Using drupal as backend to a legacy system - advice appreciated

I'm looking at a slightly different use of drupal to the typical and interested in getting some feedback from experienced developers.

I have a number of sites whose content is generated purely by in-house staff which is edited using a bespoke php cms. Unlike the drupal style of all-in-one cms, we use a completely separate front-end to display sites while the cms is solely concerned with management of our in-house users and forms which poke various types of content into the db. I won't be changing the front end but I'm looking at the viability of swapping out the back-end cms for drupal.

One (Module) List to Rule Them All

During drupalcon several of the business tracks returned to the same notion of maintaining a list of qualified contriuted modules.
So dear "I drupal for dollars" crowd...
The classics are obviously
1. cck
2. views
3. image field
4. imagecache
And then as requirements start to rise
5. og
6. workflow
7. relativity
8. voting-api (plus most frontends work fine)

So that was easy... but now what about the exotics? What do YOU always include in your projects and what should enter this "absolutly essential module list?"
best regards
Lior

Qualifying a customer

This is the first part of a set of discussions which tries to document the best practices in the management of a successful drupal project from the qualification phase untill the successful signoff and delivery.
The overview thread can be found here - http://groups.drupal.org/node/9483

With the big demand all over the world for skilled drupal talent to deliver drupal based sites the question rises... How and when to say no to projects?
We all know of the client that want's a crazy array of features for a very small amount of money.

Open Sourced Business Practices

Hi Guys and Gals..
I've attended several of the business tracks in drupalcon boston and one of the emerging patterns (Which was verbally advocated by Boris Mann in his session) was to form a pool of joint resources to improve and add methodology to our business practices.
The most inspiring example I've seen was by the "Drupal performance agency" and was handed out by the tag1 consultants.
You can see the example here - http://tag1consulting.com/drupal/performance
These performance checklist are superb and are licensed under the creative commons attribiution sharealike2.0 license.

Anyone know of a service that identifies if a company is using Drupal?

I apologize in advance if this is not the most applicable forum, but does anyone know of a business intelligence type service (like a www.hoovers.com) that identifies which CMS a company is utilizing? Essentially, is there a list out there that indicates if a company is using Drupal?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Org Chart?

Hi folks,

We're interested in the possibility of autogenerating an org chart with svg (or flash). We are currently using Visio to automatically create org charts from Active Directory data. This then is saved as awful visio html and manually uploaded to our site.

We have Drupal talking to Active Directory now, and would love to take the step of using Drupal to create the org chart dynamically.

Anyone tried this, or have ideas?

What ad server do you use?

I have a consumer information site in a very specific niche. I've got AdSense and Commission Junction accounts today, but I think it would be very feasible to sell CPM ads directly (since this is such a specific niche and I know a lot of the players personally). The question is, using what platform?

My closest competitor uses Open AdStream by Real Media (and they say this on their site!) but their site also happens to be written in ColdFusion so I don't think of them as cutting-edge...

Free Drupal Themes Wanted!

Hi!
I'm peach, or Jurriaan, from All Drupal Themes and I'm having some trouble finding good themes to port and release to the community. I've already ported several themes but it turns out there were some problems:
-Apparently people were more interested in 3-column themes
-Some of the themes were not deemed useful at all
-Most good looking themes I find are Creative Commons licensed, which makes sense from the designers point of view, but unfortunately they are not allowed on drupal.org/project/Themes. I was reassured when I signed up for a cvs account that I must not upload CC2.5 licensed themes, only GPL.

I've created this post to communicate with the Drupal community, for whom I make the themes, and hopefully some people have good ideas for themes to be ported to drupal! If anyone has a GPL theme in mind please post it in the comments sections.

If you know of a gorgeous CC licensed design, it's also eligible for a free drupal port but I will put it up with my free drupal themes department but it won't show up on drupal.org/project/Themes.

Looking forward to your input!
JR

Recommended modules for Podcasting

Greetings from Texas!
I've been using Drupal to build sites for a couple of years, but, have never incorporated podcasting. I now have a need to build a site to host the business podcast of a long term customer. I'd like to leverage the experience of my fellow Drupaler's to climb the learning curve rapidly.

  • What are the best modules to use for podcasting? Why?
  • What are best practices (tips/tricks/traps) for Drupal podcasting?
  • When should I roll-my-own using CCK/Views?

TIA, David

Can anyone recommend a server setup?

Hi,

We need our www.projectstars.com site to run a lot faster than it is at the moment and wondered if anyone with experience could advise us on a good option for upgrading from our current virtual server. We're using memcache, block caching, and general drupal caching but as most of the site is dynamic I'm guessing that having a fast database server would help.
