A group for talking about Drupal distribution profile development groups.
Created as an informal response to Dries' blog entry about potential pitfalls in creating Drupal distribution installation profiles, the intent of this group is to provide a forum for discussing the topic on a very broad scope in the interest of promoting collaboration, cooperation and communication among developers.
This group is a good place to: announce new projects and the goals behind them, identify common goals and best practices for distribution profiles as a whole, explore options for collaboration and consolidation where possible, and collaborate with developers working on unrelated installation profiles in order to present their sum as a consistent experience to the end user.
I am only going to apologize once, and this is it. I am sorry for being a noobie to Drupal and LAMP and Aegir. Done. I am excited about using installation profiles, generating them and using them. I cannot quite understand how to create one. I would like to learn using my first play/learn/test drupal site. Being new to PHP and Drupal, but familiar with ASP and VBA (sorry about that too.), I think I should manage if I can just get a leg up.Read more
I have been using install profiles for a while now, but I have never used a multi page, form, wizard style install profile. I was hoping to make something more generic that I use to build sites more quickly. Up till now I have just been reusing the same one over and over and rewriting the parts that do go from site to site.
So to do this I followed the guide in Pro Drupal Development's install profiles chapter and found that it doesn't work. The submit functions are never called. I even downloaded the books source and ran that and it doesn't work either.Read more
The project is a community media/feed aggregator/news space/conversation space. A high level run down of the featureset includes:
- Customizable user profiles;
- Discussions with embedded images, audio, and video;
- Publishing pictures, audio, and video via mobile devices and/or email;
- Content aggregation via rss;
Let's knock these issues out so we can have awesome distribution on d.o by the time Drupal 7 is released.
Community products usable out of the box : How is Drupal able to "compete"?
BrainStorming session Monday 3:00 to 4:00 pm Copenhagen time, Register at http://groups.drupal.org/node/88459)
Drupal has now at least two community products usable out of the box. http://commons.acquia.com & http://openatrium.com
(Edit 20100822) http://drupal.org/project/voicebox targeting targets community media
+ facebook like feature http://sndemo.dev3.webenabled.net/node/1
There is a need to see how those projects compare and are able to "compete" with non-Drupal products.Read more
Sorry if someone thinks I'm cross-posting too much, but I just wanted to get opinions from everyone who might have a stake in this :)
Alright, so I'm trying to think how I can do my part for this little community, and since I've got some degree of proficiency with Adobe Premiere and After Effects, I thought I might be able to put together a little video to explain exactly what Drupal is. I'm envisioning something with a catchy beat, and graphic/text elements -- no voice-overs. I'm in the really early stages of thinking about this, but I'm considering this picture to be my biggest influence right now as to the feel of the presentation:
(I really like the tetris-like style of it, and think that's something to work with!)Read more
A couple of weeks ago we launched Modulecraft an awareness & fund-raising project that aims to rally Drupal professionals around a shared effort to create the ultimate toolset for Drupal business. The first fundraising round has as goal the development of a documentation distribution for Drupal that uses a similar approach as the localization server and that enables a distributed/federated documentation architecture for the Drupal project. As a Drupal user you'll be able to get a set of documentation from the drupal.org docs server imported into your own site. You will than be able to edit it and build subsets of the documentation for your own projects. You'll also be able to submit topics that were edited or created by you on your own infrastructure and add them as suggestions to the Drupal documentation server.
The following is a first proposal for the specification of the Documentation system we want to build as part of the modulecraft project. It is by no means complete, and it strongly needs your feedback. This is our first encounter with DITA and our ideas should really be proof checked by technical writers that have extensive experience using DITA. It also contains some proposes a somewhat exotic usage of RDFa, feedback is also very much needed here. In the coming days I'll be adding new sections to the specification here. This is a wiki so be bold! You can add comments either here or at the original posts on the Pronovix blog. I'll be incorporating feedback into this wiki.Read more
Is there a feature list and competition analysis Drupal or non Drupal intranet usable out of box ?
The main supects (for me) would be :
Build on top of Drupal http://commons.acquia.com & http://openatrium.com
In OpenSource http://buddypress.org/
In MS http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/
In Saas http://www.jivesoftware.com/ for business and http://ning.com for general public
If not already the case we can try to do that together...Read more
You can now commit anything to an installation profile that you could commit anywhere else in the CVS repository. So, if your installation profile requires its own module or theme or something, you can just include those files directly in your profile's directory instead of having to use separate projects for them.Read more
When an install profile is packaged, it contains specific versions of its modules. This total package gets a version number.
e.g. Cool Profile v1.32 = module1 v1.19 + module2 v.3.48 + module3 v0.80
I heard that to maintain the integrity of the install profiles versioning system, its individual modules don't auto-update themselves like a module you've installed yourself would. If this is true, I understand the reasoning behind this, but can someone confirm if it's indeed true?Read more
The second release of Eduglu is out. I've squashed quite a few bugs so installation and the initial setup should be much smoother now. The other highlight of this release was the upgrade to Spaces 3 & Context 3.

Dries said in his DrupalCon SF keynote there were 19 (I think) distributions available. If I go to:
I see a few listed. Where are the rest? Will drupal.org be the go-to place for all distributions or will it be distributed across the web like the feature servers?
OpenPublish 2.0 is out: http://openpublishapp.com/download
- Modular, extensible and designer-friendly theme/template architecture
- Brand-new base theme.
- Improved Features support.
- Detailed installation, usage and theming documentation.
- Reference implementation of jCarousel-based image gallery
- Numerous bug-fixes, performance and stability improvements.
We have a room with AV on Mon 4/19 2:45-3:45 Room 206. Please reply here if you have thoughts about the agenda.
If needed I can talk about the UC Berkeley use case anddo an informal demo of stuff I've been working on with Puppet and my Aegir 0.3 "helper" shell scripts like move_db.php and clone_site.sh...
But I'd love it if others propose agenda/discussion items. This is my first DrupalCON BOF so not sure how much organization is needed. Help me out! :-)
Time is running out to sign up for Drupalcon pre-conference trainings. There are still seats available in sessions ranging from OpenPublish to Ubercart. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to get training from the experts: http://sf2010.drupal.org/conference/pre-conference-trainings
BuddyPress or Ning : Community/Social Networking Website toward a fully functional prepackaged product / SAS based on Drupal / let's works on that at DrupalCon SF
I have received tremendous respons on this subject until now.
50+ comments on the discussion on GDO http://groups.drupal.org/node/45468
100+ people attended the real life Event WordPress / Drupal http://jbingold.com/content/rencontre-des-deux-mondes-wordpress-et-drupal
And today a twiit from a WordPress strategist http://www.twitter.com/roprice
blockquote>@JBingold That session proposal looks terrific.. there's no question of the need for a BuddyPress equivalent in Drupal. ThanksRead more
I am looking for a standardized way to add contents such as any type of nodes into an installation profile.
Suppose you wanna build an instal profile that creates some pages and a contact form, you have to add this pages as arrays and use a function like node_save to add them into the database. This make the profile file really long or you have to split it into more than one file (but it seems there's no standard way to manage them).
I've been working on a social learning site based on Drupal for the past two years as a student at Brigham Young University and am now working towards readying it for its maiden release into the world as a full-fledged Drupal install profile.
My goal with Eduglu is to:
a) Provide a superb out-of-the-box social learning engine to help departments, clubs, classrooms, and other campus groups communicate, collaborate, and learn with one another.
