google apps

Hi all, I'm new here..just thought I'd get some opinions on what Drupal can offer to a k-12 school district (10k students). We are currently evaluating CMSs and we're down to Joomla or Drupal. I've done my own experimenting and searching online but I thought I could get some insight from users who already are using Drupal.

We will be hiring someone to initially create our theme and design our site (bc of time). We have a great deal of knowledge in web design and programming from myself and my coworker, so customizing in the future and integrating with other systems is crucial.

Overview: This project aims to upgrade grupal and extend it to support Groups , OU, User Profile and developing Google Apps in Drupal.

1) Upgrade Grupal to D7
2) Extending Provision API to support Groups & OU
3) Integrate Drupal User Profile with google (using User Profiles API)
4) Devoloping an API in Drupal to create Google Apps using Drupal, will be working on these Google

Overview

The project aims at extending the DrupalGapps (Google Apps Framework for Drupal) module by:

1. Improving and adding more features to existing DrupalGapps API.
2. Developing wrappers and applications (as modules) for Google's service-specific APIs by using the DrupalGapps API.

State of DrupalGapps Framework (module)

DrupalGapps Framework is a project that aims at seamlessly integrating Google Apps with Drupal.

I work at a small college and historically the students are not given an email account but can use their personal email account for "school business" The problem is that students have email addresses like "sexybabe123@example.com"

Does your school give out a school email address for students to use?
What platform is used to manage students emails (exchange, etc)? Specifically, does anyone have experience with using google apps as their provider? Google apps seems like a great way to go but what the disadvantages?

Since I haven't done any development work in Drupal to date, I thought I could contribute by listing some of the pertinent resources I have been exploring over the past year that seem to be part of "the solution" (if there is a single solution).

Google Apps have an API for adding users, it would be very useful to be able to setup users directly from Drupal.
A similar thing has been done for moodle : http://code.google.com/p/moodle-google/, so Drupal shouldnt stay behind :-).
If it sounds too easy, we might add integration between spreadsheets and CCK contents (to be able to publish "structural data" on a drupal site just by entering them into a google spreadsheet of the same structure).
Maybe this other one could stand as a project itself ?

As I've mentioned in the past, another student and I had been tasked with developing Google Apps modules for SoC 2007. SSnider has since made public the excellent Google Auth module.

On my side of the project I've been developing abstraction code for the Google Apps API to make it more Drupal friendly. Part of this development is a user provisioning module. Before I make any of this public, I need a wish-list for a Google Apps provisioning module. I want to make sure I haven't missed any major features. What features do you want? What features are more important than others?

I think the google apps ideas is excellent! These are some of my favorite tools to use with my students. Unfortunately , I have no idea what an API is or how it works...

Also... What module adds the Wiki pages to this site? I've been looking for a wiki module for a long time! Do any of you have much experience with it? Can multiple students edit the same page at the same time? Will it work with a WYSIWYG plugin?
