Drupal Users Attending SXSW?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Only local images are allowed. Is there any interest in finding a night Drupal users lucky enough to be in Austin during SXSWi can get together?

SXSW is my favorite conference. I leave Austin both energized and exhausted every year. In addition to putting together great keynotes and panels, there is plenty of time to mingle with other geek speakers at the evening events. I don't know if it's the weather (Austin is a great place to be in March!), the food (the Iron Cactus serves a deep fried Jalapeño ribeye!), or the free (as in beer) beer, but I'm always inspired after meeting so many people working on such creative, interesting projects.

I don't see any Drupal specific Panels, but there is no shortage of topics that should interest the same folks interested in Drupal (World Domination Via Collaboration, Mapping: Where the F#*% Are We Now?, Accessibility Wars: A Report From the Trenches, "I'm Good, Really!": Self-Marketing for the Freelance Web Geek, AND MANY, MANY MORE) . I find it hard to believe that I will be the only member of the Drupal community in Austin March 9-13.

Last year I went to an improtu gathering of folks from academia lucky enough to have their respective institutions footing the bill investing in our unending quest for knowledge. I found myself talking to many people from that group after sessions because I knew we could discuss how the topic/technology might fly back at the universities we came from.

Yes!

Several people from my company will be at SXSWi. We'd also love to organize events and parties around the members of the Drupal community who attend.

Depending on arrival times (some times on Friday may be a problem), I'm willing to provide rides to/from the airport.

Thanks for the Generous Offer David!

I remember the first time I took the airport bus downtown. I couldn't get over the sign saying, "Firearms are not allowed". Only in Texas!

I didn't mean to hijack the Austin group, but it seemed like the best place to post this to connect the members of the Drupal community who will temporarily be part of Austin's Weird.

Texas friendly

David, Aaron, and I are certainly looking forward to this year's SXSWi. If there's anything we can do to make your stay in Austin more enjoyable, please let us know. I'm sure that goes for the Austin Drupal Group as a whole, too.

While I can't speak for the rest of Austin Drupalers, I promise to leave my collection of concealed handguns at home.

Concealed, eh?

The great thing about a concealed handgun is that no one ever really knows about it... until one needs to use it! ;)

And I make no promises! After all, Marines like to be prepared! :)

I wasn't too involved in last year's SXSWi and, due to cost concerns, only attended the free exhibition part of it at the Austin Convention Center in which there were probably over 100 exhibitors. I met a couple of folks from Vancouver - one from Bryght and one from Raincity Studios.

I think some of us who live in Austin will be very interested in any "events and parties around the members of the Drupal community." Thanks to you and David for your comments and I hope to hear more about plans to get Drupal folks together.

On a side note, I hope the "sign up" module gets ported to 5.0 soon because I think it's a needed tool for gauging interest in events like this.

Me too

I'll be down there. I'm looking forward to the SXSW interactive. Last year my manager screwed up and registered me for the music portion. Had a good time and saw some cool bands but didn't learn much besides the fact that the music industry is fucked.

I help manage bag stuffing and transpo at SXSW!

txpolo's picture

I'll be there this year for sure. I've volunteered for the SXSW festival for a number of years now. Any other volunteers out there email me or hunt me down at the bag stuffing or transportation. (I'm a shift leader for bag stuffing... the one usually wearing a blue polo cap that says "Texas Polo" ) We had 18,000 total bags last year (film, tech, and music) and i hear we have more! It's going to be a great SXSW again!

Sorry I haven't been involved with this group very much lately. I had contacted Walt a number of months ago about getting the meetings going and just got way too busy with business. I've just gotten back from shooting a feature in Portland, OR and will hopefully be getting back soon to my module programming, php meetings, drupal meetings etc. Anyone else building modules or involved in the php Austin group too? Anyways I look forward to meeting all of you hopefully soon!

David

For Sure.

kreynen,

Are you able to edit your initial post? If so, could you please edit it and at the very top in big, bold letters, state that any future SXSWi posts should be made to the SXSW Interactive 2007 group?

The SXSWi 2007 group was just created on Feb 7th and should be where folks start posting any SXSWi comments.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you and having a Drupal get-together in Austin during SXSWi 2007.
