Mapping in Drupal... the achilles heel and armpit of drupal combined!
hey everyone,
So a fun little google search on this topic turns up my prior complaints with google's complete inability to successfully provide the following functionality:
1- Assign nodes a location (address turned into lat/lan)
2- Be able to display all the nodes on a views map
3- Be able to search by proximity.
Locations and Gamp are supposed to handle this, but of course they don't, and result in all kinds of lame errors and it just doesn't work out. The errors and difficulty getting this to work were quite plentiful.

I created a Flickr set of the pictures I took while at DrupalCon. It includes the Field Museum party, the Lullabot Geek -> Chic show (including Jeff Robbins' band, Orbit), a few snapshots of the actual conference as well as bits of Chicago.
By the way, Portland represented itself well at DrupalCon this year, with over 30 people from our city attending.

So I haven't heard anything about Brewpal, and if I recall correctly it's supposed to be on the Wednesday following the user group meeting, which didn't happen due to Drupalcon. Tell me Brewpal is still going down though please!

For those of you who are agnostic about open source CMS or who sometimes find yourself needing a Joomla resource, you might be interested to know that a new PDX Joomla! user group has started. They have had one meeting and their next meeting is this month. Sadly, of all the days in the month they picked the exact same day of the month as the Drupal User group for their meetings. Poor form, but aside from that it now means that the big 4 open source CMS (Drupal, Wordpress, Plone and Joomla!) now all have PDX user groups.
Read moreDrupal invasion of Portland Startup Weekend?
Startup Weekend Portland is a month away, 4/1-4/3. People announce an idea, form teams, and build a startup in one weekend. Drupal is the perfect tool for rapid prototyping and we're always completely outnumbered by Ruby. Can we get a critical mass of Drupal folks to launch one or two new sites and maybe businesses?

Hey all,
It's time to remind everyone that TOMORROW is our monthly Brewpal meetup (Tuesday, Feb. 22).
As always, no formal agenda... just the opportunity to chat, drink, and work in the company of your fellow Drupalers. Don't forget to bring your laptop and use the free Wi-Fi. Because AC power is somewhat limited, it's best to charge up your laptop before you come.
We get going at 5:00 p.m., but if your job doesn't permit you to arrive until 6:00 p.m. or so, that's fine, too.
So here are the details on TOMORROW's event:
Date: TOMORROW (Tuesday, Feb. 22)
Time: 5:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Git Migration Documentation Sprint
During the Portland Drupal Users group's regular 4th Tuesday Brewpal, I'll be guiding a face-to-face and virtual documentation sprint at 6pm PST on February 22 at the Lucky Lab on 1945 NW Quimby. Virtually, we'll gather on Freenode in #drupal-gitsupport. There's something for everyone from complete beginner to expert. I'll be creating a list of specific topics, and you'll choose to do one of the following:
- Test the steps in sections of documentation for clarity and accuracy
- Copyedit sections of existing documentation
- Create detailed issues and use cases for missing documentation
- Write missing documentation
- Document recommended workflows in your favorite graphical environment
it's a great way to get familiar with the changes that are coming.
Read moreButton Contributions For DrupalCon
Edit: As was suggested in the comments, Theresa set up a page with a PayPal button. Please use that button to make any size donation. However, if you want your name or your organizations name to also appear on the "free buttons" notice, then please let me know by using my contact form.
Those of you who were at our OSCon table or at earlier events run by this group might have seen our awesome pinback buttons that Theresa Pridemore made for our group. You know how we geeks are at conferences, so the buttons have tended to be very popular and get snapped up very quickly. For those of you who would like to see them, you can see them on Skitch (designs include bleed). At OSCon, Dries said the "Don't Hack Core!" button was destined to become a Drupal classic. Even at non-Drupal OSCon we ran out of those "Don't Hack Core!" buttons before the end of day 1.
Theresa and I wanted to order a batch of at least 2 of the designs ("Don't Hack Core" and one of "Developing Harmony") of these buttons from One Inch Round -- a local button-maker that was one of the sponsors for our 2008 DrupalCamp and who make excellent buttons -- and then take them to DrupalCon and give them away to attendees. The idea would be to put them on a freebie table with a sign that reads something like, "Free buttons. Courtesy of the Portland, Oregon User Group." We can even have the group URL printed on the edge of the button (not visible from the front), or just stick with drupal.org.
Why do this? Well, it's fun and adds a fun benefit to the broader community, plus it raises our DUG's profile and it might even help us find new members (I met a number of Portland folks at the SF DrupalCon who had never even heard of our DUG). Plus we'll see those buttons reappear at conferences for years to come, as past experience has shown.
We'd buy 1" inch buttons, which, including shipping, are $65 for 200, $130 for 500 and $225 for 1000. More than 1000 would probably be overkill, even at a conference that likely will have over 3,000 attendees. We'll buy 200 ourselves for sure, but we're looking for others to chip in so that we can take even more with us. So, any takers? Please reply here, or contact me through my contact form.
