This group is for everyone living in the DC metro area who's interested in Drupal. You can post here about anything relating to DC and Drupal, whether that's local job postings, events, or just a call out to talk shop over beers.
You can also find us in a couple of other places:
- Group on Meetup.com for events (they handle events better, with reminder emails and whatnot)
- Group on groups.drupal.org for discussions and job posts (that's here)
- #drupal-dc on freenode
- @DrupalDC on Twitter
We have a great meetup every month where we get together to connect in person. The target audience is Drupal developers, users, and people who want to learn more about Drupal. We start the meetups with a round of very focused lightning talks that discuss real world solutions to existing problems, new work people have done, and Drupal news. Some of these talks are about code, and some are not. We do ask that all presenters talk on a level that everyone - including non-developers - can follow. After the talks, we chat over beer, and maybe play a few games of foosball.
We're open to ways to improve the meetups and this group, so speak up if you have ideas!
Drupal Design Camp needs newbie sessions too. Good opp for developers to mix in.
Hi Local Groups,
We are getting great design-related sessions submitted but there's a need for basic Drupal sessions so newbies know what the heck we are talking about. Like intro to Drupal, CCK, views, terminology, ect. Remember when we started out? That kind of stuff.

Thanks for your help!

Stumped by styling
I'm putting together a Drupal site, the focus of which is an approach to K-12 education. There are numberous digital photos in it that need to be wrapped, but I'm unable to do that sort of thing very well. If anyone can help me with such matters, I'd appreciate it. I'm thinking that the site should have some sort of blog as well, but of course know nothing in that arena either.

The next Washington, DC Drupal meetup will be on Monday, May 10 at 7:00 pm, and it will be an exciting one focused on open data. Last week the World Bank launched a huge open data initiative by opening up its massive database of 2,000+ data indicators on human development around the world and made much of the data available on Data.WorldBank.org - a Drupal site. At this meetup, we'll have three short presentations on the site and the components and work that made it possible:
Jeff McCoy from the World Bank will talk about why the World Bank opened up this data, their goals with Data.WorldBank.org, and why they decided to build the site on Drupal, and Livia Barton, also from the World Bank, will share some stats from the site.
Frank Febbraro from Phase 2 Technology will talk about the World Bank's API that lets people access and interact with the data and why it's built as it is.
Alex Barth from Development Seedwill walk through Data.WorldBank.org, explain how it works, and talk about some of the modules powering it.
UPDATE: We'll have at least one other talk on open data:
Peter Corbett from iStrategy Labs will share details on what the European Union efforts to open up their government data and will also talk about Digital Capital Week, a 10-day technology festival coming to DC this June.
We'll also ask people who attended DrupalCon San Francisco last week to share their biggest take aways, so if you were one of the lucky ones who attended think about what you can share with the group.
Drupal meetups are open to everyone and are a great way to get to learn more about Drupal, meet the local community, and in this case hear about how a large organization is opening up their data and using open source software to do so.

Resources on using Drupal for nonprofit/membership sites
I'm looking for resources to help with Drupal applications for membership/nonprofits' websites. Specific needs are for dues payments, accepting donations of any amount, course and event registrations.
I'm pretty good with front-end development and administration - can follow and create documentation that's pretty user-friendly, not too technical. But I need help with the back-end part, or to be pointed to good documentation about how to set it up.
You can see our site at www.e-kehila.com. We have used Ubercart in the past but it is not activated right now.

moving to town...
I am moving up to Baltimore/DC from Miami, last week of March, and I thought I would do some networking. My think is Drupal and iPhone development, and if anyone wants to drop me a line, perhaps hook up or give me a heads I would be all ears. Specifically, I am in DC 29th and 30th ( including a wine tasting if anyone is into that).

MD Drupal For Good - Building a free non-profit site
During the past several Maryland Drupal meetups, I've mentioned building a simple Drupal site during an event in order to go into detail regarding building a site as well as troubleshooting issues that come up during development. Sean Powell (esdott) brought this up during this meetup and sparked interest regarding this. It then occurred to me that instead of building a simple useless site, we should take our energy and build for a worthwhile cause and learn.

Our Introduction to Module Development class provides a hands-on crash course in solving specific problems by building custom modules. This training focuses on how to approach a specific problem that existing modules simply do not solve. Students follow along in individual development sandboxes as we guide them through putting Drupal's APIs to work. Attendees will leave the class with a working knowledge of Drupal's menu, form and hook systems as well as the database layer.
