I'm collecting some info about distributions including Drupal and a selection of modules for newspapers and magazines. Examples are OpenPublish (project), ProsePoint, and the Innovation News installation profile.
There is also Managing News (Drupal installation profile), from Development Seed, an RSS/Atom based news tracker with search, channels and mapping.
Additionally, E-Publish and E-Journal, mentioned in another discussion about newspaper/magazine modules, seem to be small groups of modules, rather than complete Drupal distributions.
Some comparisons of OpenPublish and ProsePoint and their suitable use cases are:

NodeStream!
Having written the documentation for NodeStream I must of course throw in a comment about the NodeStream distribution. It is a distribution targeted at newspapers, but also magazines and other sites with plenty of editorial material.
Some of its more salient features:
Note that NodeStream is not a complete newspaper site – it is a platform that inlcudes features that 99% of newspapers want (but not 99% of all the desired features). It should be seen as a starting point, and its architecture and components are built with this purpose in mind.
Also note that NodeStream is a work in progress (currently alpha4). Feel free to submit feature request and of coures to join in the development and documentation!

Where is the download for NodeStream?
Itangalo, can you direct me where to go and which file(s) to download so I can test out the distribution? It looks good.
Thanks,
Joe

I would also be interested in testing NodeStream. Can the makefile be invoked from a shared host?
I tried to use nodestream
I tried to use nodestream with Pressflow 6.25 and there are lot of notices.

Drupal CVS
Since drupal.org insisted on packaging all modules the maintainer for NodeStream decided to remove the releases – which means that it has to be downloaded from CVS instad.
You could do this manually from the web interface, but in the long run it will be easier to use a CVS tool (or command line) to download it.
It has a littlebit tricky instructions on how to install – NodeStream should be put in a profile sub folder, and then the nodestream.make should be called from your Drupal installation root. This will build all the stuff you need, and even download third party libraries (which can't be included in code hosted on drupal.org).
I hope this gives some help on the way. Sorry I didn't have an easier answer. :-/

I'd like to patch my previous statement:
You could do this manually from the web interface, but in the long run it will be easier to use a CVS tool (or command line) to download it.It is possible to get all the files from the web interface of the code repository, or to download it using a terminal. In the long run it will be easier to use a comfortable GUI tool and, eventually, Git.
Thanks for the links!
I'm hoping on doing a screencast of how to install NodeStream, as there are more people having problems doing this. I'll write a comment here when it is done.
Cheers!

Nodestream
Is there somebody who installed and runs Nodestream 1.0?
I downloaded it from http://www.nodestream.org/releases/nodestream-6.x-1.0.tar.gz (and even Drupal 6.20)
but for example the .profile file is missing.

Options to publish an online journal!
Hello There!
I am running a journal on PKP Open Journal System (OJS) in a commercial server and am looking for a university library to publish it. I contacted Arizona State University Library and they said not, but sent me this paragraph
“OJS is a great platform, but it isn’t the only solution out there. Have you investigated other options? There are a few resources that may help on this guide: http://libguides.asu.edu/content.php?pid=164274&sid=2079463. I hope you can find something that will fit within your budget.”
that helped me a great deal to find out about other options to publish a journal. I decided to use Digital Publishing Systems (DPubS) but am still looking for the installation package. My idea which seems is popularly used is to publish the journal in DPUbS and in Drupal OpenPublish (I heard that Drupal E-Journal is obsolete.). On DPubS we will provide the editorial process up to the publication of articles, and on Drupal OpenPublish we market the journal to a large audience.
I just installed Drupal 7.18 with a beautiful a TB Theme using the demo package but need to work on the configuration of the journal. I was not able to install the OpenPublish distribution due to execution errors and now after finding about the advantages of the TB Theme packages I don’t want it.
Does someone know about a journal running OpenPublish that I can search?

News Theme Responsive
Juan, have you looked at this theme? It's working well for us and we've built several d weekly newspaper websites already for 2013.

IAB ad units
I really wish theme designers would begin such projects by embracing the IAB universal ad package as a core requirement. If you don't have a revenue plan, you're not going to have a website very long.

Profitable News Site & IAB
Good morning Y,
We are using IAB or at least a 300 px wide ad column on the right. We just set-it up that way.
I have found with my weekly newspaper website clients that if you let them know before the design starts that they will incorporate IAB from the beginning, everything works great in the end.
We've launched about over 100 newspaper websites so far and plan on another 100 for 2013.
Last Thursday in eight hours at a small MN newspaper we sold over $9000 in advertising, our goal is $40,000 annualized.
