open curriculum

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Proposed Specs for Competency System

there are two parts: Competency repository and the competency-to-product mapping module

Competency Repository

The repository is a space/site dedicated to storing community defined Drupal-related competencies. But what is a competency? How are competencies organized? I have been doing some pondering and tested my thoughts with a google search.

Survey: What do Drupalistas do?

We worked on this survey collaboratively to gain an understanding of what people really do in Drupal. We formed a hypothesis that 'roles' exist conceptually, but maybe not in the wild. Read some background to the working group.

Take the survey http://gs-survey.com/s.asp?s=12001

About it: This survey is a first step in understanding what Drupalistas do.
Who should take it? People who develop, design and maintain Drupal websites.
The survey takes approximately 8 minutes to complete.

Please help spread the word, thank you!

Learning Drupal working group

The conversation started in a BoF at San Francisco on "Learning Drupal". One of the most active discussions was around the idea of an open curriculum. We decided to meet online and continue the conversation and open it to the wider community.

Next Steps from Week Four

  • Analysis of the survey results,
  • development of the "starter taxonomy", and
  • filling out of the learning areas indicated by that vocabulary

These are the beginnings of competencies and objectives in Drupal learning.

Some possible characteristics of a successful/useful open curriculum

I'm reposting this here from http://drupalkata.com/curriculum/node/466 at Gus Austin's request.

Inspired by the IRC discussion on 3 May, here are some notes on criteria by which we could judge the success of a curriculum design project. Sorry, it's all very sketchy and provisional but perhaps can serve as some sort of contribution to the discussion.

A useful/good curriculum will have the following properties (sort of a unit test for the curriculum):

Drupal Learning Objectives Chat

Start:
2010-05-10 03:00 - 04:00 America/New_York
Organizers:
Event type:
Online meeting (eg. IRC meeting)

Last week's Training and Curriculum Chat ( read transcript ) on #drupal-dojo led us to a few actionable items:

  1. Our next meeting will be Monday, May 10th, 3PM Eastern time (US)
  2. Come up with an agenda for next week's meeting. Also, Ryan needs more experience moderating meetings on IRC.
  3. Interested parties should use a wiki page to collaborate on a list of possible Jobs or Roles. See below.

Examples of community mediated curriculum in open source software

Have an example of a community mediated open curriculum?

In the most recent #drupal-dojo chat we had last night (or yesterday afternoon) we laid out some plans to start stirring a discussion around a community-mediated curriculum. We're first talking about developing a common language and working on our goals for the group.

To this end, it's good to look at how other open source communities have traversed the same ground.

The WaSP Interact project is a great example. http://interact.webstandards.org/
