Accessibility of Layout Builder - Design Review with the UC Berkeley Web Access Team

Yesterday, Ted Bowman (Acquia), David Snopek (Panopoly distro maintainer) and I (core accessibility maintainer) met with the Web Access team at UC Berkeley for a detailed accessibility review of the new Layout Builder module in Drupal 8 core.

We looked in detail at various prototypes - some were pen-and-paper concepts, others were working code. In particular we discussed various ways to re-order blocks without a pointer device. This is the biggest single challenge, how to help users with lots of different input devices without over-complicating the UI.

Problems with weight range in book module

Hi,
I'm Germano from Italy.
I'm a blind developer and I use drupal 7 for my website.
I have a problem with book weight range: in drag & drop mode, I can write all chapters I want and reorder it by dragging. So, Drag & drop is not accessible for screen reading software. Therefore I use weight combobox to reorder book items. Unfortunately, book weight range is -15...15, so, only 31 items can be reordered.
There is an other way to perform this action? Or a module?
I would like to have a module that is compatible with drupal 8 also, 'cause I will migrate my website to drupal 8 as soon.

Accessibility Vetting

As part of my work, I often find myself spending significant amounts of time trying to determine whether a given module meets all the accessibility criteria. More often than not, flaws are discovered, which leads to more work in order to make the module usable. Many times this is not an easy process, as it involves a lot of research.

I can't help but think that a lot of people go through this process, yet I cannot seem to find a good source of information on which modules might already have been vetted by someone else concerned with accessibility.

TRUE/FALSE: "Open source is not accessible compliant."

Recently, the Chief Information Officer for the Government of Canada - Alex Benay - posted on LinkedIn, seeking input on the following:

"Open source is not accessible compliant."

I'm writing a formal response and wanted to get feedback from the community, specifically the working group on Drupal accessibility.

While we can only speak to accessibility in Drupal, I think it's important to have well-formed arguments that disprove this statement. This is definitely the best place to get those from.

Looking forward to your responses.
