Should all groups be "open"? What are valid reasons to make a group "closed"?
(Cross-posted because this is a g.d.o management issue as well as a g.d.o usage issue.)
I've noticed that several groups on g.d.o are set as closed membership (i.e., g.d.o members can't just join, they have to ask to join or be invited to join).
Very partial list of some closed groups, for illustration

Getting a new group moderated
I started a new Drupal group for my area a little over a month ago (first meet up tonight!), but I'm noticing that the group is not in the main groups listing and has the moderation message at the top of it. Have I missed a step in setting up the group? Any way I can request to have it moderated into a "real" group? Thanks for any pointers!

Requesting the addition of Mark EWERS, westbywest, and OddSim as organizers of the St. Louis group. http://groups.drupal.org/st-louis
This group has been meeting monthly for the past year and a half, and all of the proposed organizers have been active in participating or organizing these meetups. The current group organizer djw2 no longer lives in St Louis and does not seek to be active in the group. See the discussion here: http://groups.drupal.org/node/123199

Requesting the addition of jromine and williamestrada as organizers/admin of Orange County Drupal (OC Drupal) - http://groups.drupal.org/orange-county. This group has been active and formally meeting at http://www.meetup.com/ocdrupal/ but cannot post to or manage the GDO page effectively to promote events or to have members interact socially. Many views have been disabled on the OC Drupal GDO page. An attempt to reach out to current moderator/organizer, Paris, on March 17th received no response. A request was made through email and through his GDO profile contact page.
Read moreMerge DrupalCamp Vancouver into Vancouver?
Hola -
I wanted to leave the DrupalCamp Vancouver group: http://groups.drupal.org/drupal-camp-vancouver and then realized I am the group owner!
I posted here: http://groups.drupal.org/node/137149 and have had no replies from interested parties who'd want to take over.
Hoping perhaps we can merge that into the main Vancouver group: http://groups.drupal.org/vancouver unless someone wants to pick it up. We've been focusing more on the PNW Drupal Summit out here than camps, so there's not much action on the camp group anymore.
Thanks!

Chapter3 seems to be cross-posting their training events into many groups, including those far removed geographically form where the training is happening.
My take is that this is crossing the line into abuse. Such events obviously are reasonably for geographically close groups, and also for http://groups.drupal.org/curriculum-and-training which specifically invites them.
I propose unpublishing/deleting these otherwise, but want to be cleat about our policy.

Can we do a little customization to prevent posting anything except open groups. Perhaps admins can have the option to edit a group and make it moderated in the rare case that's appropriate.
It's not clear in the moderation process sometimes when they are not created as open - for example I approved this group http://groups.drupal.org/yemen without realizing it was invite-only. I've just set it as open. Perhaps they were wondering why no one ever joined.

I see posts that are in a boatload of unrealated groups fairly frequently. If I can figure out what group it should go in, I edit out the OT ones. But this doesn't scale well. Do we have a software solution? I don't use OG much so I don't know what's all available. Seems like there should be something for limiting how many groups you can post to. Something permission based would be good, too, so admins can override if needed.
Read morespamattack view
Occasionally we get really blasted with spam. Like, in the last few days a user posted a ton of spam using 4 different accounts.
I've now added views_bulk_operations to the site and created a view at http://groups.drupal.org/admin/content/comments/spamattack that has an exposed filter for username.
You can also get to this view by going to a user's profile page and clicking the "Administer comments" tab.
Access is locked down for people who can "administer comments" so not everyone will see it, but for those who help with this it should be useful.
Read morerejected CSS group, made Jesse an admin of theme group
Informational only:
I've delete a proposed group on CSS handling in Drupal: http://groups.drupal.org/admin/reports/modr8/event/4678
I took this action after quite a bit of discussion with author (Jesse) via e-mail and chat. I convinced her instead of creating a new group to become an admin for http://groups.drupal.org/theme-development and try to bring that group back from being mostly a waste-land of job postings. It seems like the existing users of that group would be better served by some real content and discussion.
