REMINDER: "Brewpal" Meetup TODAY at Lucky Lab!
Hey everyone,
Just a friendly reminder that TODAY (Tuesday, Sept. 28) is the date of our monthly "Brewpal" Meetup.
What is this event? It's an informal meetup each month to work on our own individual Drupal projects in the company of other Drupalers. The idea is that you can work on your own project, ask a question to your neighbor if you're stuck, chat with others about your brilliant Drupal start-up idea, and then take a beer break whenever you want.
If you are bringing your laptop, don't forget to charge it ahead of time (since Lucky Lab's power outlets are minimal).
Here are the details:
Date: TODAY (Tuesday, Sept. 28)
Time: 5:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Lucky Lab Beer Hall
1945 NW Quimby St.
Portland, OR 97209
(Yes, they have wifi.)
So get ready to pack up your laptop and see you soon!

Hey all,
It's time to remind everyone that the next Brewpal meetup is this coming TUESDAY (Sept. 28).
As always, no formal agenda... just the opportunity to chat, drink, and work in the company of your fellow Drupalers. Don't forget to bring your laptop and use the free Wi-Fi. Because AC power is somewhat limited, it's best to charge up your laptop before you come.
We get going at 5:00 p.m., but if your job doesn't permit you to arrive until 6:00 p.m. or so, that's fine, too.
So here are the details on our upcoming September event:
Date: Tuesday, Sept. 28
Time: 5:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Lucky Lab Beer Hall
1945 NW Quimby St.

Sorry if you consider this spam, but I don't have a lot of time to be unofficially hunting for candidates and I am doing this so we hopefully have some more qualified people to choose from!
(I just realized, the Portland group lists normal content AND jobs in the same list. Doh, sorry for the duplication. Looks like I can't delete this either!)

Hey everyone,
Just a friendly reminder that TODAY (Wednesday, Sept. 8) is the date of our monthly Portland Drupal User Group Meeting.
Here is what's on the agenda:
1. "Understanding the Drupal 7 Database Abstraction Layer and Field API" presented by Todd Tomlinson
Two of the biggest and most important changes in Drupal 7 are the new database abstraction layer and Field API (fields in core!). In this presentation, prolific Drupal author Todd Tomlinson will break down everything you need to know to take advantage of these exciting and powerful new D7 features. For those may not know, Todd is the author of two important Drupal books: 'Beginning Drupal 7' (released June 1, 2010) and 'Pro Drupal Development for Drupal 7' (due in October, previous editions of this book have been considered the "bible" for Drupal developers). After his presentation, he'll even be giving away free books and coupon codes!
2. "The Best of DrupalCon Copenhagen" presented by Jonathan Hedstrom
Were you not able to make it to DrupalCon Copenhagen last week? We've got the next best thing! Our very own Jonathan Hedstrom was in attendance and he'll offer his insights on the Core Developer Summit, the "State of Drupal" keynote address, and his favorite presentations and events. It's a terrific opportunity to stay up-to-date on the latest Drupal news and we'll also open up the discussion to others who were in attendance.
For full descriptions of each of the above presentations, you can check out the full meeting announcement here:

Wednesday's User Group Meeting (D7 Database Abstraction Layer + Field API + Drupalcon News + Free Books!)
Hey everyone,
Just a friendly reminder that this WEDNESDAY (September 8) is the date of our monthly Portland Drupal User Group Meeting.
The meeting not only features two awesome presentations on the agenda, but also free books and coupon codes! Here's what we've got on tap:

Todd is also currently leading the creation of 12 major Drupal sites around the country, including a big site for the University of Texas. It's a great opportunity to dramatically enhance your Drupal 7 learning curve by learning from someone who literally just wrote the book on the topic. If you've been putting off learning Drupal 7, now is the time to get going!
How could this presentation get any better, you ask? It's because Todd and his publisher, Apress, will be giving away free stuff! First, Todd has promised to bring a couple of autographed copies of his 'Beginning Drupal 7' book to the meeting and will hand those out to lucky attendees. Second, we'll be raffling off coupon codes for five free e-book copies of his forthcoming 'Pro Drupal Development for Drupal 7' book. Plus, even if you don't score one of the free copies, we'll have a 50% off coupon code for everyone else. Sweet!

Drupal in a Day - Training Pre-PNW Drupal Sumitt
northStudio, VSBT (Victoria School of Business and Technology) and Acquia are happy to announce the 'Drupal in a Day Course' on October 1st 2010, a day before the PNW Drupal Summit!
Drupal in a Day Course
Are you curious about Drupal? Wondering how it can be used, and what you or your team could do with it? Drupal in a Day is an overview of the fundamental concepts of Drupal. It would be good as a foundation for potential site builders and an overview for decision makers who want to look under the hood.

So first off, really hate that I missed the Brewpal meetup, but I'm looking at relocating to Portland and was hoping to get some advise in regards to the job situation here for Drupal heads.
Currently I do mostly publication oriented websites on more of an independent contractor basis (http://lowcountrydog.com/ http://thedigitel.com etc) but wouldn't mind joining a firm.

I meant to ask at Brewpal last night . . .
I had a client whose site uses TinyMCE, ImageField and Insert ask for the ability to choose the cropping region for an image and then place the image within the body of the node.
I found:
http://drupal.org/project/epsacrop
http://drupal.org/project/imagefield_crop
http://drupal.org/project/imagecrop
and TinyMCE's $41 MCImageManager
Only the last one appears to allow cropping of an image that a user can place in the body of a node.

REMINDER: User Group Meeting TONIGHT (Social Web Integration + Janrain Engage + Advanced Git Training)
Hey everyone,
Just a friendly reminder that TODAY (Wednesday, Aug. 11) is the date of our monthly Portland Drupal User Group Meeting.
Here is what's on the agenda:
1. "Janrain Engage: Connecting Drupal with the Social Web" presented by Brian McGinnis, Forest Basford & Larry Drebes (Janrain team members)
Need to quickly connect your Drupal website to the social web? Key team members from Portland-based Janrain will be here to discuss their Janrain Engage service and how it empowers your site visitors to sign-in with their existing accounts on Facebook, Google, Twitter, Yahoo!, MySpace, AOL, or other networks, and then simultaneously publish user comments, reviews or other activities from your site to multiple networks. In particular, the Janrain team will address the current state of the Janrain Engage Drupal module (http://drupal.org/project/rpx), ongoing efforts to port the module to Drupal 7, and important insights into how you can best leverage the power of third-party social networks.
2. "Git for Drupal (Part II, Advanced Git)" presented by Michael Schwern
Michael will delve deeper into essential git commands--including how to best create repositories, add files, clone, commit, fork, branch, stash, and merge. Because a Drupal project has some special considerations that other projects don’t, he'll cover some important key action steps (such as using remote vendor branches to track Drupal core and modules, leveraging the benefits of github.com, and merging in your local patches). We'll also open up the discussion to experienced git users in the audience who will offer their insights into best practices for using git with Drupal.
