It's difficult to answer

It's difficult to answer such a question knowing little about your actual requirements, however I suspect you will find this case study of great interest: http://drupal.org/node/141187

More specifically, you'll want to take a close look at the following modules: CCK, Views and Contemplate.

I hope that helps!

I really found David Mercer's book helpful

David Mercer's book on Drupal -- available at Amazon -- helped me a lot.

I do a community site, and in addition to core Drupal, I use:

aggregator
buddylist
blog
book
comment
event
image
invite
userpoints
votingapi
simplevote
forward

I was surprised when I looked at my /admin/modules page just how much was there -- a much longer list than the above. If there's interest, I can post a screenshot of my /admin/modules page.

(Note: my community site is on 4.7, so if you're starting with 5.0, your list of modules will probably be different. Unfortunately, both books I know about aren't new enough to cover 5.0. There's an upcoming book from O'Reilly, though).

Additional detail would be helpful

Any additional detail on setup, process, and community building would be a great learning experience. This drupal dojo lesson may also be of interest - http://groups.drupal.org/node/5139.

Ah, that's true

True! To my (happy) surprise, I found 5 copies at my local, run-of-the mill book superstore. After flipping through it, I realized that it's at a very different level than either David Mercer's book or Building Communities with Drupal, Wordpress, and PHPbb. Pro Drupal Development is really aimed at someone putting together a site who is a programmer, or who wants to build new modules, so it's very different from the first two books, which contain relatively few code snippets and more about installing and configuring Drupal and related modules.

A nice source...

A newbie in Drupal I have found the podcast at lullabot.com (http://www.lullabot.com/podcast) very informative. Some Drupal-gurus come together every week or so, to talk about new stuff in Drupal and usually also to discuss a certain topic (such as top 40 modules, a particular project, and so on). They also have a interviews with some big names in Drupal development.

(I heard about the Pro Drupal Development there, that's how I came to think of the podcast here.)

Anyway: If you want to have an easy way of staying updated in Drupal development, the podcast is one choice.
If you try it, make sure you also browse the podcast archive to find any old podcasts of particular interest to you. (Only the last 10-20 podcasts are included in the podcast feed.)

Two other places for learning

itangalo's picture

I recently found http://www.theartlab.net/podcast/drupal-school
and the Lullabot podcast I posted about before made me look up a series of article written by some IBM guys:
http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/ibm/osource/implement.html

I haven't read them yet, but they seem really useful.

PS: Shouldn't we start a new thread (wiki page?) on good places to learn about Drupal? The main post in this thread doesn't really say much about its contents.

new title

i changed the title of this post according so it reflects the contents of the thread. i don't mind that the initial post is thin. when we title and tag posts, we are reflecting the contents of the comments too, IMO.

anyone can become an admin of thios group and help with tagging and titling content. just send a requets to one of the administrators. see the subscribers page for a list of admins. click on a name to send them email.

Wiki for learning resources

itangalo's picture

I'm going to write a wiki page this weekend (Swedish time) to sum up the information in this post, unless
a) I'm presented with a good reason not to do it; or
b) someone does it before me.

Learning resources are probably useful for many people joining this group, but this thread is just too difficult to navigate.
