This project has a new maintainer and a new release has been made:

It would be great to have some people test it and feedback on the project page. IMO this module is a must for any school/club/business sites that need their users to create an account without having to provide an email address. The timing of this release of local email is great too, because the 'private message' module is now in release candidate - the perfect partner to take the emphasis of user communication away from using email and onto internal PMs.

Possible to use this in conjunction with an email address?
Does the module support this use case:
Create a registration form that displays the entry field for an email address (in addition to other registration fields), but makes the email optional?
If not, the ability to toggle displaying the email field, and/or making it optional would be a great admin config option for the module --
And I apologize in advance for the scope-creepiness of this comment.
