Wednesday's User Group Meeting (Social Web Integration + Janrain Engage + Advanced Git Training)

Start:
2010-08-11 18:00 - 19:30 America/Los_Angeles
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

Hey everyone,

Just a friendly reminder that this WEDNESDAY (August 11) is the date of our monthly Portland Drupal User Group Meeting.

I'm super excited for this one.... We've got two awesome presentations on the agenda:

1. "Janrain Engage: Connecting Drupal with the Social Web" presented by Brian McGinnis, Forest Basford & Larry Drebes (Janrain team members)

Need to quickly connect your Drupal website to the social web? Janrain Engage (formerly RPX) may be just what the doctor (or developer!) ordered. Key team members from Portland-based Janrain will be here to discuss their Janrain Engage service and how it empowers your site visitors to sign-in with their existing accounts on Facebook, Google, Twitter, Yahoo!, MySpace, AOL, or other networks, and then simultaneously publish user comments, reviews or other activities from your site to multiple networks. In particular, the Janrain team will address the current state of the Janrain Engage Drupal module (http://drupal.org/project/rpx), ongoing efforts to port the module to Drupal 7, and the latest roadmap for future module enhancements--plus important insights into how you can best leverage the power of third-party social networks. It's also a great opportunity to learn how local Drupal developers can get involved.

2. "Git for Drupal (Part II, Advanced Git)" presented by Michael Schwern

At last month's meeting, local git expert Michael Schwern did a great job introducing us to git--even demonstrating for us (with tinker toys!) git's underlying simplicity and elegance of implementation. Now it's time to kick things up a notch by going beyond the theoretical to the practical: In this more advanced presentation, Michael will delve deeper into essential git commands--including how to best create repositories, add files, clone, commit, fork, branch, stash, and merge. Because a Drupal project has some special considerations that other projects don’t, he'll cover some important key action steps (such as using remote vendor branches to track Drupal core and modules, leveraging the benefits of github.com, and merging in your local patches). We'll also open up the discussion to experienced git users in the audience who will offer their insights into best practices for using git with Drupal. With Drupal.org switching from CVS to git, now is the time to embrace version control in your projects and become a power git user!

Finally, here are the meeting details:

Date: Wednesday, August 11
Time: 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. (after the meeting, we head to Lucky Lab for drinks and conversation!)
Location: OpenSourcery offices (1636 NW Lovejoy St. Portland, OR 97209)

It promises to be an awesome meeting... you absolutely don't want to miss it!

See you there,
Ben

Ubercart 2 in D6 -- Secondary tabs not rendering...

Cross posted from the ubercart forum, where I am not getting a response

So I'm currently building a drupal store framework along with a simple theme to enable me to create future ubercart stores with greater ease. I'm working (and have largely completed) building a generic theme that shouldn't require much further work to complete. However I've run into a hiccup. I've read of it in a few places online, and the solution is generally "I just said screw it , and it reinstalled, so all was good"

Database Performance question

SO I've got a site that is sometimes excruciatingly slow. I turned on the devel database query log. The best example is a query that accesses the cache table, so it's clearly well indexed. It ranged from 16 seconds to 0.000586987 over many thousands of uses. And it wasn't just one or two at the longer time. Can this be anything in my site? Seems that it must be a server loading issue. The site has a shared account with Dreamhost. Any experiences there?

Finally website now in Drupal, community website url?

Hello,

Well, after many months of working in my free time (what little I've had lately) I finally converted my custom php CMS over to Drupal. Although not totally finished (as personal projects never are) I thought I'd share with the local Portland Drupal Group my progress. The main motivation for the website was to highlight my career and personal interests (like most personal websites no?).

Wednesday's User Group Meeting (Drupal in Cloud + Git Training + Coder Upgrade Demo)

Start:
2010-07-14 18:00 - 19:30 America/Los_Angeles
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

Hey everyone,

Just a friendly reminder that this WEDNESDAY (July 14) is the date of our monthly Portland Drupal User Group Meeting.

It's an extra information-rich meeting with three awesome presentations on the agenda:

1. "To Cloud or Not to Cloud: That is the Drupal Question" presented by Narayan Newton

In this presentation, Narayan will break down some of the performance issues involved in determining whether to use a cloud provider like Amazon EC2 or Rackspace.... or whether it makes more sense to maintain your own data center hardware. He'll also explode some of the biggest myths about cloud computing (including the myth that it's good for everyone). He'll also offer some possible solutions to the biggest cloud computing obstacles related to Drupal. It's a great opportunity to learn from one of the Drupal community's true infrastructure and scalability experts: Narayan has served as Drupal.org's database administrator, helped design Acquia's Amazon EC2 high-availability hosting platform, and consulted for many of the top Drupal companies.

2. "Git for Drupal (Part I, Git Fundamentals)" presented by Michael Schwern

With Drupal.org switching from CVS to git, now is the time to embrace version control in your projects and become a power git user. In this presentation, local git expert Michael Schwern will take you through the fundamentals of using git as a single developer or as part of a larger group--including how to create repositories, add files, clone, commit, fork, branch, and merge. Because a Drupal project has some special considerations that other projects don’t, he'll cover the most important best practices (such as using remote vendor branches to track Drupal core and modules, cleanly upgrading your projects, and merging in your local patches). This presentation, focusing on the basics, is Part I of a two-part series. In Part II of the presentation at our August meeting, Michael will discuss more advanced git topics. Through it all, we’ll see how the apparent complexity of git’s command set hides an underlying simplicity and elegance of implementation. If you ever thought about using version control or git in particular, but thought it was too difficult to learn, you don't want to miss this presentation!

3. "Coder Upgrade Power Demo" presented by Jon Duell

Need to upgrade a module to Drupal 7? Jon will show you how to do it more efficiently and effectively using the Coder Upgrade module. As an active contributor to Coder Upgrade, he'll show you how you can use the module to automatically convert code in your Drupal 6 module to Drupal 7 (plus how the module can provide you with a list of further to-dos, helpful debug information, and a log of changes made). To illustrate this, he'll do a live Drupal 6 to Drupal 7 conversion of the Mailchimp module that we featured in June's meeting, revealing the strengths of the Coder Upgrade module and its current limitations. Learn why getting up and running in Drupal 7 isn't as daunting as you think!

Finally, here are the meeting details:

Date: Wednesday, July 14
Time: 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. (after the meeting, we head to Lucky Lab for drinks and conversation!)
Location: OpenSourcery offices (1636 NW Lovejoy St. Portland, OR 97209)

It promises to be one of our best meetings ever... you don't want to miss it!

See you there,
Ben

What could you achieve with a million bucks?

I just wanted to tell you guys about an exciting initiative taken by my organization that has big possibilities for a variety of open source projects that you might have been dreaming or scheming about.

While chatting to many of you at user groups, camps or conferences, it often comes up that I work in philanthropy and that we give tens of millions of dollars to Oregon nonprofits every year. Then some of you tell me you have great ideas for software projects that could make a real difference. Until now I've always had to reply that unless a nonprofit asked us for money, there was little that could be done. In a number of cases we have given money for the development of software (we currently fund a project that contributes code to Plone), but a nonprofit always initiated the request, even when partnering with a software development shop.

Now, for a short time, there is another way for such projects to become realized. My organization has initiated a new program to ask for ideas for improving the future of Oregon, and we're willing to spend up to a million bucks on one or more of these ideas. The campaign is open to everyone and to any idea, including ideas that involve software. The final accepted ideas will be open to the best people for the job, including businesses, like software development shops.

As you all know, if funds are used to realize one of your ideas, that result in improvement to an open source project, then this would would help not only Oregon, but also any nonprofit/NGO anywhere, or anyone with similar needs. It's a great opportunity to plant the seeds of an idea right here in Oregon and to help Oregon, but then for that help to go further afield as well.

And hey, this is a smart group with a lot of smart ideas about a lot of different things, not just software, so please share any ideas you have. And please pass the word to folks you know. Post your ideas anonymously or post them with your name, so that you'll be notified about progress on that idea and will be associated with it. And comment on existing ideas as comments show support. There is already a great Drupal-specific idea out there so please chip in with your thoughts.

You can find the announcement here: http://www.mmt.org/blog/whats-your-million-dollar-idea-oregon
You can post your ideas here: http://www.ideas4oregon.org/

Is a fellow FOSS CMS slandering Drupal?

Something troubles me and I'm seeking other opinions. Some of you likely have heard about a Portland-based CMS called concrete5. I did a lot of due-diligence before deciding to use Drupal myself, but regardless of that decision my job requires that I be aware of and agnostic about some other good CMS too. c5 being local made them doubly interesting. As a result I looked at c5 a couple of times, reading reviews, talking to their people, watching videos, etc. The short version is, c5 started in 03 as a proprietary CMS and moved to FOSS in 08. Fans of c5 often call it a very nice, easy-to-use little CMS good for small/simple sites, with limited add-ons (modules), about half of which you have to pay for (similar to Joomla).

My concern stems from the conversations I've had with their people and the public statements they make on email lists and on their website. Their commentary is framed in unsubstantiated and inaccurate "Drupal and Joomla suck" language, more than in "this is what makes us great" language. In general, the more someone talks down a competitor, the more threatened by that competitor you know they are. However, as I understand it, it's generally considered really bad form to badmouth other FOSS projects, particularly at the organizational level, and it is certainly bad form to negatively misrepresent them.

For an example, read concrete5's About page and you get:

"Systems like Drupal and Joomla were designed by and for developers. Building and maintaining a site in Drupal or Joomla is pretty complex and intimidating for someone who can't program computers. Imagine having to call a consultant every time you wanted to write a new Word document. How useful is that to your business?"

Now we can all see some truth in this as Drupal has been harder to learn than many and UX has been an issue, but even taking this into account, I feel that at best this is misleading, possibly just uninformed, at worst it is blatant dishonesty. I'm wondering if I'm just being too literal or something, but let me explain how it appears to me. All CMS are designed for end-users, not developers, but c5 make it sound as if their rivals wrote CMS for use by only programmers, which is illogical. Being designed to make it easy for programmers to extend and having mediocre UX is very different from being designed for programmers. They make it sound like only coders are able to use Drupal and Joomla, which again is a falsehood as both have many site-creators with no coding skills. I myself was introduced to Drupal by my wife, a designer, and she was introduced to it by another designer. Yes, to fully get Drupal's power you need some code, and theming involves some PHP, but my understanding is that C5 shares this limitation. The 2nd last line seems diabolical, implying that only a coder can change Drupal and Joomla content, i.e. that they are not CMS at all. They then go on to have a similar go at Wordpress.

So, am I overreacting? To put it in some perspective, this all came to the forefront for me after even worse comments came up during a conversation on the PDXPHP list, where c5's CEO, Franz, said things like, "it's just as powerful as both (Drupal and Joomla)," which to me it clearly is not, given that they have 157 add-ons (modules), a tiny fraction of what Drupal and Joomla have. In a subsequent email, he also said the following, "Sure, there's over 3000 add-ons in Drupal's marketplace but many of them straight up don't work, and the majority will have compatibility issues if you have more than one installed. Their add-ons are intended to be used by site developers, not site owners, so you're taking a gamble any time you see something you'd like installed." The only shred of truth I see in that is that there are indeed many modules that don't work and I definitely think we need more quality control there, but even then he makes it sound like a much bigger issue than it is. Aside from that it seems like a collection of outrageous falsehoods to me.

I'd really like to hear some of your thoughts on this.
