Theme development

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

This is a special interest group dedicated to improving and expanding the Drupal theme system including theme functions and templates, CSS, markup, and how contrib modules add in their functions, CSS, and markup.

for example, we'll take stock of the location and number of CSS files and discuss if the architecture can be improved through emerging frameworks like Object Oriented CSS.

We will consider the questions "What do themers need from Core in terms of CSS? Module developers? SEO specialists?" and "What's new in CSS? What does Drupal support? What's the roadmap for CSS support?"

A usable admin theme

I've long since been frustrated about the bad usability of the admin parts of Drupal. While incremental improvements are constantly made, it seems that a big overhaul is necessary in order to move forward. I find it very inspirational to see how Wordpress has hired HappyCog to work on an improved admin interface, based on interviews, research and usability testing. There are some obvious lessons that Drupal can learn from this as well, both from their methods as well as the results. There's a lot of momentum in the community right now to make similar efforts, and I'd be happy to apply as a student to work on this during the summer.

Make Themes able to generate custom images for navigation links, page titles, and the website name

Have themes that could generate images for links so that navigation doesn't have to be plain text, or be able to generate an image for the title of a site or page so its easy to change the title of the site and still have it look fancy.

This could also include being able to customize the image such as by:

  • adding an icon - this could apply to a specific navigation item
  • setting the text color or font - this could apply to a specific item or be applied to all relevant items such as all page titles or all navigation links

Development for Designers: would like assistance to create a place for designers to learn more about drupal development

Because of Drupal's special nature, there are alot of us hybrids in the community: designers with an interest in developing and developers with an interest in designing. I would like to create a place/discussions that dealt with this crossover.

I am speaking from the design pov because, well, i am a designer first and coder/developer second (read: way second). Also, I think that we can close the gap by developing several simple things:

    Theming handbook for 6

Hello, I'm just posting here to let everyone know that the bulk of the new theming handbook is up. Most of it has been rewritten and reorganized. I hope it is accurate and clear enough to get everyone familiar with the theming system.

It's still missing sections on sub-theming (which can get really fancy BTW). I hope to get a few solid explanations and illustrations on the possibilities. Engineless themes and theme engine sections are not there yet but I don't think it's too critical.

JavaScripting could use some help too. I hope someone can fill that in.

    Zen 5.x-1.0 has been released!

After a month and a half beta period with only 5 bugs discovered (and squashed), the O-fficial Zen 5.x-1.0 version has been released. Yay!

Thanks to everyone who helped with new features, bug fixes and documentation suggestions! The help is greatly appreciated!

For those of you who haven't looked at Zen since its 5.x-0.6 days, take it for a spin. No longer do you need to un-theme the Deliciously Blue style out of Zen before adding your own styles. It’s a true base theme.

ubuntuwatch.com - yet another digg clone

digg.com for ubuntu users? Maybe, but like the earlier version of digg; voting on just the nodes(just the voting). Zen theme in new pajamas! nodes have slideshow of imagefield pics(http://ubuntuwatch.com/node/12), with rip-off of the background buttons for multiple pics, from the lullabots! sorry :P sorry to moshe too ;-) (but you have it in new avatar now ;)

I don't plan to commercialize/earn-from-it in any way, if someone of you thought, it was part of my fun times, playing and implementing with Drupal. It was ready since the oct of '07 but could get it online in dec month. And after all Thanks http://HCoop.net/ !

(i know there are poor way of implementations, hacky job on vote button(half rip-off from rubybaboon), and peekaboo bugs are treating me good for IE.., etc..)

No, it's not based on drigg, project from scratch, but I recommend it to anyone who plans to begin with drupal building a similar website. I'll try to publish the recipe in the near future, if time allows... :)

After all hobby projects don't get your skills rusted, what do you say?

Releasing "Web Application", a Proper Web2.0 Theme

I just finished converting a GPL theme to drupal, if you're an aspiring Drupal Ninja this will be a good theme to learn about custom theme options, clean code, and good coding practice!. I added short comments to the css file to explain some of the more obscure methods in there.

    Excerpt from my blog:

I normally don't announce theme releases anywhere but this one is
special. I've worked hard to make this theme work well and the xhtml
template I was porting was well-coded as well.

    This drupal theme
will be a nice addition to the drupal theme repository, it doesn't look too
flashy and it can easily be used as a theme for small business
websites. What makes this theme special is it's high flexibility and
configurability, this theme properly supports 1, 2 or 3 columns
layouts, and it gets even better... The themes layout width is
completely configurable, you can set it as a fixed width in pixels or
as a fluid width, that being a percentage of the browser window width.
You can also set the width of the main content area. The main content
area is set to be a percentage of the total layout width, and when you
change it the sidebar(s) will automatically assume the leftover width.

Enough talking, heres some stuff in list form:

    Bullit proof

    • Doesn't break any drupal admin pages, or get broken by admin pages
    • small backend interface improvements
    • all structural and contextual layout blocks are flex-height (don't break when upscaling the font)

    Fast

    • Theme Images weigh a combined 1,6kb
    • Style.css weighing in at 4.4kb
    • Output HTML is just a minimal (full html output size varies with content)

    Custom Theme options:

    • set a fixed or fluid width layout
    • adjust the % of
width the main content area will take up and the sidebar(s) will
automagically resize to fill up the leftover space
    • subheader and navbar region are dispensable, to get an even cleaner layout!

    Supported native drupal elements:

    • 1,2 or 3 columns!
    • main content / sidebar width configurable through theme options
    • blocks
    • primary menu
    • secondary menu
    • logo (including optional ie PNG fix for transparent backgrounds)
    • logotext
    • slogan
    • mission

    Tested to work with:

    • Internet explorer 7
    • Internet explorer 6
    • Firefox
    • Opera 9
    • Safari (Safari for windows)
    • Netscape 9

    Free Drupal Themes Wanted!

    Hi!
I'm peach, or Jurriaan, from All Drupal Themes and I'm having some trouble finding good themes to port and release to the community. I've already ported several themes but it turns out there were some problems:
-Apparently people were more interested in 3-column themes
-Some of the themes were not deemed useful at all
-Most good looking themes I find are Creative Commons licensed, which makes sense from the designers point of view, but unfortunately they are not allowed on drupal.org/project/Themes. I was reassured when I signed up for a cvs account that I must not upload CC2.5 licensed themes, only GPL.

I've created this post to communicate with the Drupal community, for whom I make the themes, and hopefully some people have good ideas for themes to be ported to drupal! If anyone has a GPL theme in mind please post it in the comments sections.

If you know of a gorgeous CC licensed design, it's also eligible for a free drupal port but I will put it up with my free drupal themes department but it won't show up on drupal.org/project/Themes.

    Looking forward to your input!
    JR

New Drupal theme! (created as part of the GHOP contest)

If you don't know what this is all about, check out the page on GHOP.

    Theme screenshot

I've created a new tableless, CSS-based XHTML theme. It's a three-column, fluid layout, pictured to your right. No, it won't disappear into white like pictured, but it's still a good theme (in my opinion). If this seems exciting to you, read on...

    Interesting review of themes

Dan Lennox did this theme analysis for me (see attached). The goal was to look for themes that could be shown to potential clients (in green). Some of the themes are not green, but this doesn't make them not good for other purposes.
