SEO

I learned from some SEO experts that they have reservations when it comes to using mega menus. They are mostly concerned with the large number of links (link dilution problem) , many of them unrelated to the current page. Some recommend to have just a seperate page with all links that is loaded via javascript, completely by-passing the drupal menu system.

Does anybody have any thoughts on that ?

I have heard many experts state that the use of a CDN has no impact on SEO, but I am not convinced. Clearly speeding up a website WILL have a positive impact but my primary area of concern is with regard to PageRank.

My understanding of pagerank is that it is calculated on a per domain basis and that each sub-domain is considered a separate domain.

Drupal use links as a main element for the navigation in UI. We open help pages with the links, open many auxiliary pages. But search engines will try to index that links. So people will try to close these links by the robots or any other technique. May be there are some alternatives of using links in UI (forms for example).

With many of the businesses marketing on the Internet there seems to be a lot of emphasis on creating a handsome looking site, but to what end? Isn't the idea to convert visitors into customers? Without excellent content on the site what businesses are left with is equivalent to a brochure that isn't read.

The question is, how will the site be used, and is it designed to help the client sell more or have their business awareness greatly enhanced? If it isn't doing at least these two things, what is the point?

Since several people in our group are interested in SEO they may be running the Drupal Meta Tags module (http://drupal.org/project/nodewords). Apparently there is an issue in the module where, if certain config options are set, it will completely exclude your site from Google! Here's what my colleague Owen Barton just sent out about this:

We use a service called IfByPhone that offers "Dynamic Phone Number Insertion" (DPNI). This is a service that swaps out the phone number on your site based on where the visitor came from. It's like using a different phone number in the yellow pages, on a billboard, and on a TV ad. That way, when you get your phone bill, you can see how many people called you from each ad. This could work similarly with the search engines. Someone came from Google, show them number A. Yahoo, show them number B. Drupal.org, show them number C. Etc.
