OK we are set for Monday, November 6 at 9:00am here: http://www.mediaed.org/ It is a great space with projector and screen.
We have the room until 12:00pm if we want to go that long. There is a coffee shop in the same building.
Suggested topics:
-
I can do a presentation about what I know about theming (the basics) and then people who know more can take it from there.
-
Maybe Tim can teach us about how modules work? Hook function and all that jazz? Maybe look at example.module? (http://drupal.org/node/292)
Also, extra bonus: that night in Cambridge there is a Boston Users Group that’s going to be a great meeting. Check it out: http://groups.drupal.org/boston4 Jeff Robbins from Lullabot.com will be there. If you want to drive in together, let me know.
Could be a really great Drupal Day!

I'll be there
See you then. I may go to Boston, too.

Hi All I'm in for Monday
Hi All
I'm in for Monday morning. The topics of theming and modules would be great!
Rick - I might drive in with you Monday night, but won't know until Monday morning.
Regards,
Baer
cool i'll try to be there.
cool i'll try to be there.
Sorry I missed this
Somehow it escaped me that the November meeting was going to be this early in the month. Apologies.
I learned a great deal from meeting with you all in October and would love to get to be more involved in the group. This November meeting just slipped off my radar.
Cheers,
Philip
had an appointment i
had an appointment i couldn't get out of. how did it go?
I thought it went pretty well...
I personally learned a fair bit when Tim went over the basics of how modules worked and explained the database abstraction that Drupal does so that you don't have to make the usual database connection each time you want to create a recordset to use on a page.
I think that perhaps where it didn't go well is that there were two or three people there that are very advanced and probably didn't get much out of our basic stuff we were talking about. Nobody said that, but I sensed it a bit.
For a next meeting we need ideas for an agenda - any particular topics that people want to discuss?
Best practices for installing MySQL on mac OS 10.3.9?
Hello western mass drupal folk. I met some of you briefly at the meeting at MEF. I'm ashamed to say I'm only just now getting down to work. I have been trying to scour the web for advice about the best way to install MySQL on my mac (Apache and PHP are already installed, yes?). I'm running Mac OS 10.3.9 (not server). I've read so many different things now, that I'm not sure what to do. Is there a distribution like Xampp that's best? (but I already have Apache). Fink? Just direct from MySQL? if so, which one (not debug, I hear..)? Also, is there a different way to go about things if all I'm doing is setting up a test environment (vs actually serving pages?)? As is probably apparent, I am a bit bewildered.
Any advice or success stories would be heartwarming...
many thanks in advance,
lauren
MAMP
Hi Lauren,
This looks good: http://www.mamp.info/en/home/

re: mysql/osx
Sounds like you are going in exactly the right direction.
Entropy.ch has a great and semi-authoritative collection of downloads and howtos for getting these sorts of things to work on OSX.
Try running through the instructions here,
http://www.entropy.ch/software/MacOSx/mysql/
and see if they work for you.
Fink would probably work too, but is not necessary for something this (relatively) simple.
Good luck!

A PHP/mac OS question, and a general appeal for help
Thanks, Tones (did we meet at MEF that day?) and Rick, so much for your ideas. Very appreciated! Well, over the holidays I had to put my Drupal-learning-endeavors on the back burner, but I am back in the saddle now. Which, er, leads me to my next quandry, which I hope it's ok to ask about here.. So, I have MySQL installed, and I enabled the PHP that came preinstalled on my mac (running OS 10.3.9) but it is only version 4.4.4. I talked to my host, and realized that they will soon be transitioning to supporting only PHP5. So, I set about looking for a package installer for PHP5 for panther. Alas! I have not been able to find such a thing - entropy.ch only supports the PHP5 for Tiger installer, and it will not work with panther. I am very new to Unix and the command line, and though I'm quite willing to learn, I am leary of the trying to build (which is the feedback I got from a few forum posts) and enable PHP 5 from code myself - it would probably be very slow going, and I would more than likely mess it up. I have looked at Fink and Darwinports, but have found them a little overwhelming. So, does anyone have any tips?
Also, a larger question: I'm donating some time to a couple of projects (see below for more info) that are very close to my heart and would love to find a local, guru-type individual to call with the occasional 'tech-support' question. Might any of you be interested, or know anyone who might be interested, in consulting for my project/tutoring me a bit in the long run? If so, I'd love to hear from you and what you might charge. Also, on the off chance that anyone would be interested in doing such a thing pro-bono, we could definitely offer a credit in the film and the website and lots of good word-of-mouth-pr, not to mention our endless gratitude.
Here's a bit of background info..
I'm working on two websites - one is for a film about a very unique church in Brooklyn with a social justice mission - the church is a Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) congregation called the Church of Gethsemane, and it is run by and for prisoners, ex-prisoners, and people choosing to worship in solidarity with them. Gethsemane also has a sister non-profit policy change organization, JusticeWorks Community. The film will tell the story of this faith community, and the ways in which it has transformed its members (both prisoners and non-prisoners). Trying to build the site for for the film with Drupal seemed like an interesting idea, since one of the main goals of the film is that it ultimately be used as part of larger grass-roots campaign to create dialogue about the role faith communities and religious institutions can play in the struggle for equality and social justice. For a slightly longer description of the project, see http://hartleyfoundation.org/development/gethsemane.php The other website I'm working on is for the church itself.
