Agenda
Main Presentation
Themers Delight - presented by Ishmael Sanchez
In this presentation, Ishmael plans to cover theming from scratch and tips and tricks (hopefully covering both 6 & 7), including typical hurdles and considerations along the way, css/region/content issues in drupal to css/layout issues of the web vs. design. Ishmael is an advanced themer, and this will be geared more towards beginners and intermediate themers and designers. Ishmael has also converted and created newer Drupal 7 themes, and can cover some of the hurdles and changes in Drupal 7. Plus questions and answers at the end!
Note: This presentation is not the same as the ghetto porting themes from Drupal6 to Drupal7 - presented by Ishmael in Burbank on Wed 3/23. If you're in the valley, it'd be worth making both meetups.
For next month, if you have an idea for something you'd like to learn, post a comment below, or better yet suggest a presentation idea! ... and if you see a topic you'd like to present, post a comment or contact us! Depending on remaining time, we'll have lightning talks, job announcements, break-out groups, and networking. Oh, and of course raffle prizes!
Users Helping Users
The meetup begins at 7:30pm but the doors open a little earlier at 7pm for Users Helping Users, which is a chance for members of the community to help and be helped by others with whatever questions and problems they're having with Drupal. Please note that while Users Helping Users is not designed to be a replacement for bonafide consulting from a Drupal professional that there are plenty of Drupal experts and professionals who attend our meetups and sometimes they need help, too!
Lightning talks
We have time as well for lightning talks, which are 5-10 minute presentations from attendees who would like to share something with the group. If you'd like to give a lightning talk, be sure to come a few minutes early and bring your laptop (and power and display cables) and whatever else you need.
As always, please feel welcome to leave a comment below and let others know what you'd like to present ahead of time.
Job announcements and open Q&A
Everyone has a problem every now and then and the open Q&A session is a chance for attendees to divine answers from the collective wisdom of the group. This is also an opportunity for local businesses to make job announcements and ask for referrals and recommendations.
Raffle! Prizes! Collect them all!
We love our sponsors and have several raffle prizes from our sponsors in the Los Angeles area and around the world. If you or your company would like to sponsor a raffle prize at the LA Drupal meetups, please come early or contact the LA Drupal managers.
Breakout Groups
As we've occasionally done, we'll split up into groups (sometimes called BoFs, or birds of a feather) and each group can jump into a particular topic that's set at the beginning of the meetup. The topics for these BoFs so far have ranged from high performance websites, Features-driven development, PCI compliance and general "getting started" discussions.
Wrap up and Drupal After Dark
Several of us may be going to a local restaurant or bar for a Drupal After Dark afterward. Leave a comment below if you have ideas of a possible bar or restaurant that is nearby.
About LA Drupal
LA Drupal is Southern California's largest hub for all things Drupal, and is one of the world's largest regional Drupal user groups. We host a monthly meeting on the last Tuesday of every month. LA Drupal is also the producer of the annual DrupalCamp LA conference, the largest independent Drupal event in the world for three years running, and Drupal Design Camp LA, a design-oriented conference.
There are also other member led social gatherings and meetups throughout the southland.
Attending LA Drupal events is one of the best ways to meet and talk with other Drupaleros and we encourage you to attend meetings and special events regularly. Whether it's about finding solutions to problems you've been having, sharing something you've learned or just meeting interesting like-minded people, the LA Drupal events are an essential resource for Drupal professionals and hobbyists alike.

Drupal Girls
Hi all!
A female Drupal member just privately emailed me asking how my experience was for the two Drupal meetings I attended. She had an evening job which necessarily impeded her attendance to evening meetings for the time being, but noted the um, 'scarcity' of Drupal girls in previous meetups.
Here is an anecdote about my experience as a Drupal group newbie. I attended the Pasadena meetup, which was very small and intimate- three females were present, and there was a total of six people. The atmosphere was extremely friendly and amiable. I had SO MUCH FUN and wouldn't mind it if there was a Drupal meeting every evening :D
The LA Drupal meeting at Oversee was definitely larger, and I may have seen about three other girls. It looked roughly like 40 to 50 people were in attendance. It took me 45 minutes to try to find some decent parking, and I presume many more people would have attended if the parking situation was clearly + conveniently explained prior to the event.
I joined LA Drupalchix but what limited activity there panned out in Chicago.
I have a strong suspicion there are NUMEROUS designer females who may have felt intimidated by all the programmers, and hence may feel reluctant, but one feature I utterly love about the Drupal community is that I've observed many senior members graciously and generously [thank you LittleLion/Sknight/Pcher1bow] help the newcomers.
Drupal after Dark
After this week's Meet-up at Media Temple, many of us will head to Ugo Bar for Drupal after Dark. The Ugo Bar is a great spot to continue talking Drupal in a more casual atmosphere while enjoying a glass of wine, cocktail, or beer. And homemade Gelato! It is only a mile form Media Temple. See the wiki post for more info.
Please come, All Welcome!
If there is time and
If there is time and interest, I can do a lightning talk version of the Drupal Internals: The settings.php file presentation I did in Santa Barbara last week.
I'd really like encourage
I'd really like encourage others to come prepared to share something you've done in the last week or two regarding drupal. a cool module you've discovered. a cool tool you're using for drupal development. a new theme. a cool client website you've recently built.

At first I didn't realize
At first I didn't realize this comment was a response to mine. Are you asking me not to do a lightning talk if there's time and interest?
huh? why would I say that?
huh? why would I say that? I suggested, as part of your thread asking if other were interested in your lightning talk, for others to come prepared as well.
edit: to be clear - I think your suggestion is great. so much so, that I wanted to encourage others to share.

Sorry, Mike! You and I just talked and this was a simple misunderstanding. I added emphasis to the word others (as in people other than me) and took the entire comment the wrong way. Your first beer's on me tonight.

+1 for Christefano Lighting Talk
I would be very interested in learning more about the settings.php file.
I would like to do a lighting talk, if there is time and interest, that outlines mortendk’s session at DrupalCon Chicago. Morten’s session was titled “How to Make Awesomesauce” and was a wide-ranging talk on the future and current status of theming. This will complement Ishmael’s main talk.
Having as much of DrupalCon
Having as much of DrupalCon brought back to LA Drupal as possible is a good thing. Thanks for your vote, but I'll gladly yield the floor to you if you're giving this lightning talk.
I've done the Drupal Internals settings.php presentation once already and can do it any time later on, if there's time and interest. We might be having a Drupal Internals meetup once a month at Droplabs when we open our doors.
I am assuming
I am assuming there is time for more than one lighting talk.
of course... and hopefully
of course... and hopefully more than one person comes ready to share! its why I suggested more above, and sorry if anyone took it differently.

Stew-bee, after your lighting
Stew-bee, after your lighting talk, I rushed home to listen to the full screen cast from Dropalcon. If any of you didn't see it yet you can watch it here.
I would like to see more dialog about the various Drupal project roles and how to establish a healthy team workflow.
If there is time (and
If there is time (and everyone else that wants to present does so since I'm sure people are tired of seeing me upfront ^_~), I'd be happy to do a lightning talk on either the successor to the views_attach module, eva.
Alternatively, I'd like to present on how to contribute in an issue? I've been working towards helping upgrade the signup module from 6.x -> 7.x.
I think "how to contribute in
I think "how to contribute in an issue" would be an awesome lightning talk!

Theming Ubercart
It looks like there is a good number of people that have talks already prepared. I was going to do a presentation about my experiences with theming and customizing Ubercart. But I think if I wait until the next main meetup I'll have a presentation better prepared -- something with pyrotechnics and dancers; instead of sock puppets and cardboard cut-outs.
Sounds pretty darn cool - +1
I'm happy to let my thoughts go to the wayside to see you present :)
Slides
I'm a glutton for punishment so I'm continue my demo heavy presentation style. Here are the slides for tonight's Drupal theming presentation.

Mixing it up
Mike,
I really liked the mixer segment that you added last night, and the rule that you can only talk to people you don't know. It definitely helped with meeting new people.

Nice Group
I'm a software veteran, drupal newbie. First meetup attendance last night. I like the community here a lot. Looking forward to the pasadena meetup, which is only 5 min from where I am!!
Looks like people are categorizing themselves into Designer / Themer / Developer / Supporter. It'd be nice to be able to see how many of each are represented in the group.
Plus One
+1 for Mike's mixer segment. What an awesome way to get more people to meet.
Although I already mentioned this to Mike and Chris, I think the Lightning Talks™ should be free from questions and suggestions until the presenter has burned through his/her 5 minutes. That way they can focus on their presentation without getting derailed. Of course the risk is that the person with a question or suggestion might have some valuable bit of information that would improve the presentation.
+1 for speed networking
I think having a 1 or 2 minute after-piece for Q&A after a lightning talk could work; it gives the next presenter time to set up while the current presenter answers the questions?
Glad you liked the "speed"
Glad you liked the "speed" networking session. The questions were thrown together without much thought. So if anyone has any suggestions for questions for "types" of people... thatd be great!
Re: the lightning talks. Totally agree, and thanks for the reminder. I think the timekeeper role should also do what they can to prevent interruptions. IMO- questions after the talk are a good use of time / filler while the next person is setting up for their talk.

+3 or 6minute talk
