Drupal or Moodle for platform with repositories plus learning tools? Experiences and advice asked.
Doubting between Drupal and Moodle - Experiences/advice asked. We received a grant to develop an open learning platform on anatomy, that will contain both repositories for anatomical data and learning functionality using these data. The anatomical data comprises images, separate terms, coordinates, folders with Google-maps-like image tiles, video, 3D data, etc., all to be multi-tagged. The learning functionalities are for instance quizzes, flash cards, 'drawing on image'-assignments, peer-review, ranking, competition, serious games, etc.
Read moreEducation Summit before DrupalCon Austin?
DrupalCon Austin is still six months away, but I am curious:
a) Has there been any talk yet of a pre-conference higher ed summit? Larger than a BOF or meeting for dinner; I'm thinking more of an all-day thing.
b) If plans are not already in the works, would there be any interest in such an event?
Student portal in Drupal
Our Drupal team has recently been tasked with building a Student Portal for the campus. It will need to pull data from enterprise systems such as PeopleSoft (student data) and Desire2Learn (LMS), as well as other Drupal sites (news and events). I was wondering if anyone in this group has built, or is currently building, a student portal in Drupal? If so, I'd love to hear about your experience.

Drupal Connect (the company I work for) recently released and open sourced Trekk, a Drupal distribution for Universities. It supports content sharing (courses, faculty, news, etc.) to sub-sites as well as easy HTML migration from legacy sites.
If this sounds like something you're interested in, check out this demo video of the legacy site migration features, or check out the source on GitHub.

Drupalcon was a great leep forward for education. Drupal is taking off in k-12, university and private sector training usage for the delivery of educational materials. A mixed group of people passionate about education and training got together for a learning management system (LMS) BoF at Drupalcon. You can read some of the conclusions of that group here http://groups.drupal.org/node/219814

Retaining students in higher education is a big challenge as colleges and universities struggle to maintain a high level of customer service in the face of tightening budgets and larger student populations. We at Cal State Monterey Bay are no different, and have been working on a Drupal install profile to help make our faculty, advisors, and support staff more efficient when working with students.

We recently completed a redevelopment of our Higher Education marketing site onto the Drupal platform. It took us just over a year to migrate it from a custom PHP site.
The web address is at http://www.ciu.edu.
I am the lead developer on it.
We are still trying to figure some stuff out for it, like staged vs. live modules and speed issues. If any one has any ideas or tips, let me know.

This presentation is for a technical audience, as it is mostly a discussion of the architecture. Very good stuff.

Greetings all. I met many you at DrupalCon, but not all of us have met, I'm Kevin O'Brien and I work for San Francisco State University. I want to keep the momentum going on getting a California State-wide university Drupal group together. (Hey If you can think of a catchy name/acronym that would be good too). In these times, I believe it is really important to share resources with each other, as many of us are most likely duplicating effort on each individual campus.
