Mobile Voices (VozMob) is a platform for immigrant and/or low-wage workers in Los Angeles to create stories about their lives and communities directly from cell phones. VozMob appropriates technology to create power in our communities and achieve greater participation in the digital public sphere.

The project was born out of a collaboration between the Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism at the University of Southern California (ASC&J) and the Institute of Popular Education of Southern California (IDEPSCA), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to create a more humane and democratic society by responding to the needs and problems of disenfranchised people through leadership development and educational programs based on Popular Education methodology.

We use participatory design to develop, configure, and theme around the needs of our community correspondents. Technically, VozMob is a Drupal-based mobile blogging platform. VozMob has been designed to make it easy to post content to Drupal from mobile phones via voice calls, SMS, or MMS. VozMob comes with filters that clean up incoming multimedia messages, allows new users to register via SMS, and lets site editors send multimedia content out to registered users' mobile phones.
