Vote for a Drupal Site to Win Apps for Democracy Contest!

We thought the Apps for Democracy contest was a great way to show the DC government that Drupal is the leading open source platform for government project and a great chance to get them familiar with the platform. So we built a Drupal site and entered it in the contest. You can vote for it here. You don't need to log in so it only takes three seconds to vote, but voting closes tonight at midnight, so vote soon!

Only local images are allowed.

The site we built is called DC Bikes and you can check it out here. It's a guide to biking in DC and puts mostly city data on a map so people find detailed bike routes in DC, monitor bike theft in real time, and buy bike equipment on Craigslist. This site is built on Drupal and is the only submission that is 100% open source - we used open source Mapnik for our maps rather than Google Maps. Specifically we used <a href="http://drupal.org/project/feedapi>FeedAPI and Feed Element Mapper for the site's aggregation, and the spaces module allowed us to build it pretty quickly.

BuddyPress

Has anyone taken a look at BuddyPress (Buddypress.org), the WordPress-based social networking project?

I just downloaded it and have been pretty impressed by its ease of use and the supplied widgets for groups, forums, and activity tracking. The base theme BuddyPress provides is decent. Several sites have been developed with it (flokka.com)

Vote for Open Source in NZ

Are you heading out to vote this morning? Have you thought about how each of the parties support open source? The Greens's IT policy explicitly states a number of policies about encouraging Open Source in Business, Government and Education.

It's hard to beat that! Further; The Greens use Drupal and CiviCRM heavily in both their public-facing and internal systems -- their actions match their words. Go Greens!

OT (kinda): Volunteer webmaster for COSSFEST?

Apologies if this post is not relevant to the group....

The Calgary Open Source Systems Festival (COSSFEST) is under active planning for an April/May 2009 event. We have the start of a new website in place at http://www.cossfest.ca. We are looking for someone with better graphic design skills than myself, and with enough spare time to bring this site to life. There are a few things we'd like the site to do that I have no experience with (online paid registration, etc).

Pentaho B.I. Suite?

Has anyone here implemented or worked with the Pentaho open source B.I. Suite? I'm curious about what potential avenues and possibilities exist in bringing Drupal & Pentaho together for reporting & B.I.

Thoughts? Discussion? Experiences?
