MPEG-4/mp4 becomes the standard codec.

From now we have decided that mpeg-4 aka mp4 is the new standard video format for distributing screencasts.

Note! .mp4 being the file extension it selves and mpeg-4 being the name of the format/container.
Learn more about it here @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mp4

Mpeg-4 is widely used to distribute and promote video over networks like the iTunes wich we might use to promote drupal and the dojo screencasts. For specific tips on encoding screencasts, see mpare's documentation.

Tips and Encoding Settings for Long Duration Screencasts

After several sets of trial and error I found that the settings provided in this document have rendered desirable output for me when creating basic “screencasts.” These settings have been tested on long duration videos, in excess of 1 hour. I have had final file sizes as low as 66 MB for a video that is nearly two hours long with a final screen resolution at or near 800 x 600. Your usage and mileage may vary but these settings have proven successful for me.

How to join a live dojo lesson

There are three things you need in order to join an online dojo lesson: two pieces of software, and some time.

  • A newer-model, javascript-capable browser. We recommend Safari, IE7, or Opera or Firefox2.
  • Teamspeak and a set of speakers or headphones. The audio sometimes streams directly to all participants through an embedded applet in the webpage, but sometimes it doesn't, so being able to log via Teamspeak guarantees you'll get audio.
  • A couple of hours and a willingness to ask questions. Seriously, that's it. With the two pieces of software listed above, and a willingness to learn, you will be able to enjoy a peek into the inner workings of Drupal each week.

Internet Relay Chat: an intro to Miranda IM (Windows) and Colloquy (Mac OS X)

In addition to Skype and WebHuddle, the Drupal Dojo used Internet Relay Chat (IRC) for the first lesson on Thursday, January 4, 2007. IRC is a useful tool for Drupal developers and users to quickly resolve issues, collaborate and work on Drupal modules and themes, and, among other uses, consult with fellow Drupal consultants.

There have been many questions in the Dojo regarding how to get started with IRC, and it is presumed that the Dojo will continue relying on IRC for future lessons. Although it appears an improved screen-sharing application will be used for future Dojo lessons, having a stand-alone IRC program and knowing how to use it will be helpful in order to access the various Drupal channels should you need them in the future.

With that in mind, the following article is provided with the hope that it will be helpful and have you up and running with IRC in as little time as possible. It is a simple guide and is based on installing Miranda IM, which is designed to run on a Windows machine and will allow you to tie in IRC, Yahoo IM, AIM, MSN, Jabber, etc. For an IRC that will work with Mac OS X machines, please read this comment on Colloquy.

Please read on for more info and post your Miranda/Colloquy-related questions here if you need help. Hopefully someone will respond and be able to help you.
