NetBeans and Subversion

Tonight at the Northern NJ Drupal meetup in Panera, Robbie had mentioned Netbeans. Subversion also came up during the discussion.

Future dates for Central NJ meet-ups - feedback please

Last night we had a good discussion including three people who were attending for the first time. However, overall it seems like fewer people have attended the last two meet-ups which we held on Thursday rather than Tuesday.

For December we discussed trying it on the 1st Wednesday (December 2nd).

UPDATE: To all of you who have requested an invitation from me, I want you to know that I have forwarded your invite request to Google. Remember to send me your FULL name with email addy (private or public, I don't care). By the way, I still have a couple of invites, but they're going pretty fast. Let me know if you're up for surfing.

Federation Protocol -- it ain't just Google servers anymore

Google Wave has been generating a lot of excitement among Drupal developers and there are very good reasons for this. Back in July 2009 or so a handful of Drupalistas, including myself, were privileged to play in Google's Wave Developer Sandbox. In early October 2009, a public preview server was opened to allow many more developers an opportunity to kick the tires on this new vehicle of communication. Most people checked it out for maybe an hour or so, liked what they saw and then moved on to other business.

For those coming by car, park in Lot A. There should be plenty of parking in the evening.

Central NJ Drupal meetup October 8

Start:
2009-10-08 19:00 - 21:00 America/New_York
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

The October 2009 Central New Jersey Drupal meet-up will be held on the campus of Princeton University. While we will be open to discussing all Drupal-related topics, we'll have a focus for this time on using revision control software. We will discuss using CVS to get or deploy Drupal core or contributed modules from Drupal.org. In addition we will discuss the use of subversion (svn) as a tool for managing your own custom code and for deploying custom code or the Acquia Drupal distribution.

We will mostly use the command-line tools, but also take a quick look at using them via an IDE like NetBeans. We'll try to make this hands on, so it will be useful to have these programs installed on your computer or a remote computer you can access.

The meet-up is being co-sponsored by the "Princeton Unix Users' Group" (an undergraduate student group).

We will meet in the Rockefeller residential college classroom (in Madison hall), which is near the corner of Nassau St. (route 27) and University Place in downtown Princeton. The classroom is reached by going through the Holder Hall courtyard to the entrance that leads to the Rockefeller College common room and dining hall. The exterior of this door is labeled "Rockefeller College Office". Immediately inside this door are stairs leading up to the classroom above.

2009-09-23 19:00 - 22:15 America/New_York

Coming out of the last meetup, we were discussing lots of day-to-day maintenance and I always push version control, even if it is just you as the developer or themer. I talked a little about how simple it is, and I realized that I need to do a little show & tell. So this month I am going to do Robbie's Practical Version Control for Drupal - How to use Subversion with CVS to make your life easier :)

As always there will be Q & A and show & tell. Please bring questions, problems and examples.

The back room was great, large space lots of outlets & tables.

Types of information objects

There are at least two basic types of information objects. One is organic and the other idealistic. By organic I mean a composite of attributes that reflect nature's use of ordered and encoded DNA information to drive organic living and organic growth processes. It is no accident that trees, branches and leaves are so often used to describe ordered relationships. By idealistic, I mean a throwback to the Platonic concept of a pure object that exists in form but is never actualized in practice.

How to add a Google Wave to a local Drupal website

1. Create a google wave after you have accessed your sandbox.

2. While the google wave is active, select Debug>Get current Wave ID.

3. A small window should pop up, displaying a Wave ID. Copy the value that is displayed to your clipboard. You'll have to highlight the value before a copy command becomes available.

4. Create a new content type in a fresh Drupal installation and call it "Google Wave". The machine name can be googlewave. Put in whatever description you like.

5. At Home > Create content in the local Drupal website, select the new content type "Google Wave".

Google Wave Drupal mashup module testing

I am at liberty to dispense access to Google Wave Developer's Sandbox to one developer for the purpose of collaborative testing. I prefer to provide this access to someone who is not contractually bound to any employer to create code for the sole benefit of the employer. I will be at the Northern NJ Drupal Group meeting in Ramsey this Thursday evening. If interested in this sandbox access and collaborative testing, please discuss your interest with me at this meeting.
