Drupal Design Camp LA 2011 status update

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

It was pointed out to me today that there isn't enough promotion going on for the upcoming Drupal Design Camp LA conference, so I wanted to post a status update. In case you haven't heard, we're having a design-oriented DrupalCamp in the spirit of Design for Drupal and the Drupal Design Camp conferences in Boston, the Bay Area and Prague. It's coming up on February 5-6th. There will also be a full day of Drupal training the day beforehand on February 4th.

For more information about Design for Drupal and Drupal Design Camp LA, see the official announcement at http://groups.drupal.org/node/96799 and, in particular, the "What's Design for Drupal?" section in that post.

There isn't a website for the conference yet, but I'd like to get one up in the next week or two at http://ddcla.org/2011 for all the registration, sponsorship and hotel information, details about the training, and so on. I'm happy to host a website sprint at my new digs. Don't worry, I'm not in the boonies anymore (10 months in Malibu was enough for me) and my place is easily accessible.

Meanwhile, my goal as one of the conference organizers is to do everything I can to make this conference easy and fun to organize, and I really want to keep time investments relatively low. I'm thinking that we can put this together with no more than a dozen hours of pre-conference planning from each volunteer. This isn't a lot (at least compared to DrupalCamp LA, which took hundreds of hours to organize) and it's much more in line with other DrupalCamps around the world.

Things we need volunteers for

There are things to do during the conference itself such as A/V setup, working the registration table, setting up tables and chairs, keeping an eye on trash duty, and so on. It's too early to assign names to these things, but there's also some pre-conference planning to do, such as finding sponsors, building the website, printing signs and session schedules, and doing general promotion. Would anyone like to help in one or more of these areas?

We've done this before at DrupalCamp LA and I have no doubt we can do it again.

How to get involved

One way to get involved is by letting any of the organizers know that you'd like to help. Los Angeles now has 3 regular Drupal meetings a month (up from just 1 a month earlier this year) on the Westside, in Downtown Los Angeles, and in Pasadena, so finding an organizer is easy!

Not everyone in uses just the groups.drupal.org website and not everyone just uses email, so we're going to try using both and use the ladrupal-organizing mailing list and occasionally post updates to the groups.drupal.org/la site. The mailing list is open to everyone and volunteers are welcome to sign up. Instructions for that are at http://groups.drupal.org/node/96824

Many thanks to everyone who has already stepped forward for this at the last two Drupal meetups! If you're not already on the list and would like to be, check out http://groups.drupal.org/node/96824 or leave a comment below.

First up, the Drupal Design Camp LA website. I'll post a followup soon after I schedule the website sprint. I'm currently looking at Saturday, December 11th.
