Could someone please take over the Austin group as its official "Manager"?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Hello my fellow Austinites & a Happy New Year to you!

I'm currently the "Manager" of the Austin group but, like all good things, the gig is over & it's time to hand it over to someone else.

So...

Is anyone interested in taking over the Austin group as its official "Manager"? Please let me know by posting a reply here.

Thank you!
Walt

Austin Group Manager

Walt Esquivel's picture

Hi danorton,

Thanks for your interest.

The Austin Group Manager basically answers any questions members may have but the biggest responsibility is trying to ensure we have periodic meetups.

Lauren Roth had done a great job of finding a location and having speakers so we've lost a truly gifted & dedicated person that was putting Austin meetups together now that she's moved to San Francisco just this past week.

Anyone that's part of the Austin group can be its manager and anyone can put meetups together, but it helps to have a manager that can perhaps lead in some way to make the meetups happen. I took on that responsibility a while back & put together quite a number of meetups, but surely out of the current 243 Austin members, there are others with the desire to take over as group manager. Could that be you? :)

Thanks again for your interest.

Best,
Walt

Hey Walt

GreenSpiderDesign's picture

I started the Meetup.com group before handing it over to Lauren. I'm sorry to hear that she has gone - I didn't even realize she was leaving.

I'd be more than willing to take over the group again and working with you to maximize its usefulness to the Austin Drupal community.

If you're interested in having me step back into this role please contact me.

Thanks,
Terry

How about Chana?

GreenSpiderDesign's picture

I know she had taken an assistant role to Lauren.

Hi all (and Walt)...:-D

cbear42's picture

Lauren and I had talked about actually trying something in addition to the group that meets downtown. While that is an awesome group(!) - the topics have often been WAY over the newbie's heads who have attended it according to the feedback I've gotten. Also, I have had several requests to start a Meetup/Drupal group further north. Many of my students have said they would love to come to Meetups, but they live north - and definitely don't want to have to drive 15 miles in the opposite direction of home - and deal with UT parking on top of it.

So, I HAD been thinking of starting a North Drupal User Group/Meetup Group...and holding it on different days than the downtown group. As someone also pointed out - it gives them a second opportunity to attend a Drupal educational event - if they can't make a particular meeting one week.

I am happy to do whatever I can on EITHER front, however....just let me know! :-D

ideas for possible locations

paul_thomas's picture

Hello all,

I agree with Chana's comments. I live up north and found it difficult to attend the meetings at the UT location due to finding parking on the UT campus. When the Drupal meetings were at the library in Easy Austin, I found the situation much much better then.

If you do decide to have a Drupal North location, maybe some of the following locations might be available:
- TechRanch Austin (near Metric and Rundberg)
- Microsoft building (at the tech triangle area by Dave and Busters. This is where the Agile meetings are held)
- Freescale campus on Parmer (the DITA-XML User Group meets there)
- BMC campus on Morada (near Jollyville and Braker)
- or maybe even at the Triangle at 45th street area

just my 2 cents

thanks,
Paul

Drupal meetup venue and upcoming plans

KerryLarose's picture

Hey guys,

Lauren Roth spoke to Chad/myself as well as Elizabeth Quintanilla before leaving about managing the meetup group. We've held off on making any announcements or setting up any new venues until after the holidays.

We are currently working on a securing a better venue (that will have available parking and a more accessible location!) at this time. Assuming things work out, we'll announce the planned venue, solicit some feedback, and secure the location. We'll let you guys know as soon as we get an OK.

We definitely appreciate suggestions for venues in the meantime.

A few other things we are considering at this time are meetup times and the schedule. Right now we shoot for the third Wednesday of the month with a rotating schedule of Development, Theming, and Business-focused talks. One of the challenges we are seeing is that people who are focused on one of those 3 categories will often only feel the need to attend once every 3 months - which fragments the group and hurts overall membership and attendance.

We're looking into ways to expand the topics covered at any individual meetup - as well as advertising the content better - so people are more likely to find information that pertains to their needs.

Other stuff is in the works, but for now this is what we're looking to start pushing for with the new year.

TechRanch Austin

cbear42's picture

Yes, I actually was on the phone with Kevin from Tech Ranch this evening - and I'm certain that we could work some space and time out. As to folks coming from way south - I completely get it. The time
would have to be adjusted/played with a bit to come up with an optimal time...

I would like to emphasize here, as well, that my intention is not to "split" the community or in any way detract from the downtown group - only to offer another option at a slightly different
level - in the interest of spreading Drupal goodness, light and joy.

:-D

Staying centralized

KerryLarose's picture

I love the idea of TechRanch as a venue, but I really would prefer keeping it as close to Central Austin as possible without being in the midst of downtown.

We were looking at something more centralized like, for example, Conjuncture for a meetup location. If we can get a venue like that locked down, would people be interested?

Re: splitting the community

KerryLarose's picture

Another issue I want to bring up involves splitting the group - the Austin Drupal meetup group, while it has a nice stable group of contributors, can't really afford to be split any more. As it is right now, we could use a boost in membership and I would be worried about providing alternate venues that might seem to be competing with each other.

What we're really hoping to do and what I think the Austin Drupal community really needs to stay strong:

-Centralized venue with better parking/presentation space
-Better appeals to multiple demographics of Drupal users (instead of having to wait 3 months for a topic of interest)
-Better advertisement of the group/stronger call to action for Drupal developers, freelancers, and businesses to attend
-Work on more large functions that pull in people from outside the immediate community (for example, things like Drupal Camp Austin)

re: splitting the community ??

paul_thomas's picture

Greetings,

I agree with people's concerns about the possibility of splitting the community, however, aren't we at the point in our technology evolution (as a hi-tech city and as a community of web developers) where we should be looking at how to build a better virtual community where we can collaborate more effectively without having to be physically present at every meeting?

Maybe we can have two meetings per month, one north-ish and one south-ish, but then make sure we record the proceedings and make them available for other members who could not attend. Also, use web conferencing tools to broadcast the live meetings. I am sure that there enough of us in the area that could help volunteer our time or our company's time :-) to help coordinate the technology logistics.

While I found being physically present at the meetings to be the most beneficial for me, I can not always attend them. Also, we had such a great Drupal Camp Austin event this Fall, and I still can not find the all videos for the presentations.

thank you,
paul

two groups

arkiii's picture

Hi Paul,

I agree with your observations. Two meetings one north and one south would give us more opportunities and more options. Videotaping or webstreaming are options for those who can't attend and i think are great. I would be glad to volunteer to videotape and upload them for the group. I don't see us splitting the community by offering two meeting places and times but expanding it and making it more accessible for those who can't make one or the other. I like Chana's observations about subject matter for some of these meeting as they pertain to newbies..

my 2 cents,

Strength in Numbers

cbear42's picture

Hi -

I do want to address the notion that somehow we all have to show up in the same room at the same time once a month to be a strong, vibrant community.

The community isn't "split" simply by offering choices of venue, topic, date and time.

Strength in a technical community comes from meeting the needs of that community in a way that helps them to effectively grow with the tools they are using.
Larger gatherings can be great places to network, hear new speakers, etc...and something like Drupal Camp Austin does that sort of thing brilliantly.
My personal belief is that offering more choices gives us a chance to grow a community that meets more needs - and that can only make us stronger overall.

Re: Conjuncture. Conjuncture is smack in the middle of downtown - and over 15 miles from where I live (which is close to the demographic center of Austin) - so it's even further
for folks who live even farther North.. I don't see that as really a big difference between going to UT - except you have to actually go even further south...So, I'm not certain what is "centralized" about it. "Centralized" - to whom?

I guess I just don't understand - since most technology companies are NOT sitting in the downtown area - and since the demographic center of Austin is well north of that
area - why we seem to be slightly fixated on it? I can tell you that the people I've spoken with have no interest in going downtown after work for a Drupal meetup.
If we're really interested in building a strong community - why don't we start listening to those folks?

Cheers,

Chana

From South to North

Charlotte-Anne's picture

Speaking on behalf of the far South Austin contingent (San Antonio), if you move the meetups far enough north that we can take the toll road bypass, it would make the drive shorter for us, because we can avoid the downtown bottleneck where y'all treat I-35 like a surface street.
We're easy ~ just keep making the content (and camaraderie) compelling enough to drive 70+ miles for!
(And vote for light rail ;-)

I am definitely all for

KerryLarose's picture

I am definitely all for providing more events and special venues for growing the community, and I am definitely not opposed to a different locale. I just want to be cautious about moving the overall venue too far north to meet the needs of the business community when a large percentage of the active participants in the Drupal group are freelancers or individuals and while people who ARE positioned far south may have trouble attending at all.

I do like idea of possibly having a more newbie-focused meetup, as it would help focus the overall content a bit better. Maybe having a separate and more beginner-friendly meeting in a different location would be a good step.

I think we're actually on the same page here...

cbear42's picture

We're both very interested in growing the Drupal community - and while there may be 1,000 would-be attendees in Georgetown - I don't think I would go that far, either. There just needs to be a happy
balance on the location(s) issue. And, I'm sure we can find it... :-)...

As far as a more new-user-focused Drupal Meetup goes, I think it could help folks, who might otherwise become discouraged, to know there is another option. Equally, people who come to
the "new guys" gathering and are bored out of their skulls - could be happily pointed in the other group's direction. I think it would work as long as we don't have meetings on days that
conflict with each other - and at times that are "user friendly". Both groups working together can actually help promote both the other group, their topics, and the Drupal community
as a whole.

Um, at least that's my current theory.....

stefanwray's picture

channelAustin has a conference room that holds 15 and a studio that can hold 30 to 35 comfortably.

channelAustin is east of !-35 with decent parking.

I had talked to Lauren about the January meetup being a focus on nonprofits involved with Drupal and had put together 3 nonprofits to do presentations, but it hadn't been scheduled.

I agree with an earlier comment that people engaged in Drupal in Austin are spread out all over town.

Two meetings a month?

Would newbies be willing to drive further for such a wonderful meeting? I would! Could we have such depth energy and perspective at two meetings a month? Moderators?

I think so ... there we go,

Austin Drupal Users Group "Manager"

Walt Esquivel's picture

Hi friends!

It's great to see so much interest in the Austin Drupal Users Group (Austin DUG) & thanks to everyone for all the great comments!

I have removed Lauren as a "group admin" for the Austin DUG since she's no longer here in Texas. Sorry to see Lauren go but our loss is California's gain! Because Elizabeth & Kerry are co-organizers of the Meetup.com Drupal group, I made them "group admins" for the Austin DUG as well. For those who don't know, here's a link to the Meetup.com group they co-organize:

http://www.meetup.com/The-Austin-Drupal-Meetup-Group/

As to the Austin DUG "manager" here at groups.drupal.org (the reason I started this thread in the first place), I see Daniel Norton & Terry Brown have expressed an interest in taking charge and at the same time I think it would be wise to consider from among a few folks who are organizing the Meetup.com group, Elizabeth Quintanilla & Kerry LaRose.

Basically, I'd like to hand it off to one of the four people mentioned above. Anyone else interested in taking over as "manager"? If not, could Daniel, Terry, Elizabeth, & Kerry decide amongst themselves & let me know? Although groups.drupal.org allows many "group admins", it only allows one person to be a "group manager".

I'll wait about a week from today before taking further action just to give folks some time to think things over & respond. I'd also like to emphasize that regardless of any "organizer", "admin", and/or "manager" title, ANYONE can help lead the Austin DUG. If you'd like to help, step up & state how it is you'd like to help. Your fellow members will be very appreciative.

Thanks!
Walt

I am happy to be either the group manager or group admin. However, I would nominate Kerry as Group Manager since I am Group Manager of the Meetup and it is good to share the Group Manager role and I would be happy just being a group admin.

Elizabeth

Walt Esquivel's picture

Hi friends,

In response to some of the comments above, I do want to say that Chana & Paul Thomas make excellent points about both the distance to UT and East Austin from North Austin as well as the knowledge level at the Meetups. I for one have at times avoided Meetups at both UT & the East Austin library on Cesar Chavez simply because of the distance from where I spend my time in North Austin (I'm near North Lamar in-between Braker Lane & Parmer Lane). Trying to get to UT or East Austin during rush hour is not anything I wish upon anyone, & evening rush hour in Austin seems to be from 4:30-7 pm these days! I have also avoided Meetups when I knew the material would be way over my head.

While it's commendable to try & work out a way for different knowledge levels to be accommodated at a Meetup taking place at a centralized location on a specific day & time, I don't think that we should put constraints on anyone that wants to try & have "something in addition to the group that meets downtown". BTW, I lump the following into the "downtown" category: UT, East Austin library on Cesar Chavez, and Conjunctured on 7th E. St.

As some of you know, traffic congestion in Austin only gets worse over time & if someone wants to have meetings in North Austin (or South Austin or wherever) for folks who are just learning about Drupal, I don't see any reason why we should stifle that intent by insisting on "centralized" Meetups. I don't see having alternate meetings as necessarily "competing" with each other but rather "complementing" each other. Over time & as Drupal users gain experience & knowledge, their interests will probably change in terms of the content they want to hear about at a Meetup, and they can then adjust their schedule however they desire.

In a nutshell, I believe in more decentralized control & letting different people run with their ideas to see what works & what doesn't. Like Chana wrote, I believe in having choices and, since Chana seems to be the one most interested in having some type of Meetup in North Austin for folks just starting out (or at a more "newbie" level), I think she should be allowed to run with it (if she still wants to). As she mentioned, however, those planning the events need to coordinate things to ensure Meetups for the different groups (1) don't take place on the same day, (2) are well publicized ahead of time, (3) give folks ample time to sign up, etc.

Also, I really like Paul's idea about web conferencing & taping for folks who (1) don't want to drive all over Austin and/or (2) can't make it to a Meetup due to conflicts. They wold then be able to watch an online recording of the Meetup. Of course, volunteers would need to tape & post the videos online. =)

Let's keep the ideas coming. It's all good!

Thanks!
Walt

North location for meetup

KerryLarose's picture

Hey Walt,

Just wanted to comment on the location discussion. There's been a lot of discussion on this issue and I think we've reached a nice compromise that might work out for the majority of people.

Last night we held the meetup in North Austin, near the Far West area, at Mangia Pizza (Mesa and Spicewood Springs). We had easy parking and access, while at the same time had dinner available for people that were commuting from farther away and were otherwise pressed for time. Barring some major objections, we're going to be holding the meetups in this location for a while, as the feedback was very positive on the location and the dinner option made it more accessible to people in general (as well as easier times parking and dealing with traffic).

The owner and staff were also very amenable and, as long as people are good about buying dinner and/or drinks while there, it does not cost us anything.

This is a great way for us to move the meetup northwards while still keeping it convenient. Dinner and Drupal is not a bad combination, after all.

re: Kerry as Group Manager

I second Elizabeth's recommendation of Kerry LaRose.

Having worked with Kerry over the last month, I can affirm that he has already devoted a lot of thought (along with Elizabeth and Chad) to how to grow the community, and has already demonstrated that he is willing to make the time commitment required.

Hi Austin DUG members,

I'm happy to announce that Kerry LaRose has taken over responsibilities from me as the new Austin Drupal Users Group Manager!

Although somewhat "administrative" in nature, the Manager's position is important in terms of helping the Austin DUG move forward, setting / coordinating / establishing events, answering general queries from the community, etc.

Let's all thank Kerry for agreeing to take on this volunteer responsibility & let's all give him the support he needs to ensure the Austin DUG continues to prosper and grow. Thanks Kerry!
