Drupal Groups Churches Home

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Welcome

Welcome to the Drupal churches group. This is a group centered around building Church websites with Drupal and a point for members of The Church to go out into the Drupal community. In this group we discuss how to use Drupal, modules to use, integrating other services with Drupal, and the ins and outs of building Church websites.

The Drupal church community extends beyond this group. You can find more information and help in the IRC channel #drupal-churches on irc.freenode.org and on the Geeks and God podcast website.

How to complement Facebook?

Recently a LOT of our church members (adults and teens) have discovered facebook and there has been a growing community and interaction growing there (one of our pastors had a 40th anniversary party organized via facebook).

I have finally found some time to start mulling over what role our church website would have in relation to all of this activity on facebook.

Do you have any ideas or experience in using your church website to complement facebook (not replace it, no need to re-invent a perfectly well working wheel)?

Cost of Consulting?

What are the costs of Drupal consulting, please?

I am building the technology budget for the coming year and want to try to include something for Drupal consulting.

We expect to receive approval to change our church name this Wednesday and so I will need to port over to the new URL and during that time update Drupal, PhP, SQL, etc.

I need someone to assist with doing the transition right and in getting several new features working, roughly in this order of priority:

Linked calendars (master & sub-ministry calendars)
Distributed web area updating by ministry leaders

Working on Bible Reading Plan module

I started working on a Bible Reading Plan module several months ago. It's one of my first Drupal module projects and I've gotten pretty far into the development but then I got side-tracked. I decided to start working on it again and would like to get some feed back from the Drupal community.

Short description of module:

    Adding a Background or Watermark?

I have just put together a Page for our newly forming young adults & professionals small group: http://firstbaptistchurchsh.com/node/28

This is not a "singles" group as is far too common because I don't believe that they are healthy.

This is an Intake/Welcome/Invite-a-Seeker-or-Drifter ministry which may lead to a larger culturally-relevant celebration service with spin-off groups.

That context stated I'd like to put a background or a watermark on the page to make it more interesting, either a picture of our own new Holy Grounds Coffeehouse or something generic.

    Ministry Intranet Style Site Security

I'm working on a D6 site that could be considered an Intranet style site for members of our ministry. It is accessible from anywhere on the Internet, but should have very little content available without logging in.

How do I best lock down the site so that people have to log in before getting information without showing an "Access Denied" page at the first page where they log in? I envision a future where blogs with some public facing content could occur so I don't want to lock out that option in solving this problem.

    Future of the Group

From Drupal Churches Group post on InnovatingTomorrow.net:

The Drupal Churches Group has grown stale with little activity in the last several months. This group, over on groups.drupal.org, was created on a whim but grew to be in the largest 10% of groups. Now, with a large base of members it sits virtually untapped with a large pool of potential. The question is, what will become of the group?

    What does management want?

In an effort to see where the groups manager was interested in taking the group I contacted him. Unfortunately, he is no longer drupaling. Not because drupal doesn't rock. Life has taken him in a different direction and we should wish him the best. But, he did allow me to become the groups manager with an intent to tap into the potential for the good of the kingdom.

    What do you want?

The question remains, what will become of the group? Before I make any changes I'd like to hear from the peanut gallery. What are your suggestions? Should the purpose of the group shift? What about the groups layout and design? Should there be a logo? How about a drupal for churches distribution? Is anyone interested in hosting a churches event?

No matter how crazy you think your idea is I'm interested. Even if it's just a desire for the group and not necessarily a change.

    Group redesign for Churches Group

As you have, no doubt, noticed, this group just adopted a new look. I took advantage of the new panels capabilities to create a number of tabs. This will hopefully help us make even better use of this space. I took some lessons from Drupal Dojo and Drupal in Education (which I did).

Look forward to hearing what you think and how to continue making this group more effective.

Module for showing services (time, pastor, comment?)

There are some postings about modules especially for churches. But none of them are referring to modules which can handle services. Are they existing?

Maybe someone can use CCK etc for this. But is this the quickest / best way? Or are there other modules to give visitors an overview of the services that are coming.

If someone has a site with an example, please put it in the comments!

New Podcast Series on Online Church Community

    Hey Everyone...
Just wanted to point out the latest series over at the Geeks & God Podcast. We're currently in the middle of a series called "forming online community" in which we're talking about building a internet based, interactive community for your church or ministry. Currently, we've got 4 episodes online with 2 episodes to go, which will release in the next 2 weeks (yielding a 6 part series)...

Of course, we talk about Organic Groups but we also cover a much wider spectrum of what it means to create an online community.

Check the series out (in reverse chronological order) at: http://geeksandgod.com/podcast-series/forming-online-community

Hope this helps some folks think about creating online community at their church!

Video Hosting - GodTube, YouTube, & Others?

    EDIT 2:

While I await good counsel here re. the best way to manage the upload and download of video in Drupal I think that I can hard-code HTML to link to videos posted on GodTube the same as we handle a news article:

    <CENTER><font size="+1"><a href="http://www2.hernandotoday.com/content/2007/dec/29/ha-2008-a-new-year-celebrating-building-and-growth/" target="_blank"><BR>

Looks as though my answer is here:

Image handling for church websites / non-technical users

Does anyone have any opinion on the best way to handle image uploads / display for the non-technical users who are the regular maintainers of a church website? One of the big advantages of using Drupal at our church (http://www.stthomasrichmond.org) is that the end users can maintain and add the new content. However, I've always thought that the image handling in Drupal was sub-par and our final decision was somewhat of a compromise.

To me, the choices came down to IMCE and/or the img_assist module. Here is what I think are the pro's and con's of each:

Error "... changes cannot be saved"

I just edited my Front/Home Page to add a picture and to modify text and layout slightly and it worked OK the first time.

I just wanted to get a picture or two from our Youth Christmas presentation from this morning up on the site right away.

I then returned (same Admin account because my user account had been denied edit access and I didn't want to take the time to sort that out) and tried to Preview and then Submit and in both cases received this error:

"This content has been modified by another user, changes cannot be saved."

    Including Drupal Version in Posts?

Is there a way to strongly encourage posters to include the Drupal version to which they refer in their posts?

Even better would be to also include the PHP and MySql versions as well since all three impact one another in terms of available features and performance.

I am a Drupal-in-Diapers user ... uber-newbie if you will ... and this need for Blog/Forum clarity is hardly limited to Drupal, it is a general challenge when trying to filter the relevance of technology-related discussions online.

    Back Door to Drupal?

I think I carelessly shut off the Log In option using Admin instead of User and now I cannot get into my Web site to edit it! :-(

You are not authorized to access this page.

I am guessing there is a back door.

If it is more appropriate please send me private mail.

    How to Suppress Teaser?

I posted this in another thread but it may be "lost" there and missed by the one person who has the answer - so I have copied it here. I hope that is OK.

Anyone know how to suppress the display of the Teaser on the Front/Home Page in Drupal?

It is annoying for a user to have to click "Read More" in order to see the whole page.

After this has been resolved the next challenges are:
