What makes a design "Googley"?

There have been a few rounds of discussions on Drupal UX goals/principles this past year, so I thought this announcement would be of interest to the community:

"Late in 2007, our User Experience (UX) group—which does user interface design, visual design, user research, web development, and user interface writing—set out to articulate the principles that ought to guide Google designs worldwide. What are the fundamentals that all Google designers and researchers accept? Which approaches to design are particularly "Googley"? How can we encourage teams throughout Google to dream big and make smart design decisions?"

I've got two ideas of Seattle DrupalCamp logos in need of a designer.

One is for a button, and the other possibly for a shirt. If you've got the skillz, drop a note here or send me an email directly (through the contact tab) and we'll talk.

New Features and a New Look for Drupal NYC

I've taken advantage of the new Panels integration with Groups, http://groups.drupal.org/node/10445, to create what I hope will be a more useful site for the NYC Drupal community. The site now has the a welcome panel and a featured post in the top row. The next two rows list the latest Discussions, Polls, Events, and Wiki posts. Finally, the good old river of news lists all posts to the site in chronological order.

Adobe Photoshop Express

Adobe just released Photoshop Express - a free online photo hosting service and editor. It looks really promising; this app really impressed me. It has tons of little features but all presented very well and simple, in my opinion. The application was done in Flex and offers these features that anyone can use for free.

  • Photo hosting (2GB)
  • Load/Browse photos from Facebook, PhotoBucket, and Picasa (Google)
  • Edit photos
  • Preview edits in live mode and with scenario example previews
  • Make 2D/3D slideshows (that rock!) and even share them (perfect for portfolios and photographers)
  • Full-screen mode (awesome!)
  • Share photos/galleries
  • Rate photos

Pluralism Template Ported to Drupal 6 Theme

After walkah's presentation on Drupal 6 Themeing, I ported and contributed a theme to drupal.org. Some really great information that inspired me to contribute a new theme. I did a relatively detailed write up in the showcase forums.

Thanks James, for the great presentation and answering the question we all had.

We're having a design contest for the Drupalcon Boston 2008 logo! The winner gets the pride that comes from seeing their logo used on the conference t-shirt, and in promotion on the Drupalcon site and elsewhere.

There is very little time left before the conference, so the contest has a short fuse.
Entries must be submitted by January 25, 2008!

For more info and submissions go here.

Drupal Store / Drupal Shop - for Drupal Association

Hello fellow Drupalers,

Bence (http://groups.drupal.org/user/13320) has a point. Ironically I was on IRC tonight storming up this idea with amazon and webchick. Personally, the whole thought stemmed from wanting a Drupal coffee mug as a gift, much like http://buytaert.net/drupalcino. After asking around on IRC I was informed Boris has a site on cafepress (http://www.cafepress.com/drupal). That storefront should be on Drupal.org to generate more sales etc leading to a bit more funding for Drupal Association.
