Internationalization

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

This group works on internationalization issues, like making it possible to translate menus, nodes and taxonomies in Drupal. This includes everything from process and workflows, to actual code issues or optimizations required. The Translations group is where to go if you are working on translating Drupal core or contrib modules.

First Drupal 8 multilingual user testing results

One of the key things I wanted to do in the Drupal 8 Multilingual Initiative after the December 1st feature freeze hits is to go and do lots of user testing of the functionalities we built and adapt the user interfaces and flows to make it easier to build multilingual sites (and then test it again). Not many people believed this would actually happen (when you say in an issue you'll follow up with more user testing, and so on, it can be seen as just a way out to move on). However I've got outstanding help from Bojhan Somers, Dharmesh Mistry and Lisa Rex on best practices for user testing. I not only got help on the tools to use, but also building out a concrete test plan with Dharmesh and Bojhan actively involved. To say the test was well prepared is an understatement.

Last Drupal 8 Multilingual Initiative meeting before feature freeze! (on November 30th, 2012)

Start:
2012-11-30 15:00 - 16:00 UTC
Organizers:
Event type:
Online meeting (eg. IRC meeting)

We are a mere hours before feature freeze as this meeting is being held. I know people in the Drupal 8 Multilingual Initiative have been working really hard to meet this deadline and almost all of our patches are up in a row for commit with final help text refinements. So for that great work I'd love to send a wink and a high-five to all who cannot attend the meeting.

Redirect to front page when no translated content

Is there a way for redirecting to other language's front page, when language switcher is clicked and there is no translation for that content?

I've searched a lot, but found no solution.

I'm using D7 core & i18n module.

We are right at a week and a half from the feature freeze deadline as this meeting is being held. For this very limited time, we are naturally only focusing on a very limited set of issues, but probably still too much to sanely go through, so we need all hands to help and get through the final stretch!

Support for complex grammar

Hello,

There is a basic problem with the i18n module and I was wondering how other people are dealing with it, or whether there has been any discussion towards its solution. This is the problem:

We are right at two weeks from the feature freeze deadline as this meeting is being held. I can only illustrate that point with this little picture on the right.

For this very limited time, we are only focusing on a very limited set of issues, but probably still too much to sanely go through, so we need all hands to help and get through the final stretch!

Multilingual issues for the last 3 weeks before Drupal 8 feature freeze

We are in the final stretch nearing feature freeze for Drupal 8 coming on December 1st. What does that mean? Well, although not everybody agrees on the specifics, generally it means new things will not be possible to get in, but smoothening out what is already included and applying existing APIs and features to systems not yet covered should be the focus then. At the multilingual intiaitive, we'd love to do extensive user testing of all the new and changed things as well as make our APIs more consistent and better documented after December 1st.

However, for three weeks, the wild ride of feature additions is still on and we still have some key features to add before the time runs out. So I'd like to call your attention to just these few issues that need immediate help and feedback.

Once again, our regular bi-weekly Wednesday meeting time is here! (See all the meeting times at http://groups.drupal.org/node/257888).

First off, we are going to celebrate some great stuff from BADCamp, but then get back down to work and look at the current top priority task board and cherry-pick everybody's favorites. All of those are in dire need of reviews and input, so if you can spare some time to look at those, that would be superb! We need your help to get through the finish line!

At the time of this meeting, we'll only have 23 days left (barely more than 3 weeks!!) until code freeze! Keep moving!

This IRC meeting is in the #drupal-i18n channel on IRC. See http://drupal.org/irc for more information. The time above is marked with UTC - check in your own timezone.

The 'real' how to create a multilingual panels page

I have searched far and wide to make this happen. But not even one is reliable. Right now the only way that I can do this is create two pages, one in English and another one in Malay. Had to use translation paths to connect these two pages.

Any better idea or way to do this instead of creating two different panel page?

Start:
2012-10-05 15:00 - 16:00 UTC

Event type:
User group meeting

This is the first in our new series of bi-weekly Friday meetings augmenting our existing bi-weekly Wednesday meetings as explained at http://groups.drupal.org/node/257888 - now there is time to meet with like-minded people in the D8MI meeting every week (especially if you struggle to find people online randomly).

There are some very exciting issues on our current top priority task board, including a translation workflow for all configuration installations (and possibly updates), a nicely working entity translation user interface and other important things for both content and configuration translation. All of those are in dire need of reviews and input, so if you can spare some time to look at those, that would be superb!

Having trouble with Multilingual site design and using Content Taxonomy Fields with Translated Vocabularies appearing twice in Node add/edit forms

Well this is my first attempt at taking my site and making it multilingual. I have done a far bit of research and have all the necessary modules I think I need. I am having trouble with getting my vocabularies to play nice. Here is what I have

Drupal 6
Using Content Taxonomy module so that I have the vocabulary load in a field on each node as well as save to the taxonomy tables to be used in other ways.

Drupal 8 Multilingual Initiative meetings now happening each week

So far there were Drupal 8 Multilingual Initiative meetings every second week on Wednesdays from 4pm to 5pm UTC. Some people voiced concerns about the timing, either because it did not match their time availability or it was too early or too late in the day. Also, we only have 9 weeks left before feature freeze, and things are going to (or at least should) speed up. We should keep focused and don't miss opportunities to talk about something when critical features are at risk. We still have an impressive list of things to work through.

So we held a doodle vote and according to the majority vote I set up a Friday meeting time for the weeks not covered earlier. This means the following meeting times where you can find others on the initiative to talk to about things you are working on or need help with:

  • Oct 5, Fri, 3pm UTC
  • Oct 10, Wed, 4pm UTC
  • Oct 19, Fri, 3pm UTC
  • Oct 24, Wed, 4pm UTC
  • Nov 2, Fri, 3pm UTC (on one of our BADCamp sprint days)
  • Nov 7, Wed, 4pm UTC
  • Nov 16, Fri, 3pm UTC
  • Nov 21, Wed, 4pm UTC
  • Nov 30, Fri, 3pm UTC (the very last day before feature freeze!)

After this we probably return to meetings every other weeks, we'll talk about it when we get there. Essentially the Wed meetings every other weeks at 4pm UTC are the ones we already had, and we interject Fri meetings on the other weeks at 3pm UTC. If you want reminders of these events, you can sign up to the Internationalization group's events (see group events block at http://groups.drupal.org/internationalization, ical feed available there). An overall calendar of Drupal 8 initiative meetings can be found in the calendar on the top of the http://drupal.org/community-initiatives/drupal-core page which includes all these events as well as other Drupal 8 happenings.
