Changing the design of a template through the CSS - tip

Folks,

You'll forgive me in advance for my obsession with design! And, for those of you already familiar with this little nugget of wisdom, I do not claim to be a wise man - or a nugget.

I am currently working hard to understand how to easily change a design within templates. Eventually to create new templates, or to simply (and drastically) change existing templates. I discovered something that drove me crazy for awhile. Now I am a much happier designer. Again, some of you may already know this...

I recently come across the problem when I was porting one static site to drupal. Drupal will automatically provide a unique class id for every menu items. This is good but it is also very inconvenient to use css to customize the look of every menu item, especially if one wishes to use pictures instead of plain texts for menu items. I did it by add a snippet into the theme.

So I think a module that enable user to customize the menu class id DIRECTLY is useful. This module is also responsible for checking the existing class IDs of menu items to ensure that every id is unique.

I have started a stylesheet for the Zen STARTERKIT which converts the theme to "light text on dark background."

Last week I started the challenge to upgrade <a href="http://testedgroup.com" target=_blank">my custom zen sub-theme from zen 5.x-0.7 to zen 5.x-1.0 which has taken a couple more hours effort than I had originally expected. The outcome so far however was worth the effort. Thanks JohnAlbin and contributors.

With the excellent documentation, I have decided to start and modify my frontpage from the traditional river of news to display NODE-X that wraps around BLOCK-X displayed on the right hand side of the content. Now I have hit a barrier and I need your input...

Just wanted to share a quick theme override that others might find useful.

For a group blog site we've been building (http://www.newamerica.net/blog), the Slideshow module is a great way to give users an easy way to drop images into their posts. The only problem was that, more often than not, someone would decide to post only one image -- which results in an unnecessary header of "Previous | Image 1 of 1 | Next".

I just came across a css framework sponsored by google called 'blueprint'
I haven't tried it yet, but it sounds like it could be a time saver....
