. I am looking at ways to expand the use of Drupal for the entire university. I am looking for ideas and avenues to explore for using Drupal for the website for an entire university. I would also appreciate some thoughts on Drupal 6 vs Drupal 7 vs Drupal 8 for use in developing a website for a university.

D7 for now
D7 is definitely the best choice for use right now.
When you say, "hub for collaborative learning" what exactly do you mean? What types of interaction are you looking to support?

Our program is for teachers
Our program is for teachers who what to get a Masters Degree in Education. I used Drupal 6 to develop a site where learning communities of teachers could collaborate in their learning experience. There are forums, and blogs where they can share their classroom experiences. Facilitators can create assignments and learners can upload their course work. I used OG to make each community private, but also to allow learners to create their own work groups for collaboration. I don't foresee making a full LMS, but I am interested in using Drupal 7 to make a website for community based learning.
