Staging Content to Production Servers

There is a discussion on the development list about some clients wanting to "push" content from a staging server to the production server.

One way to do this for content is using John VanDyk's publish and subscribe.

Another is Node Import/Export which is being written by Jeremy Epstein as part of SoC.

Those can be taking further with users and roles too being migrated from staging to production, and that can be a truly federated environment.

You can see the original discussion in this thread.

Planning DrupalCamp Code Sprint near Portland July 19th-23rd

Update: We are still planning on holding this code sprint, but at different dates. We are actively working on lining up funding currently.

After talking with a lead Plone developer the other day who told me that code sprints are by and large hugely productive events for the Plone community I've decided to throw my hat in the ring to help organize one for Drupal.

Itinerary

The rough plan is to get a dozen or so serious Drupal hackers together for 3-5 days. Attendees should show up with a pretty good idea of what they want to work on and hopefully will be tackling problems that are best solved collaboratively. Every night we will go around and demo what's been accomplished during the day. If Drumm can come we'll have him help cook pancakes and big hippy/vegan dinners. We'll also make sure to have some fun outdoors.

Theming Drupal Workshop - Washington, DC - Aug 9th and 10th

Start:
2006-08-09 00:00 - 2006-08-10 17:00 America/New_York

Lullabot will be running a two workshop sessions in Washington, DC. The second is Theming Drupal and discusses how to get control over your themes. Drupal’s architecture allows extensive control over how pages are presented, yet this is still a bit of a “dark art” to many Drupal professionals. Bring in your designs and we’ll shed some light.

Find more information about this workshop here. Information about other Lullabot workshops is here.

Scalable static file hosting and some thoughts on Amazon S3

So, one of the big things with static file serving is that it requires an entire Drupal bootstrap, which sucks up a lot of system resources. We have work to do in Drupal/the File API to support some interesting scalability options, remote files, etc. etc.

But, I think there are some interesting models for doing highly scalable static file serving outside of Drupal (and Amazon's S3 is cool).

Prioritizing requirements - the process of planning new software implementation

Rob Purdie is going to be helping Greenpeace UK select a new CMS to replace their custom-built ColdFusion one. He's going to be blogging the process -- not just what applications he is looking at (Drupal is one of them), but also the actual process of selection. Definitely required reading for anyone that does consulting around helping organizations select/implement applications.
