Drupal 6

I encourage Greek Drupal users and contributors to come and join us in our effort for a localized Drupal 6 in Greek.

Version 6RC1 is already here (6RC2 will be shortly out), the strings are frozen and all you have to do is start working with your favorite .po file editor and contribute for a smooth experience of Drupal 6 in your native language!

What are the goals for the project?

Now that the project is ready to go, we need to establish the goals for the project. I have several general ideas. Please suggest more.

1. General Improvements for Drupal Core (based on results of UMN usability lab testing)
2. Node-add/edit Forms
3. Usability Guide/Handbook for Drupal Developers
4. UI Patterns for Drupal
5. Managing Many Items With Tables, with;
   • links to items and related objects
   • data display columns
   • operations individual items
   • operations on multiple items
   • filters
   • table headers
   • sorts
   • pagination
6. Fix 'local tasks' (Tabs) (Split into, local actions/operations, local navigation)
7. General Improvements for Selected Contrib Modules; Panels, CCK, Views, Imagecache?

Chris Messina's (aka Factory Joe) review of drupal 6 is a big contribution to drupal usability. I have highlighted about 50 actionable issues that have been raised and/or discussed through this review. Most of them are trivial changes for drupal 6, but are key usability improvements. Many are simply improving the help text. Some are larger tasks that require more work and changes and should probably wait for drupal 7.

We've hit the Drupal 6 code freeze, and a call went out today to start upgrading modules for Drupal 6.

So I'm going to draw a line:

I will start porting MySite to Drupal 6 after DrupalCon Barcelona in late September.

Effectively, this means that the Drupal 5 branch will freeze on that date. I will take the newest stable release (currently 5.x.2.8) and port it to Drupal 6.

My general rule is this: Once I start developing for the new Drupal version, I freeze features for past versions. That means that 4-7 is bugfix only, and 5--2 would be shortly.

We have posted a patch to support object translation of certain Drupal objects (content types, user profile fields and categories, site settings, and so on) to multiple human languages. While we have clear concepts and very good ideas for the user interface (which we though before that would not be easy), performance-wise we are at crossroads. We would welcome beginner as well as expert reviewers to come and share their performance ideas about Drupal object translation, so Drupal 6 can include a mature translation infrastructure, advancing ahead of the competition. ;) We need your input!

I refactored the core profiles wiki pageto focus on an additional Quickstart profile. Please review, edit the wiki, and add your own suggestions.
