I have an open source friend who is considering making the jump to Drupal. He has a couple of questions I cannot answer. I have done some of these things in D7, but have not really stressed the system. If this looks like an interesting project for a newcomer to practice on please chime in. I wish I had the time.

Can Drupal manage mailing lists itself without needing a separate mailman/group whatever interface? In particular, how much custom code would it take to assign privileges to allow arbitrary user(s) to manage individual mailing lists? I want the cruise chair to be able to manage a mailing list for cruising opportunities and such, for example.
(Matt) Is OG the best solution for multiple mailing lists/forums? -
How hard is it to plug custom code into Drupal? The one thing that works well on their site is the most important thing, the reservation system, and there would have to be a replacement that is as good or better than what they have. I fear that would require custom code (if we're very lucky, maybe we could re-use much of what they have).

I'm pretty sure it's easy to set up blogs for any user that needs one?
(Matt) This again is fairly straightforward, but I have not tried multiple users in D7 yet, does anyone have experience with this? -
I assume it is easy to have multiple calendars edited by different users?
(Matt) The calendar module is trivial to set up, but has anyone tried it with multiple users yet?
