Washington, DC Drupalers

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

This group is for everyone living in the DC metro area who's interested in Drupal. You can post here about anything relating to DC and Drupal, whether that's local job postings, events, or just a call out to talk shop over beers.

You can also find us in a couple of other places:

We have a great meetup every month where we get together to connect in person. The target audience is Drupal developers, users, and people who want to learn more about Drupal. We start the meetups with a round of very focused lightning talks that discuss real world solutions to existing problems, new work people have done, and Drupal news. Some of these talks are about code, and some are not. We do ask that all presenters talk on a level that everyone - including non-developers - can follow. After the talks, we chat over beer, and maybe play a few games of foosball.

We're open to ways to improve the meetups and this group, so speak up if you have ideas!

September Drupal Meetup on Monday, 9/14

Start:
2009-09-14 19:00 - 21:00 UTC
Event type:
User group meeting

Only local images are allowed. The September Drupal meetup will take place this coming Monday (9/14) at 7:00 pm at Stetson's Bar and Grill. As usual, we'll meet at the upstairs bar at 7:00 pm and officially kick things off at 7:30 pm with introductions and a round of five minute lightning talks. These talks are your opportunity to take the floor to talk about the latest Drupal module you're building, show off a site that you built, or talk about anything else Drupal related - and learn from everyone else, of course. So far, we have two lightning talks on the schedule:

  • Matt Tucker, in town from Colorado, will talk about building a feature server to easily share features (like a blog, resource library, etc.) in Drupal. He built one for PingVision and wrote about it here.

  • News from DrupalCon Paris - we'll rope some people who attended the conference into talking about the highlights from it.

If you'd like to present, post about it in the comments or just speak up at the meetup. You'll have access to a flat screen if you want to show something off, but the internet connection is shaky so come prepared to present offline.

Hope to see you there!

New Drupal Book : Drupal 6 Site Blueprints

<

blockquote>Bad news is always good news for the press. And so Vaughan Pyre has decided to take advantage of this and create a web site that will aggregate bad news and weird happenings from all over the world. The content of the site will be entirely derived from RSS feeds from several sources; each feed being automatically fetched and its items displayed as individual articles on the web site. Vaughan's intention is to create a lot of self-updating web sites which he intends to populate with Google ads for site users to click and click so that he can make a lot of money.

DrupalCon DC inspires new unconference, we'd love your support

Hi there DC (and NoVA) Drupalers!

Back in March at Drupalcon -- there were at least a couple of BoF's where public media folks got together to talk about open source's place in public and civic media. There were representatives in those BoF's from PBS, NPR, Universities, and some local PBS/NPR stations.

August Drupal Meetup on Monday, 8/10

Start:
2009-08-10 19:00 - 21:00 UTC
Event type:
User group meeting

Only local images are allowed. The August DC Drupal meetup will take place on Monday, August 10th at 7:00 pm at Stetson's. We'll get things going officially around 7:30, starting with a round of introductions so we can all get to know each other, followed by a round of 5 minute lightning talks.

Lightning talks are your chance to discuss a Drupal module, ask a question you have about Drupal to the group, show off a new site that you built, or talk about anything else Drupal related. The only rules are that you have to keep it short - 5 minutes or less - and keep it so that everyone can follow along no matter how often they code with Drupal. If you'd like to give a talk, post it in the comments and/or speak up at the meetup.

Don't be shy if you're just starting or thinking about starting with Drupal. The meetups are a great way to learn and meet people who've been in your place before.

Hope to see you there!

Accordion Blocks module released for Drupal

Folks, we're happy to roll out yet another module for Drupal. It's called “Accordion Blocks”. As the name says, this module provides an accordion effect to all your blocks. You can also apply jQuery UI themes through the configuration settings of the module.

This block is for those of you who deploy apps with a lot of blocks on either side bars, and are looking for newer usability enhancements with regards to visibility of the blocks. It not only minimizes all blocks on a Drupal page, but provides a cool accordion effect to help your user to concentrate on a single block at a time.

June Drupal Meetup: Monday June 8 at Stetson's

Start:
2009-06-08 19:00 - 21:00 America/New_York
Event type:
User group meeting

Only local images are allowed.Get your 3D glasses ready... We'll be meeting in 3D (yes, I mean in person) next Monday, June 8th at Stetson's. We'll meet at the upstairs bar around 7:00 pm, and will get started with introductions followed by a round of five minute lightening presentations at 7:30 pm.

So far, a few people have volunteered to lead lightning talks.

  • Adrian Rossouw, in town from South Africa, will talk about Aegir, a set of modules that helps you easily deploy and maintain many Drupal sites. He'll talk about what you can do with Aegir, where the project is, and where it's going.

The floor is open for anyone to give a five minute lightening talk, so if you'd like to talk about something you're working on in Drupal - like a module, a new website/tool, a question you have, etc. - post your topic in the comments and come ready to talk.

DC Drupal meetups are for people of all skills/knowledge levels, and all levels of presentations are welcome. Don't be shy if you're just starting or thinking about starting with Drupal - the meetups are a great way to learn and meet people who've been in your shoes before.
