This group is a meeting, discussion and collaboration space for all interested in using Drupal in the academia and research environments. Drupal is an excellent platform for running sites of departments, associations, centers, research projects, conferences, ejournals, or even entire universities.
This group was started following discussions around the excellent Biblio module. However, all topics related to using Drupal in an academic/research environment are welcome, as well as very specific issues related to Biblio development. Relevant discussions may occur in the Drupal in Education, Conference Organizing Distribution, Language Learning Communities or Curriculum and Training groups.
3 BoFs on University sites, 5 BoFs about science
Drupalcon Chicago has been an interesting moment for research/science/academia stuff. I count several BoFs and there seems to be three different groups emerging. One is of course about education, but I"m hoping this will be discussed in the higher education group. A Second topic deals with the websites of universities. The third topic deals with the research itself. I"ll just quickly list the name of the BoFs.

I'm pleased to announce you my latest working paper "The genesis and pursuit of breakthrough innovation with the Drupal ecosystem as a living-lab for R&D management". It is based on my R&D conference paper and contains the Drupalcon interview from Copenhagen. You can see the abstract and get the full paper here.
I've posted it to Curriculum and Training as it relates to my earlier discussion on training versus educating, it contains some data and an example of my course.
Read moreModule to provide Drupal Etherpad Integration
I wanted to post something here to get some feedback on the Drupal/Etherpad module I'll be starting on soonish.
My plan at the moment is the create a CCK field which, when added to a content type, will pull in an etherpad into the page via an iframe. When creating the field, you'll be able to choose which of the many free etherpad sites out there you'd like to use or if you have one, your own install of etherpad.

During Drupal cxo in Brussels we had several interesting session on training. In a personal reflection about the discussions I would like to give my understanding how we could get more young people (students) into Drupal via education.
I'm looking forward to your opinion about this reflection.

Hello friends!
I hear at the acquia webinar that OpenScholar planing to integrate some university functional.
I discussed few projects for universities and large medical centers and I think that such sites need microsites with own spaces and features for faculties or departments.
I decided to built this system. I think this system could be very expected, because it meets requirments of large communities. Imagine community of some association with main site and many microsites of organizations who make this community.
Drupal as a vehicle for federated identity/content
I'd like to get some feedback on a few ideas for federating identity in the research and education spheres and Drupal's role in it. On the surface, Drupal should be the ideal platform with RDF and OpenID in core but I haven't seen the notion of federation discussed much. I think this could be of interest to the curriculum and training community who often have to deal with the consequences of silos.
Here's my outline of how I think the education and academic communities could benefit from federation http://researchity.net/2010/07/08/federated-academic-identity.

I was just wondering if we could get a working list of tools and modules that would be useful to academics in general.
I am working on a website for the academics that work with my non-profit, and have been trying to find and use tools in a useful way to them (sometimes more successful than others)

Hi all
I and my friend are working for a fresh middle sized university in Cambodia. Our work is directly related to administering the university. After about 1 year research, we decided to use Drupal 7 for intranet and internet applications of entire university including student application and registration process, library, faculty, department, course, exam managing, room managing, documentation and file sharing etc. We will try to supply all community software needs via Drupal by using existing modules and writing tones of other codes and we started to build it.
Looking for Alpha Testers for Eduglu, a new Drupal Install Profile for Higher Education
I've been working on a social learning site based on Drupal for the past two years as a student at Brigham Young University and am now working towards readying it for its maiden release into the world as a full-fledged Drupal install profile.
My goal with Eduglu is to:
a) Provide a superb out-of-the-box social learning engine to help departments, clubs, classrooms, and other campus groups communicate, collaborate, and learn with one another.
Biblio Collections
Lets get some definite ideas about biblio collections.. a way to create personalized bibliographic information.
Biblio Collections
Biblio is a drupal module which stores scholarly publication information. Biblio provides css (cascading stylesheets) for popular citation formats (e.g., APA, IEEE, etc.).
Biblio requires each citation be assigned a content type (e.g., journal article, book, etc.)
Biblio Collections would provide the ability to conveniently group publications. This document serves as the specifications of HOW biblio collections will be implemented.

Personal portfolios in Drupal and interoperability
Is anybody out there using Drupal for building e-portfolios?
I was at a Mahara conference recently and attending a talk about LEAP2A (http://wiki.cetis.ac.uk/LEAP2A_specification) a new interoperability spec. Efforts to make it compatible with RDFa are underway and I was wondering if anybody from the Drupal side would be interested in joining in the discussion.

Read moreRoadmap for making Biblio use CCK nodes
Introduction
Currently Biblio is still using custom node types. As a result it is necessary to build bridge modules to enable integration of functionality that by default already is available to CCK content types. Also since Biblio has developed it's own functionality ecosystem there are a couple of functionalities that currently only exist for Biblio nodes.
