How about making this a wiki

michaelfavia's picture

How about making this a wiki so we can add some information below the sections and really fledge it out, etc. A little collaborative thinking woudl do us good.

added as a wiki here:

Nice Drupalized SXSW logo!

Hey Todd,

The cool-looking Drupalized SXSW logo looks sweet! Nice job.

Are you the guru behind it? If so, what did you use to create it?

Just Photoshop

Thanks for calling me a "guru," but it was just a matter of cutting out the Drupal Groups logo and pasting it onto the SXSW heads. Nothing fancy.

Help in justifying SXSWi for webmaster role

texas-bronius's picture

Greetings, all. With a little structure and documentation, I should be able to swing training funding for the proposed Drupal after-hours training get-togethers. I've added a little to the wiki to that end.

However, would someone please give me some feedback about SXSWi and how it would benefit me as (any of):
- a drupaler
- webmaster
- web application developer/programmer
- Web 2.0 / e-govt strategist

I skimmed the SXSWi site, but unlike other conferences, I wasn't able to readily see a play-by-play of what to expect as far as courses or seminars go. If you are more inclined to explain why I should not attend SXSWi regarding the above roles, I should hear that, too. Either way, I would like to try to make it to the Drupal meet-ups afterward.

Here you go

David Strauss's picture

First, SXSWi -- unlike many conferences -- has the broad focus that asks, "How can we best use technology to deliver information." It's not a single vendor pushing a product down your throat. Nor is it mostly a glorified shopping mall of vendors begging you to sign up for more information.

As a Drupaler, you'll be able to work with Austin's experienced set of themers, developers, and information systems experts. Our previous Drupal meetups have been great successes, and I expect our events surrounding SXSWi to be even better. Because we'll be going to the SXSWi sessions and meeting up for Drupal afterward, we will build the critical bridge from the great ideas discussed that way at SXSWi to implementation in Drupal. We may even churn a few modules out.

As a webmaster, you'll be exposed to broad integration strategies that far transcend the browser. Webpages have ceased to be one-way information tools that users only access from their desktops. Presenters at SXSWi will showcase integration with mobile devices, specialized appliances, and other tools I've probably never seen. Knowing how to extend your skills as a webmaster to more platforms improves your capability to serve your customers when and where they need information.

As a developer, you'll be meeting (largely through the Drupal team) experts in Apache, PHP, MySQL, and related web services. Some are experts in deployment, others in performance, still others in productivity. Whether you're looking for a good way to manage changes to your code or server thousands of concurrent users, we have people here who know the right ways.

As an e-government strategist, you'll be visiting the most tech-savvy state capital. We're constantly developing new approaches to everything surrounding the political system. Austin is the home of Hart Intercivic and a major e-government division of Accenture.

All considered, you'll get enormous benefit from attending the Drupal sessions we'll hold in the evenings. But I recommend attending the conference so you'll be on the same page with some of the ideas we're pushing around.

bum subscription notification

texas-bronius's picture

Regretfully, I missed out on this entirely.. But I wanted to drop my thanks for your reply! I must have missed it soon after my post, and my subscription notification somehow dropped off. (maybe Manage Subscription Notifications is a new feature to groups?.. maybe when I created my profile it overrode some settings?)

With my ear to the ground, I'm looking for another train to Austin.. I will see if April 4 works!

You're not listed

I took a quick look at Subscribers: SXSW Interactive 2007 and didn't see anything that starts with bcs. I don't believe you're subscribed to this group.

Furthermore, your profile doesn't include SXSW.

Austin != SXSW

texas-bronius's picture

Walt- you're on the ball.. thanks for the clarification. I must have missed that SXSW was its own group and not a "special interest" of group "Austin."

..still getting the hang of Drupal "forums" and notifications and such..
