Reminder: Today's Very Special User Group Meeting (Special Topic + Special Format + Special Location + Food/Drink)
Hey everyone,
Just a reminder that today's user group meeting at 6:00 pm is very special... in more ways than one. If you haven't been to a user group meeting in awhile, this is one you definitely don't want to miss!
For this meeting, we've got a special topic, special format, special location, and even special food and drink on hand. Did I mention it was special? ;-)
A few things to note:
1. SPECIAL TOPIC: This meeting is meant to get you up to speed fast on essential Drupal skills. For the main event, we'll have Bill Fitzgerald (bonobo) from FunnyMonkey presenting on how to review code. We'll also welcome out-of-town guest Alan Palazollo (zzolo) who will expand on code review skills, explaining how to release code on Drupal.org. You'll also learn how to get involved with Drupal documentation, too.
2. SPECIAL FORMAT: After initial presentations, we'll break up into smaller groups for hands-on code review sessions where you will actually review real, live code! So you'll want to plan on staying longer than our normal meeting end time as we work into the night. We'll even be approving full project applications on Drupal.org, so whether you are a newbie or more experienced, this is a great opportunity to learn from other Drupal developers.
3. SPECIAL LOCATION: To help facilitate the smaller code review workgroups, we've got a special location for this user group meeting. The meeting will be held at the brand new offices of Tigerlogic. It's a beautiful 7,500 square foot space in Goose Hollow with super-high ceilings, exposed brick walls, huge windows, cool couches, and long tables for smaller groups. The space is located a couple of blocks from the PGE Park max station. Here's the address information:
Tigerlogic
1532 SW Morrison St., 2nd Floor
Portland, OR 97205
Note: It's a three-story red brick building located at 16th and SW Morrison, next to the Scottish Rites of Freemasonry. After entering, come on up to the 2nd floor.
4. SPECIAL FOOD/DRINK: Rumor has it that for those staying on for our smaller code review sessions, we'll even have some fun food and drink on hand! :-)
So I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at 6:00 pm tonight!
Cheers,
Ben
Code review small group leaders
Several people at Brewpal said they're willing to advise a small group during the code review at the May 11 user group meeting from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. This is the sign-up event we talked about. If you're a Drupal developer who maintains or co-maintains a module or theme and you can lend a hand, please sign up to help us plan.
The format and structure will all be part of the initial presentation so there's no special preparation. Just bring your experience. If you want to read ahead, see:

Heya folks,
We got some nice feedback from our quick post looking for Drupal contractors. It's exciting to connect with the community.
Read moreGeek question - Why is there no render array for links in D7?
Geek question for the PDX clan,
Anyone got any ideas for why there's not render array for links in D7? There's theme_links() in theme.inc. But why does the theme engine in D7 not take advantage of render arrays? Menu module does not define a render array for menu links either, which maybe isn't it's job, but would seem to make theming overrides much easier than hacking out your own MYTHEME_links() function in template.php.
Any thoughts? (Mikey_p, I know you got something...)

Read morere: Experienced Drupal Developer Sought | Local Company
Regarding this job posting, I don't believe that it's in either party's best interest to execute Drupal development contracts under these terms:
- "Reasonably priced by project, not per hour"
- "Not juggle clients - you work on one client's project at a time until that project is completed"
The first stipulation leads to outmoded, unhealthy waterfall-style development methodologies. The second is something a client should be able to dictate only if they are also offering health and unemployment insurance.

The first part of our May meeting will begin with a brief presentation from Melissa Anderson (eliza411) on how to get involved with the Drupal documentation team, followed by a presentation from Bill Fitzgerald (bonobo) from FunnyMonkey about how to review code. Wednesday's User Group Meeting (Drupal 7 Case Study + Vertical Niche Distributions + Building Social Networks)
Hey everyone,
Just a friendly reminder that this WEDNESDAY (April 13) is the date of our monthly Portland Drupal User Group Meeting.
Here's what we've got on the agenda:
1. "A Case Study in Drupal 7: Care Network by Elite Care" presented by Manuel Mejia
Want to leverage the power of Drupal to address your own specific niche industry or market? Learn how this can be accomplished by examining a real-world case study of the "Care Network"—a Drupal distribution that assists staff and family members in creating "Communities of Care" for elderly and disabled people. Built on Drupal 7, the Care Network helps provision services, monitor community residents, and facilitate social interaction.
In particular, Manuel will discuss unique features of the project including real-time location tracking of all individuals on campus, programable alerts using a wide array of sensors, web enabled recording of daily notes and services, and touch screen monitors used to input and display this information. He'll also touch upon the strengths of Drupal as an application platform and how anyone can extend Drupal 7 core and contributed modules to fit their unique project requirements and needs.
2. "Building a Social Network in Drupal" presented by Ben Kaplan
Have you ever wanted to build your own social network? Or maybe add some cool social networking features to your existing website? In this presentation, Ben will demo some of the latest features of the User Relationships (http://drupal.org/project/user_relationships) and Private Message (http://drupal.org/project/privatemsg) modules—two modules he's worked on that allow you to replicate many features of popular social networks.
And what if you also want to leverage the power of other third-party social networks like Facebook, Twitter, or MySpace? Ben will demo the newest features of the Janrain Engage (http://drupal.org/project/rpx) module, including the ability to authenticate with other social networks, map user data from these networks, share content simultaneously across networks, and integrate with popular Drupal modules like Rules and Views.
Finally, here are the meeting details:
Date: Wednesday, April 13
Time: 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. (after the meeting, we head to Lucky Lab for drinks and conversation!)
Location: OpenSourcery offices (1636 NW Lovejoy St. Portland, OR 97209)
It promises to be really interesting and useful meeting... you don't want to miss it!
See you there,
Ben

A workable "Calendar of Events" for Drupal can be a baffling ordeal to try and get working and usable. Even trying to get a recipe to work can involve hours of wading through patches and comments to get something usable. In an earnest effort to try and reduce the madness, here is a recipe that works very well for our latest project for a client, and includes fixes we developed ourselves.

User Group Review of Full Project Applications
There was talk at DrupalCon Chicago about incorporating some Drupal community activities into our user groups meetings, specifically the review of applications to create full projects. This is a great chance to learn, to perform a valuable service for the Drupal community, and to participate in the community in a more integral way. I'm collecting some of the relevant links in this post, looking to gauge people's level of interest, and making sure this is on the radar for the Aprll 13 user group.

Read morelanguage negotiation - history and re-thinking
We have multiple domains, all allowing multiple languages, each with a different default language, and all sharing some content.
We're currently trying to deal with the following problem scenario:
We have a U.S. site with English as the default language.
We have a France site with French as the default language.
We have a Spain site with Spanish as the default language.
We create a language neutral node on the U.S. site, and we allow that node to be displayed on the French site and the Spanish site. No problem.
