Multisite

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
This group should probably have more organizers. See documentation on this recommendation.

Hello and welcome.

I'm running several sites using Drupal's multisite feature, and noticed the absence of a group to discuss the various issues and how-tos related to doing this. If anyone has any questions about the basics, I can probably answer them. I'd also like to see some tutorials about more advanced stuff like sharing database tables.

Multi-site install

I am trying to make a multi-site install on a local desktop for testing. The first site install went smoothly. But now when adding another site or sub site to the system and following the instruction in documentation, when I point the browser to the new site it shows an index page, when I hit install.php page goes white (Fire Fox) Opra sayes page not available.

Does anyone know how to start the install process on the 2nd site?

Advise needed follow-up

I am trying to setup an educational network. I have read much
of the documentation and now am more confused then when I first
began. So I would like any advise or opinions related to the best
approach to take.
Here is the basic scenario, the students that generally utilize this
product are adults, but it is not limited to adults;
1. General access - this section acts as main page that leads to
general information, such as benefits and what is needed to learn, etc. This section is accessible to the general public. It will offer anonymous visitors the opportunity to become members. They may join as;

Did I do this right?

I'm a Drupal noob and have fumbled my way through a multi-site installation. All in all, it went pretty well with no major problems that I could not find a solution to - thanks in no small part to a lot of videos and other tutorials out there. Of course, I'm not sure that what I did was exactly correct, but it seems to work. I would appreciate people more knowledgeable than I reviewing the following and giving me their opinions. Also, there is a small problem mentioned at the end that I would like to be able to fix. First, though, allow me to apologize for any typos.

Advise needed

I am working on an educational network and am searching for the best route to take. I have much of the documentation and now more confused than when I first begain. I am not sure if I need a multisite setup or a domain access or an organic module setup. if I need a sigle data base or several. Is there somewhere that can help determine this?

First multisite setup: Is this possible?

Hi all

I'm trying to set up my first multisite, but I'm uncertain how to solve some problems:

I want an external site (on foobar.com) with news, pages etc. It should only be editable by admins.
I want an internal site (on internal.foobar.com) with a forum, event calendar etc, and access control. Most of the content here will be created by normal users.

I also want the external site to fetch events accepted by its admins from the internal site, and the internal site to fetch news from the external page and use them as forum threads.

Trying To Get A Multisite Setup Off the Ground

I hate to ask another question regarding this topic, but my newbie-ness has prevented me from applying similar situations to mine. I'm not sure which path I should be taking, so I am hoping I can get some clarification as to which option(s) are viable for me. In short, I am trying to determine the best way to setup a network of blogs on subdomains with my present hosting environment. I've outlined my situation below, followed by my specific questions. Thanks in advance for your help.

Advice on my first Multisite

Hi,
I'm glad to find this group - I'd love some advice on my first multisite installation please.

Here are the specs:
*English-only
*3 country sites; I'm thinking of using subdomains for them, but what's your experience on needing .au for Australia, for example?
*some common and some country-specific content
*no logged-in-only services/content is expected at this time
*pretty small content footprint

I'm trying to ballpark the site development, and wondered:

Remote authentication system

Hello everyone,

For a while I've been developing a system which allows a Drupal website to act as an authentication server and allow client websites to be connected to it. Once you register an account on one of the websites in the network you can use those credentials to gain access to any other website there.

I am writing this post because:
- We (Adulmec) are going to open source it so it makes sense to see if what we've done is of interest to you.
- I am not sure that some of our decisions are right and there might be better approaches which I did not see.

Multisite with Drupal 6.13 on Lighttpd 1.4.9

I am currently running a multisite installation with Drupal 6.13 on Lighttpd 1.4.19 and facing issues when creating Drupal sites in subdirectories.
After reading through countles posts here on the drupal sites, as well on lighttpd I am close to converting back to Apache as I can't get this to work.
The drupal directory structure looks like this

Drupal root: /home/www/drupal/sites

+sites
|______all
|______default
|______domain.com
|______blogs.domain.com
|______blogs.domain.com.blog1
|______blogs.domain.com.blog2

Multisite using different urls AND subdomains

Goodmorning. We have some problems getting multisite to run on different urls. By different urls I mean

domain.com/city/project1
domain.com/city/project4
domain.com/anothercity/project2
domain.com/yetanothercity/project3

It's a single codebase, single database multisite install. Is it possible to do this? If so, what different configuration's do we need to think of?

I've suggested creating the different folders like
domain.com.cityname.projectname
etc

A critical look at the implementation of Plugin Manager - Underlying issues and possible solutions

I have been harboring some growing concerns about the direction of the plugin manager integration proposals for Drupal core almost since their inception, but have not been able to make an informed opinion on the subject until I had properly reviewed the proposed system on a much deeper scale.

While my impressions of the project and the current implementation are fairly negative, I have aimed to frame my criticisms in a positive constructive manner because I believe that the goals of the project are worthwhile, and that for a large section of users this could be a very flexible and usable solution.

Unfortunately a lot of my concerns have been well founded, and I believe that the implementation of this system needs to be taken in a different direction for it to be able to succeed in its goals, while not negatively affecting projects like Aegir, Open Atrium and many other ‘serious developers’.

Sharing user data

Is it reasonable to have a user profile managed in a DB at the mutlisite root level which can also be shared with a child. The child sites would aslo have their own DB to manage user data unique to the child context. If this is reasonable what does the DB configrauation look like and how is the parent DB accessed from a child site?

Thanks in advance for your help

Multisite or Access Control Model?

I'm currently doing a proof of concept for Drupal as our Enterprise wide CMS. Our current site is http://www.cdha.nshealth.ca/. The current site is in a complete mess, and lacks and any decent functionality. We currently have 160+ sections on this site with approximately 200 contributors managing their own content.

Multisite issue, sites are stuck on the front page

Hi,
I have one installation of Drupal running 3 sites. Things were working well, and then I updated to Drupal 6.13. My sites now come up, but only show the front page. When I click the links or try to log in the url changes but the content doesn't.

The host is A2 hosting and I'm using a cpanel. The sites are in the sites folder, they have their own folders named the same as the domain. They each have their own database and I have updated the settings file to user and database information.

Any ideas about how I can fix this?
Thank you!

Multisite: shared users, some content shared, ...

- Multisite: a main site (mainsite.com) and many subsites (sub1.mainsite.com, sub2.mainsite.com, ...)
- All sites use one core Drupal
- Single sign on, user can sign in every sites to use resources (i'm want to use LDAP to manage users)
- Shared vocabulary and terms
- There are some contents appears all sites (but they can be only posted once)
- Using one or more database
- user's permission is different from sites

Should I share permissions?

Hello guys.

I will build 2 sites and I will use miltisite for this project. They are pretty much the same, they will use the same theme too. The only difference is that one of them will have BR language content and the other will have ENG language content. Each of them will have its own domain, so they need to be 2 different sites.

I've already decided to share user and session tables among them, so that anybody can register on any of them and once logged on one be logged on the other too.

Multisite Decision Flowchart

There is much confusion about when to use what "multisite" technique. Sometimes Organic Groups is a better solution that full blown sites, other times there are complex shared database tables in mind. This page is meant to help people make decisions about what Drupal "multisite" solution is best for them.

The best way to show this will be with an actual, graphical flow chart. Let's start by listing out some questions and answers, plus pros, cons, or gotchas with various modules.

Multisite with lots of shared, but specific data?

I need a stack of sites based on different sports with their own distinct URLs, but with shared codebase... some multisites sounds ideal. For example:

snowboard.blah.com
ski.blah.com
surf.blah.com

I'm after a little bit of advice on the best way to share data and probably more specifically on how to filter data. I've been trudging up the Drupal learning curve for a few months and have played with a test site, read and watched heaps, but I'm still a newbie (so use small words).
