Distributions

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

A group for talking about Drupal distributions.

At DrupalCon Europe 2020, a BoF (Drupal Distributions - Learning from each other - read about the outcomes here) came up with the idea of distribution maintainers meeting and exchanging ideas on a regular basis to learn from each other. In January 2021, the first meeting took place, we collected topics that affect us all and planned the first discussion rounds (read the meeting minutes here).

We want to meet once a month, present our projects to each other, ask questions, discuss possible solutions and thus grow by working together. For planning and sharing purposes, we have adopted this group.

Originally, this group was created as an informal response to Dries' blog entry about potential pitfalls in creating Drupal distribution installation profiles. We still think this is an important topic (of many!) and plan to discuss such questions as well.

The intent of this group is to provide a forum for distribution maintainers to discuss on a very broad scope in the interest of promoting collaboration, cooperation and communication among them. This group is a good place to: announce new projects and the goals behind them, identify common goals and best practices for distributions, and explore options for collaboration and consolidation where possible.

Materials exchange site feature set/install profile

In the lead-up to DrupalCamp NYC9, I mentioned the idea of creating a materials exchange site, similar (but superior) to http://www.wastematch.org.

I'm still interested in doing this. It seems like a very manageable proposition, and has the potential to foster connection with the city & promote FOSS use in municipal government.

Installation Profiles Are Hurting Our Image

People new to Drupal come to drupal.org and click on Get Started with Drupal. In
step one they can read:

Installation Profiles

Drupal Installation profiles are pre-packaged website solutions for specific use cases.
They include Drupal core as well as additional modules.
More Drupal 7 installation profiles will become available in the near future.

If that is the route they are interested in they will soon feel that Drupal is a broken mess when they
can't find an Installation Profile with a release in the last 3 months.

Security updates and profiles/distributions (especially those hosted outside of d.o)

What tools or processes should we follow for profiles that are hosted off drupal.org when they need to be updated for security reasons.

Currently, all of the modules they use that are hosted on drupal.org will get proper security updates but this could be confusing to the end user (if the profile itself hasn't been upgraded to that module).

What about modules that are hosted elsewhere?

What if the download file is only available from other sites and not packaged on drupal.org?

    Need a bit of a How-To

I am only going to apologize once, and this is it. I am sorry for being a noobie to Drupal and LAMP and Aegir. Done. I am excited about using installation profiles, generating them and using them. I cannot quite understand how to create one. I would like to learn using my first play/learn/test drupal site. Being new to PHP and Drupal, but familiar with ASP and VBA (sorry about that too.), I think I should manage if I can just get a leg up.

Has Install Profile API been deprecated?

I see the latest release of Install Profile API is from 2009, the issue queue is frozen for months...
Is the module deprecated? If it is, indeed, has it been deprecated in favor of something else?

    multi page install profile woes

    Hello All,

I have been using install profiles for a while now, but I have never used a multi page, form, wizard style install profile. I was hoping to make something more generic that I use to build sites more quickly. Up till now I have just been reusing the same one over and over and rewriting the parts that do go from site to site.

So to do this I followed the guide in Pro Drupal Development's install profiles chapter and found that it doesn't work. The submit functions are never called. I even downloaded the books source and ran that and it doesn't work either.

BrainStorming about how Drupal is able to "compete" with community product usable out of the box

    Start:
    2010-08-25 17:15 - 18:00 Europe/Copenhagen
    Event type:
    User group meeting

Community products usable out of the box : How is Drupal able to "compete"?
BrainStorming session Monday 3:00 to 4:00 pm Copenhagen time, Register at http://groups.drupal.org/node/88459)

Drupal has now at least two community products usable out of the box. http://commons.acquia.com & http://openatrium.com
(Edit 20100822) http://drupal.org/project/voicebox targeting targets community media
    + facebook like feature http://sndemo.dev3.webenabled.net/node/1

There is a need to see how those projects compare and are able to "compete" with non-Drupal products.

Soliciting feedback for graphical Drupal promo video

Sorry if someone thinks I'm cross-posting too much, but I just wanted to get opinions from everyone who might have a stake in this :)

Alright, so I'm trying to think how I can do my part for this little community, and since I've got some degree of proficiency with Adobe Premiere and After Effects, I thought I might be able to put together a little video to explain exactly what Drupal is. I'm envisioning something with a catchy beat, and graphic/text elements -- no voice-overs. I'm in the really early stages of thinking about this, but I'm considering this picture to be my biggest influence right now as to the feel of the presentation:

    Only local images are allowed.

(I really like the tetris-like style of it, and think that's something to work with!)

A DITA documentation distribution for Drupal

    Introduction

A couple of weeks ago we launched Modulecraft an awareness & fund-raising project that aims to rally Drupal professionals around a shared effort to create the ultimate toolset for Drupal business. The first fundraising round has as goal the development of a documentation distribution for Drupal that uses a similar approach as the localization server and that enables a distributed/federated documentation architecture for the Drupal project. As a Drupal user you'll be able to get a set of documentation from the drupal.org docs server imported into your own site. You will than be able to edit it and build subsets of the documentation for your own projects. You'll also be able to submit topics that were edited or created by you on your own infrastructure and add them as suggestions to the Drupal documentation server.

The following is a first proposal for the specification of the Documentation system we want to build as part of the modulecraft project. It is by no means complete, and it strongly needs your feedback. This is our first encounter with DITA and our ideas should really be proof checked by technical writers that have extensive experience using DITA. It also contains some proposes a somewhat exotic usage of RDFa, feedback is also very much needed here. In the coming days I'll be adding new sections to the specification here. This is a wiki so be bold! You can add comments either here or at the original posts on the Pronovix blog. I'll be incorporating feedback into this wiki.

Is there a product competition analysis of the main socialnetworking solutions ?

Is there a feature list and competition analysis Drupal or non Drupal intranet usable out of box ?
The main supects (for me) would be :

Build on top of Drupal http://commons.acquia.com & http://openatrium.com
    In OpenSource http://buddypress.org/
    In MS http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/
In Saas http://www.jivesoftware.com/ for business and http://ning.com for general public

If not already the case we can try to do that together...

We have quite some material in previous discutions

Commit restrictions lifted for installation profiles hosted on drupal.org

    FYI: http://drupal.org/node/779476#comment-3294416

You can now commit anything to an installation profile that you could commit anywhere else in the CVS repository. So, if your installation profile requires its own module or theme or something, you can just include those files directly in your profile's directory instead of having to use separate projects for them.

Install Profile modules don't get auto-updated?

When an install profile is packaged, it contains specific versions of its modules. This total package gets a version number.

    e.g. Cool Profile v1.32 = module1 v1.19 + module2 v.3.48 + module3 v0.80

I heard that to maintain the integrity of the install profiles versioning system, its individual modules don't auto-update themselves like a module you've installed yourself would. If this is true, I understand the reasoning behind this, but can someone confirm if it's indeed true?
