Washington, DC Drupalers

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

This group is for everyone living in the DC metro area who's interested in Drupal. You can post here about anything relating to DC and Drupal, whether that's local job postings, events, or just a call out to talk shop over beers.

You can also find us in a couple of other places:

We have a great meetup every month where we get together to connect in person. The target audience is Drupal developers, users, and people who want to learn more about Drupal. We start the meetups with a round of very focused lightning talks that discuss real world solutions to existing problems, new work people have done, and Drupal news. Some of these talks are about code, and some are not. We do ask that all presenters talk on a level that everyone - including non-developers - can follow. After the talks, we chat over beer, and maybe play a few games of foosball.

We're open to ways to improve the meetups and this group, so speak up if you have ideas!

October DC Drupal meetup will be 10/11

Start:
2010-10-11 19:00 - 21:00 UTC
Event type:
User group meeting

Only local images are allowed. Our next DC Drupal meetup will be on Monday, October 11th starting at 7:00 pm at the upstairs bar at Stetson's.

Beers will be cracked at 7:00 pm and the formal portion of the meetup will start at 7:30 pm with a discussion on Drupal 7. Topics will likely include is it ready yet, when will it be released, what's new in this releases, what changes should everyone be aware of, and what road bumps will there be for upgrading. Jeff will solicit questions from the group and ask people to share their experience to help answer them. So come ready with LOTS of questions, and for those who have worked with Drupal 7, be ready to share your experiences.

My colleagues at Development Seed will get things started by talking about their experience upgrading modules like Features, Context, Admin, and Strongarm and how it led to the creation of something new - Build Kit - that could help others working in Drupal 7.

These meetups are open to everyone with an interest in Drupal, and they're a great opportunity to learn more about the open source framework - there is usually a lot of experience in the room - and meet local developers. We have a meetup each month on the second Monday of the month at Stetsons. Hope to see you there!

Any Migration Tips re field types, patches for a Beginner Moving MySQL tables 2 Drupal?

'Morning, one and all. If anyone has time for tip or two on this, I'd LOVE it! Spent a lil' time this weekend reading Drupal

API+ sites, and I found a patch that I think will help me migrate date type fields from a MySQL table into a Drupal CCK node.

But I am having trouble synthesizing what I've read. I have the Migrate/Table Wizard/Schema modules installed. And the migration works when I exclude the non-supported field types, dates in my case. At risk of being ... inelegant, my reading took me here:

Drupal Help Needed

I am the Chief Information Office for the Virginia German Shepherd Rescue. We are trying to move our web site from a MS based web host to a Linux based one.

I am hoping to use a combination of mostly Drupal and a few other Open Source packages to build the site.

My PHP programmer (who originally going to write the site from scratch) has just bailed on me.

We desperately need to get the site up and running in about a month.
I am looking for some one who can alter themes to match the theme we have created and help with the set up. We will also need about 6 forms created.

UPDATE: This talk is now postponed until (hopefully) next month since Frank can't make it
Frank Febbraro from Phase2 Technology will talk about improving performance in Drupal with CDNs and run through how his team implements these features on sites they have developed including WhiteHouse.gov and others.

Dan Reif from Blackmesh will talk about how to configure Drupal for ultimate performance, highlighting common configuration mistakes and solutions.

We'll start the formal part of the meetup at 7:30 pm with a round of quick introductions, and then will go into the lightning talks above. After the lightning talks, there will be time to talk to the presenters in more detail if you're interested, and for chatting over beers.

These meetups are a great opportunity to learn about Drupal, find out more about some of the cool things local developers are working on, and get to know people using and working with Drupal in Washington, DC. We have a meetup each month on the second Monday of the month at Stetsons. Hope to see you there!

Drupal vs. Joomla - Why not both?

Ok, I am not a developer BUT I have a question. I have an opening (posted under Jobs here on Groups.Drupal.org by NewMediaHire if you want to see what I am talking about) for someone with both BUT here is the issue, I have not seen one resume with both on there SOOOOOOOOOOOO I had to ask the one person I know who loves Drupal. He tells me that developers are either one or the other and they are not used together.

Next Drupal Meetup will be August 9 at 7:00 pm

Start:
2010-08-09 19:00 - 21:00 UTC
Event type:
User group meeting

Only local images are allowed. The August Washington, DC Drupal meetup will be this Monday, August 9, starting at 7:00 pm at Stetson's. This meetup will focus on conversations and networking and be more like a Drupal happy hour than our usual format of short presentations.

We'll start with a round of introductions at 7:30 pm so we can all meet each other, and please come ready to share a few topics you'd like to chat about with others. We'll still open up the floor to anyone who would like to give a quick five minute lightning talk, but we will not have any planned presentations. Most of the time will go to talking casually with people with shared interests.

This month's meetup in particular will be a great opportunity to meet local Drupal developers and talk with them about specific topics you'd like to know more about, for example aggregation, Drush, site building, or Drupal 7. Hope to see you there!

The DC Drupal meetup takes place the second Monday of each month at Stetsons.

Mac SW versus PC SW

This is a message to all you Drupalers that are on a Mac. We are in need of a new computer at my house. Do I go with another PC or a Mac? If I go Mac, I have to run Parallels so that I can flip back and forth between windows and mac to accommodate the Adobe SW in which I have a lot of money invested. So this begs the question, what SW out on a Mac that I can't get on a PC? What Mac only SW do you use as Drupalers? Is the switch worth it (processing power aside)?

thanks
