Upcoming Events
Small regular meetings are held in various parts of the country or online, usually on a monthly basis. Please visit the Drupal Ireland meetup.com group for more details on upcoming meetups nationwide.
There is also a separate meetup.com group for organising the Limerick meetups, so be sure to check that one out too.

Trimming node titles
OK, so maybe I am missing something really basic, but this cropped up today when I was creating a directory index for publications on one of our sites.
I created a view using the default glossary view as a reference. When I first created the view and added my filters for Published and Node Type I noticed that the preview list had no sort order so I added Sort By: Node Title and previewed again... was surprised to see something along the lines of:

A Guide to Good EmploymentA new module I wrote at the weekend - Environment Indicator
The Environment Indicator adds a coloured strip to the side of the site informing you which environment you're currently in (Development, Staging, Production etc). This is incredibly useful if you have multiple environments for each of your sites, and like me, are prone to forgetting which version of the site you are currently looking at!
This module can help you avoid making configuration changes to your live server by mistake, by adding a coloured strip to the side of your site, clearly marking each version of the site.
The Environment Indicator settings page allows you to modify some elements of the indicator's behaviour and appearance. Individual settings, such as the text to display and the colour can be overridden for each of your specific environments in the site's settings.php file. This allows you to customise the indicator for each of your environments without needing to make any changes in the database. This means that the Environment Indicator will always display correctly when moving your site from development to staging to production.

Case Study: Concern Fast
I have just published a fairly detailed case study for concernfast.org, which went live a couple of weeks back. You can also find the case study on my blog
I hope you all enjoy reading it, and please do ask if you have any questions.
Read moreSomething I learned today
While theming and developing today I switched from Firefox to Internet Explorer and found that my site had no styles! Ahhh! To save you from possible headaches, here's my finding: IE limits Drupal to 31 stylesheets total. The work-around for the bug is to enable CSS aggregation.
Many modules have their own stylesheets, so when you get to a certain number of modules, plus have your own custom theme, you reach a point like I did today where you pass the threshold. Hope this helps someone!!

Has there been any suggestion or plans for the hosting of the next drupalcamp in Ireland?
I may be able to both logistically and financially help with sponsorship for an event in the new year.
In terms of the next drupalcamp does anyone have any idea what format it may take, does anyone want it to focus on any particular aspects? The first camp I went to in Belfast I enjoyed and presented a couple of sessions, however I feel as though their could be more structure to the presentations to absolute beginners.
Thoughts?

Hi all,
I need to get my hands on a Xen-based VPS, that will support Ubuntu 8.04.
Preferably In Ireland [or at least Europe].
Digiweb will do Ubuntu 8.10 [even though not mentioned on their site]

Slicehost are good - but in the US.

Rimuhosting get good references.

Any others - Anyone with experiences with the above, good or bad?
I always made the assumption that Latency from the US would rule out US providers.
But am I right?

Big up to the Belfast crew!
A fantastic weekend was had by all at Drupalcamp Belfast 2009.
Top notch venue, cracking presentations, lovely grub and coffee on tap.
What more could we ask for?
A big thank you to Stephen, Feargal, Stephen, Chris, Adam, Julie and all the others who put the event together.
Much respect to the sponsors who kept the whole event free [as in beer... well not free beer...but you know what I mean!]

Travelling to Drupalcamp Belfast
Hi all,
Is anybody on here travelling to Drupalcamp Belfast from Galway [or somewhere anywhere close to Galway].
I could do with a lift - don't fancy the long drive myself.
I haven't sorted accomodaton yet, so either Friday evening or Saturday would do fine.
While I'm at it - can anybody recommend a cheap and clean accommodation near to the venue.
B&B maybe?
Thanks
Alan
dynamic link with diaspora
This hasn't been specced out yet in any detail I'd imagine. But did anyone else who read this article by Paul Cullen about proposals from the Global Irish Economic Forum at Farmleigh in the Phoenix Park, think Drupal might be part of one possible solution?

Read moreCity selection for DrupalCon 2010 still wide open
Please note that the list of cities from http://groups.drupal.org/node/26241 (as per the BoF in Paris) is just a list of possible suggestions. Please see the draft document that has been proposed for city selection guidelines: http://groups.drupal.org/node/27246
The goal is to publish that document at the end of this week (after incorporating feedback from the community) and to start receiving city proposals immediately after that. Since we need to have recommendations to give to the Drupal Association by October 15 the proposal phase will have to be short. The proposal phase will probably end October 1. After that we will have the proposals reviewed by the events agency to gather their feedback in time for the October 15 deadline.
If you want DrupalCon in your city/country in 2010 please review the document and add your feedback!

Drupal presentation - OSSbarcamp - need a presenter!!
I was scheduled to give a presentation on Drupal at the OSSbarcamp in Dublin this coming Saturday (open source barcamp): http://www.ossbarcamp.com However something has come up and I won't be able to attend the event at all :(
Would anybody be interested in helping out and taking over the session for me? I haven't prepared any slides yet, so you can basically talk about whatever Drupal thing you want to - just keep in mind the audience will be techy, but not necessarily familiar with Drupal. The session is an hour long - so a 45 minute session plus 15 mins of Q&A.

Hi.
I was wondering if there is any theming expert in the Galway area.
I have to do a custom theme, and have a few problems.
Guess a 2 hour meeting will be more than enough.
Anyone?
Thanks.
Shay.
Read morenew Irish Postcodes system moving out of beta soon
Just got an email from the Irish postcodes guys....their postcode system is moving out of beta now, following a few years of testing.
Their PON Codes (a geo-postcoding system for Ireland) covers Northern Ireland as well, which is useful because the NI postcode system is token at best. The Irish PON code system is very accurate.
Just thought I'd mention it. Here's their website: http://www.irishpostcodes.ie for more info.

All feedback is very welcome and if you happen to be interested, the next open meeting is 7pm, Monday 14th September, 2009 in the Smock Alley Café, Temple Bar, Dublin 2. They'll also be sharing a stand with a number of cycling groups at the Electric Picnic in the Global Green area if anyone is passing.
Huge thanks to Stella who answered a considerable number of questions when development was beginning and to the drupal community at large.
Read moreMac OS X Native or Ubuntu virtual Machine
Hi all,
While my main development machine at work is a Desktop running Ubuntu,
I also have a macbook at home.
Up to now, I've been doing development at home using VirtualBox with a Ubuntu guest OS.
It works pretty well, but at times a little cumbersome - having to boot up twice, the Ubuntu OS isn't as smooth as Mac OSX etc.
But it means my environment is pretty much exactly the same, and almost exactly the same as the VPS I use for a few sites.
I'm just curious what others are up to, and especially how they test in multiple browsers.

Alan
