Migrating from one install profile to another
I have a new install profile that I use and want to move my old (acquia install profile) sites over to this new platform. I got on IRC and asked and got this answer:
edit your new install profile
and add 'old_short_name' = 'acquia'
or carbon, or whatever
that will allow you to migrate acquia sites to it
GREAT! except I dont know where to stick old_short_name' = 'acquia'. I tried putting it in hook_profile_details, re-verifying my platform, but I still couldn't migrate acquia sites to it.

Problem installing aegir 0.4-alpha8 with install.sh
I am trying to install 0.4-alpha8 Aegir and when I run the script "install.sh" I get the following

No welcome emails using Aegir 0.4 Alpha 8
On Aegir 0.4 Alpha 5, I received "Welcome Emails" from webmaster@domain.com but not with Alpha 8. Is this a know issue? Is there a work around? - Thanks!

Do i have to get a 3rd hard drive to run a virtual machine on linux so i can run aegir on the linux based vps hosting subscription(from linode) i brought months ago? (but havent set up yet because the whole thing confuses me)

User permissions for aegir client role
I've created a new user in my Aegir 0.4 alpha 8 setup that has the "aegir client" role. That user can create new sites from an existing platform. But that user is unable to create backup tasks, delete tasks, disable/enable tasks, etc, for sites associated with their client/user. Attached is a screenshot showing the tasks that the client should be able to access, but is unable to.
I checked permissions and it looks like the "aegir client" role should be able to do all those things. Does anyone have thoughts on how to fix this? Thanks!

Most sessions will involve an overview of a tool, then attendees will become familar with the tool by using it to complete a task. Time has been allocated to allow people to ask questions and share information about their own development workflows.

Installing Aegir: Need DNS and Virtual Host configuration help
Hi everyone,
I am very excited about aegir, but very fresh to LAMP etc. I have a fresh Ubuntu 10.04 downgraded to PHP 5.2 and installed Aegir Alpha8 cleanly (on linode) (thanks to the excellent install.txt and mig5's screencast).
Now that this is done, I am not sure how to set up my DNS or virtualhosts to point to the aegir site. I added an A entry in the DNS manager for aegir.mydomain.com, however going to aegir.mydomain.com points to the same location as mydomain.com.

It finally works as expected (well, almost - it's still alpha! :). You can try Provision available on GitHub: http://github.com/omega8cc/provision. It includes modified install script and hostmaster makefile to make your life easier.
[UPDATE: now it supports also SSL integration and apt-get Nginx versions, with Boost compatibility, but it should be at least nginx-0.6.36, so with Debian you need backports, and with Ubuntu you need at least Karmic or newer.]

Aegir Documentation Sprint during Copenhagen?
Since a lot of new stuff is going into Aegir right now, what do you all say we do a three to four hour doc sprint during copenhagen week - planned and timed right we can try and get irc participation.
Some possible areas to work on:
- Review and rework form helptexts and other end-user help text
- Expand and update the wiki pages in groups
- Begin documenting the API (although maybe it is too soon(tm)?)
- Review/clarify code for murky/unclear comments

Hi all,
Just read the following blog post http://www.turnkeylinux.org/blog/contest and it made me think it would be pretty cool to have an Aegir Turnkey Appliance. Anyone interested in working together to create one - the docs seem pretty comprehensive and they even have an example tklpatch which adds Drupal 5 to their LAMP server.
Obviously if it gets into the contest and wins proceeds can be split as agreed prior to submission ;). I was thinking it would be a pretty cool addition to the aegir project?
Any thoughts?

Hey all,
I am wondering what kind of hacking a person could do on a multisite environment if php filter is enabled? Can they access other sites?
If so, isn't this more than a "php filter" issue and also any cck field (since you can do php stuff in their also) is also a hazard?
If there are issues, how do you host many sites on the same aegir server for different users (who want full access to drupal) if they can potentially hack into other sites?

Install profile detached from site
I'm trying to add a domain alias to my Aegir site (the one I installed when I first installed Aegir). When I edit the site node by adding my alias and saving, I get the error: "Please fill in a valid profile."
The profile appears to be correct though. Again, on the site node, profile is "hostmaster".
For some reason, I thought it might be some kind of permissions thing, so I did
sudo chown -R aegir:www-data /var/aegir/hostmaster-0.4-alpha7
sudo chmod -R g+w /var/aegir/hostmaster-0.4-alpha7Is the documentation missing some crucial parts in 0.4 alpha?
I would be very grateful for some help here, and would also be happy to offer my help in improving the documentation, but I simply don't know where to start.
I'm trying my best to work my way through the Aegir installation, but after getting very annoyed with it yesterday because it simply wouldn't work, I eventually found that the instructions I was following for 0.3 have been broken for some time. That alone might well explain why a system with so much potential hasn't seen such widespread adoption?
To compound matters further though, the documentation for 0.4 appears to completely omit the instructions on where to download the correct files, and where to place them:

I accept I might have failed to notice these instructions elsewhere but, given that a Google search tends to deliver people either to this wiki page - http://groups.drupal.org/aegir-hosting-system/documentation - or to the group homepage - http://groups.drupal.org/aegir-hosting-system - and that none of these pages set out in simple terms what to do, and how to do it, I'm amazed that more people are not asking for help on this.
What am I missing (apart from a brain, I mean!)?
