What is "It"?
This notice is not real meaningful without knowing what "it" is. Is this Bryan's education project presentation?
OK. I see it now. When I first followed the link, the rest of the discussion was not there. I guess it takes awhile for Drupal to send all the content. Hmmmm.
Bob McFarland and I plan to come to your afternoon presentation.
Afternoon vs. evening
Just to clear up, the afternoon meeting is for Higher Ed professionals to meet and discuss ways to leverage Drupal for education or PR within a University setting. It's not really going to be a 'presentation', per se, it's an on-clock meeting for folks in the field who already use Drupal to discuss its application within our particular field. We're going to need to stay very closely on-topic for this one.
Btopro will be presenting his e-learning suite at the regular evening meetup. If you're just interested in learning about his project and more general applications of Drupal, or in having a Q & A on how to achieve certain tasks within Drupal, the evening meetup is the place to be.
That said, we welcome users and professionals who work in higher ed throughout the region to participate in our afternoon discussion. And we welcome EVERYONE to participate in our meetup, eat some pizza, and talk Drupally things.
The normal meet up is still
The normal meet up is still happening later at night for those that can't make this. I will say that my coming to Pitt is to talk Drupal for Universities and how we're using it at Penn State. I'll run through some of the modules we use, our design philosophy, and show off a bunch of our courses as they are our primary site I build. If you don't know what ELMS is (e-Learning Management System) this is a good place to find out what the whole design concept is about and the impact it's having @ good ol' PSU. I'll also be pushing some Drupal in Higher Education consortium stuff and talk about ways that everyone can get involved in this very unofficial, grassroots style collaboration (more or less running the table on Drupal Camps :) ). Everything can be directed in whatever direction those in attendance would like. I will say I recently gave a 2 hour talk about what we've been up to and ran out of time so there's a whole lot of fronts for attack on this one :p.

RE: Drupal as an eLMS
Hi, Bryan.
One of the more exciting things about Distance Learning is open, platform-independent content, and interoperable Sharable Content Objects.
Do you see Drupal one day able to handle SCORM, like Moodle does? If not, do you see Drupal serving as a Learning Management System, a gateway through which to access Moodle as a Learning Content Management System?

Drupal and Moodle
There's an existing Drupal Moodle Integration module. http://drupal.org/project/moodle
However, I believe Drupal will eventually have a module to duplicate (and surpass) Moodle's functionality, and itself be a full LMS. (Since Moodle is also GPL'ed, it's possible it may actually become that module.)
SCORM...no...
and here's why. There have been tons of attempts at SCORM and from working with systems that have SCORM capability and all of them have their own spin on it. I don't like packaging standards and never have. There is a dev SCORM module for Drupal but from every site / system I've used there's now more of a push towards OER and sending data via RSS. I think lightweight standards like RSS will be the best way to deal with content and content packages.
I'm still a bit shaky on the whole learning material packaging blah blah blah. Your setting things up SOOOOO specifically in one system with all it's capabilities that I don't think anything is truly 100% portable. May-haps I'm wrong as I haven't followed it in awhile I'm much more interested in an integration of Moodle / Drupal. A mash up system is safer for a few reasons....
Drupal does content management better then Moodle, so there's no reason for Moodle to try and be Drupal in that area
Moodle does LMS stuff better then Drupal, so there's no reason for Drupal to try and be Moodle in that area
Here's something I've written up on the topic as I was just able to write about this stuff anyway -- http://wp.me/pxfFe-L

I'd love to see a Diagram...
[disclaimer - I've built and taught courses with Moodle, but I'm new to the LMS integration space - I may ask a dumb question]
If and when there is a huge library of distance learning SCOs out there and you don't need to put so much effort into creating them but rather choosing and integrating them, that might change. I don't know if multimedia simulations fall under the SCO heading (we know that simulations are powerful DL activities but very expensive in hours to build).
I looked at the module description, but it would be really helpful to have a diagram of how all this works. Svein-Tore made a distinction between a Learning Management System and a Learning Content Management System once....how do you map those terms here?
I'm thinking "learning management" has to do with managing users and access and user data, but "learning content management" refers to the kind of content that could be shared between universities and open learning initiatives, if interoperable.
Have you ever made a diagram to illustrate the run time environment of the system you're building? Something like http://www.erc-assoc.org/manual/bp_ch4_7.htm - image location http://www.erc-assoc.org/manual/fig_4_7_3.jpg - do you have anything like that?

working up diagrams now
I'm working up some system designs and information sharing ideas for a massive system overhaul both in my college and at a university level. No idea if either would be implemented but at least it gets my unit thinking more about where we're going and what will be possible in the future (or what should be at least). Diagrams are in the works, please continue this discussion on the blog entry I left before since this is kind of an old thread and I'm trying to blow this into a larger discussion about CMS/LMS mashups.
As for term maping. Learning management system I see more as the syllabus / system end of things to manage rosters and the inter workings of a school / university. Learning content management I start to think more object repository for sharing across universities like you're talking about. I won't promote the company here but there is a group that touts creation of a drupal / moodle mashup for UPenn.

distance learning in developing countries
Hi there,
I am looking to see if we can use Drupal to set up a distance learning site for teaching students in places like Afghanistan and Nepal.
I don't want to re-invent the wheel - so would be really great if there's any tips or suggestions from people with experience on this.
I'd like students to be able log in, and this opens up the courses / modules (downloadable PDFs, videos, etc) that they have access to. They can also participate in forums or connect with mentors, and be able to sit for tests and quizzes.
Any tips or suggestions appreciated.
Thanks, Sam.
